probably clears the way for Sessions to win the nom. As idiotic as AL Republicans are sometimes, I don't think they're idiotic enough to elect the one guy who can't win a general election again, knowing that he is a cartoonishly bad caricature of a Republican.

Not really. Merrill was barely a factor in the race to begin with. Sessions will have a hard time winning the nomination unless he can win back voters angered by his actions as AG.

Curious to see if he outright endorses Tuberville. I noticed he retweeted an AP call of Tuberville advancing to the runoff.

Are Byrne voters more likely to go to Sessions or Tuberville?

Of course, if Trump endorses Tuberville it's moot and Sessions is finished.

Mr. Trump had something to say:

Poor guy... But he should've known better, when he gave in, after Democrats and their "free" press started pushing Russia Hoax. Was he really so naive he didn't understand they were arguing in bad faith? Still, I hope, he'll win!

Map of the Republican primary results:

Looking at that map, it seems that Sessions will at least improve his result in southern Alabama. Also notable how poorly Roy Moore in his former Circuit court district (Etowah county).

Isn't it a trope at this point that he always performs (relatively) poorly there? In that, they know him best so they hate him the most Tongue

He did win that country both in the primary and in the runoff in 2017, both with better results than statewide.

Embarrassing numbers for Sessions. And I suspect he’s going to do even worse than that

Doubtful, I think the God Emperor will go after him and support whoever is the rival in a runoff (which Sessions will most likely get into). I haven't read that recently, but on MSNBC it was said Trump would attack Sessions, as he and his core base fault Sessions for "allowing Mueller to happen". It's kind of amazing how this guy is throwing his own self-respect out the window for a Manhattan real estate conman.

Lol it appears Sessions has finally grown the tiniest of spines, & understandably so: kinda hard to run on who brown-noses Trump the best when he's backing your opponent. Still, Sessions tried for so long, it's almost like he's a simp for Trump. "Pls love me, politics daddy!" Pathetic to have seen a grown-ass man acting like this. So weak.

While neither Sessions nor Tuberville will stand stand strong on important issues like free trade or entitlement reform, Sessions is the more qualified and conservative candidate. Endorsed.

Yeah, Sessions should grow a spine and run as his own man/on his own conservative principles and record rather than campaigning as a Trump lackey. It probably won’t work (I really don’t expect him to win the primary), but he’ll never be able to "out-Trump" Tuberville anyway, and it’s not a strategy that will be perceived as authentic by most voters either.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-claims-jeff-sessions-not-mentally-qualified-be-ag-feud-n1214006

Quote
President Donald Trump on Sunday ramped up his ongoing feud with former Attorney General Jeff Sessions Sunday, claiming Sessions wasn’t "mentally qualified" for the job.

During an interview on "Full Measure with Sharyl Attkisson," Trump called Sessions, who he handpicked for the 2017 appointment, a "disaster" who was never qualified for the role of attorney general.

"He's not mentally qualified to be Attorney General," Trump said. "He was the biggest problem. I mean, look Jeff Sessions put people in place that were a disaster."

Just wow...

I get the feeling Trump would be fine with Doug Jones winning, if Sessions pulls off a miracle and wins the runoff.
