I went to the Vandy-Mizzou game tonight for my first time back in Memorial Gym in 25 months.  It was an ugly game, but a win is a win.  This team hasn't made a lot of waves, but is quietly having Vandy's best season in years.  If we can hold serve down the stretch, an NIT berth (along with our first winning overall record since 2017) could be within reach.  I'm not totally counting out sneaking into the Big Dance, but we need to absolutely catch fire down the stretch (probably need 5 more wins against a tough closing schedule).

USC comes back to defeat Pacific 74-68 and avoids an upset. Seldom-used forward/center Harrison Hornery led the comeback for USC by making 3 pointers and rebounding.

A statistical oddity: Tulane made more three-pointers (12) than two-pointers (Cool in their 80-69 loss to Memphis tonight.  They also had a much higher shooting percentage from three (43% vs 25%).

Uncertainty in the Big East? Georgetown's march to 0-20* continues unabated! Despite controlling most of the first half (of the ugliest basketball game I've seen in some time), once the score hit 49 all, DePaul went on a 26-0 run to send the Hoyas to 0-11.

Georgetown only has two remaining games where is a <10 point underdog: when they host Creighton on Saturday and when they host DePaul for the rematch in two weeks.

*The Xavier game in DC has not been rescheduled yet.

The pick'em is off to a rough start this week, as everyone was 3-4 or worse last night.

In a battle of pollsters, Marist won 83-58 at Monmouth, a pretty big upset in the MAAC.

Who could have predicted that?

On the other side of the ledger, as I'm sure you know, UConn lost for the first time in 170 conference games to Villanova.  They last lost in 2013.

I was ragging on them all day for being last in the Big Ten (conference games) in 3 point shooting, positing that a road loss tonight would put them squarely on the bubble resume-wise. Welp, the next few games should be easy enough to stamp their ticket.

Iowa won 110-87, finishing with 19 three-pointers (10 by Jordan Bohannon) on 34 shots (56%).  Maryland was pretty good from three also -- 14 of 26, also 56%.

Memphis, which finally seems to have gotten its act together, won 69-59 at Houston.  It was the Cougars' first home court loss since 2019 (37 straight wins).  The Tigers, a 10-point underdog, finished the game on a 21-6 run.

No, but I have an attachment to the team.  I have family there and spent a lot of time in the city as a kid, although I haven't been there in probably 30 years.  Went to some of their home football and basketball games back in the 1970s.

Funny story - a couple years ago I was watching one of their home football games on TV, and they went to a crowd shot during a timeout and focused on a couple of my relatives (I didn't know they were at the game).  My wife raced to post about it on Facebook, only to find another relative had already posted a screen capture. Florida State is a basketball football baseball school anyway.

After today's OT loss, Iowa State is projected to finish 6-12 and last place in the Big XII. In the Bracketology Forecast (playing out the rest of the season), this record would still keep them comfortably in the field - one spot above the last four byes (i.e., 9th from the bottom). Would be some wild record-setting.

And to think the bubble feels a bit stronger at this point than it has at perhaps any point in the 68 team era.

Gonzaga is back at #1 in the AP poll following Auburn's loss to Arkansas.  Wyoming jumped into the poll at #22, their first time ranked since a week in 2015; before that, they hadn't been ranked since the 1987-88 season.
