If we're posting our line-up predictions/hopes, then I hope it looks like this (in podium order, from left to right):

Night 1: de Blasio, Williamson, Yang, O'Rourke, Harris, Buttigieg, Klobuchar, Gillibrand, Hickenlooper, Bullock
Night 2: Delaney, Inslee, Castro, Warren, Biden, Sanders, Booker, Gabbard, Ryan, Bennet

No one seems to want Warren and Harris on the same stage for some reason

At this point, they should just have an undercard debate. It'll be good for everyone. The undercard candidates get a chance to really draw attention. Meanwhile put Biden, Harris, Warren, Sanders and Pete on the same day, please.

Don't want Harris destroying Biden again, eh?

With a quarter of the viewers?

Kamala's success in attacking Biden ensures it will be open season on him next debate no matter if she ends up there or not. The busing stuff is just the scratch of the surface of his record we haven't even got to the crime bill and Anita Hill. The bankruptcy stuff and Wall St. bailouts are gonna be brought up for sure.

I personally don’t want to see them together until later once we get down to the real contenders.

For something that lasts months.

Side note, but I struggle to see Gravel getting 5 polls with 1% when he's not even included. Surely the DNC could've done something about it? I know he only needs three if he gets the donor threshold, but still.

Anyone else think the debate setup was actually pretty smart? The combination of everyone on stage, no undercard for June and July, followed by culling the field pretty hard so there are only 8 or 9 debating in total in September preserves a sense of fairness while also knocking out the clearly unviable.

IMO who cares if Warren and Harris share the stage. Harris knows she's not going to win the far left vote, they're super high maintenance voters anyway, and won't start a fight on stage. Why bother when stealing votes from the old men is so easy...

Imagine having a third debate haha. How would they even decide which of the joke candidates would qualify, since they're all at 1%? It's funny thinking about that.

This is how they should do random

-  first  randomally divide top 5 candidates (so each debate has at least two candidates from top 5)

- then do same thing for 6-10,11-15,16-20

What I really, really want is to see Bennet and Gillibrand have breakout moments.  I'd love see Bennet attack Biden, and Gillibrand attack Buttigieg.

If, for example, Warren somehow qualifies for the second night of the debate, that might be Sanders vs Warren for the progressive/socialist base.

I think the last debate cycle showed that the single most important thing for a non-Biden candidate is being in the second debate because its shelf life will be longer.

It will be fascinating to watch the lower tier candidates and how hard they fight to make a moment given they are donezo if they don't make the next debate in September. Even someone like Yang might take a verbal swing at someone just because four polls of 2% is going to be really hard for some of these candidates.

Biden, Harris, Sanders, Warren, Buttigieg, O'Rourke, Booker, and Klobuchar seem like locks. Castro just hit 130k and already has one poll of more than 2%, so he's probably in. That's nine.

Beyond that, it will be interesting if anyone else can get there. Yang already has 130k and Tulsi will get there as she's almost at 100k now. I wonder who is more likely or if both can. Entering the qualifying window, Tulsi only got more than 1% once and that was back in April. Yang did it four times previously. In the four polls thus far in the September qualifying round, they each hit 1% in all four.

Gillibrand, Inslee and Williamson are huge dark horses, but at least they all have the initial 65k and Inslee and Williamson both hit it in May. Watch Gillibrand to be super aggressive again or it will be officially over for her. I could see Inslee's super pac going on air to see if they can get him up the polls.

It'd be darkly ironic if they end up doing a climate change debate that Inslee doesn't qualify for.

Since I didn't see anyone post, some rule changes for the second debate.

Quote
As in the first round in Miami, the debate in Detroit will be divided into two nights to accommodate the large field of candidates: the first on July 30, the second on July 31.

Both will air at 8 p.m. EDT and will run two hours. CNN chief political correspondent Dana Bash will join hosts Don Lemon and Jake Tapper as moderators

In the debate in Miami hosted by NBC News and Telemundo, each candidate was given time for a closing statement. But in Detroit, CNN said each of them will be allowed an opening statement as well.

Another big change is that candidates who interrupt "consistently" will be penalized and have time taken away from them, though CNN did not specify how it defines the level of interruption that would trigger the penalty nor much time would be deducted.

In Miami, NBC News moderator Chuck Todd was widely criticized for having the candidates give one-word answers or just raise their hands in response to complex policy issues. CNN announced there will be no such "down-the-line questions."

Here's a rundown of some of the other rules:
•Each candidate gets 60 seconds to answers a moderator's question and 30 seconds for responses or rebuttals if attacked by another candidate.
•Colored lights will be used to show the candidates how much time they have, with yellow indicating 15 seconds, flashing red indicating 5 seconds and solid red meaning their time is up.
• Questions asked by the moderators will appear at the bottom of viewers' screens

Question:

Are seated debates not common in the US ?

I’d like to have a debate where candidates are seated in cozy chairs like we have here in Austria.

Debate podiums are unnecessarily stiff.
