I'd be interested in hosting a pick'em for the second straight year, assuming someone is willing to keep score and we can attract a couple of players.

I'd be looking at a few rules changes from last year, such as instead of the week starting on Monday, it would start on Wednesday, and there would likely be a maximum of thirty games picked during the non-conference season (while not including non-conference tournaments such as the Maui Invitational), and forty-five during the conference season.

I'll keep score again if we can get enough players to make it worthwhile.  Not starting before Wednesday is a good change.  I'd stick with a weekly max of 30 (or even 25) games through the whole season, though; 45 is a lot to ask of people.

AP preseason first-team All-Americans:

Collin Gillespie, Villanova
Johnny Juzang, UCLA
Trayce Jackson-Davis, Indiana
Drew Timme, Gonzaga
Kofi Cockburn, Illinois

In other news, I watched a good chunk of Memphis's exhibition vs. Lemoyne-Owen on ESPN+.  To the extent you can tell anything from an exhibition against an overmatched D-II team, they do look scary: big, fast, disciplined, and with a couple of terrific shooters.  They won 105-57, with much-heralded freshman Emoni Bates and a few other players sitting out.

(But they still don't shoot free throws worth a damn.)

I think we need at least five players to make a pick'em worthwhile.  I'm willing to be one of them, so if two more post picks by Tuesday then I'll add mine and start recording the picks.

OK, since we've got enough players it's on.  Here are my picks:

Kansas @ Michigan State (Madison Square Garden) ESPN
Kentucky @ Duke (Madison Square Garden) ESPN

Buffalo @ Michigan 6:30 PM Big Ten Network

Vermont @ Northern Iowa

Army @ Duke 7:00 PM ACC Network
Oregon State @ Iowa State 8:00 PM ESPN+
Virginia Tech @ Navy 8:30 PM
Pittsburgh @ West Virginia 8:30 PM ESPNU
San Diego State @ BYU 9:00 PM
SMU @ Oregon 11:00 PM PAC12 Network
Villanova @ UCLA 11:30 PM ESPN2

USC @ Temple ESPN+
California @ UNLV
Georgia @ Cincinnati  Interesting matchup but I have little faith in Georgia basketball.
UCF @ Miami (FL) 2:00 PM ACC Network
Texas @ Gonzaga 10:30 PM ESPN2

Florida State @ Florida 1:00 PM ESPN

NYE & Illiniwek: you're both missing a pick (not the same one).

Nearly a top 20 upset on opening day as Ohio State escapes Akron 67-66 on a basket with 1 second left.

Adding the pick of BYU over San Diego State, since I'm pretty sure that's the one I'm missing.

It was.

Navy leads against #25 Virginia 61-55 with less than two minutes to go.

Navy won 66-58, and that was the only Top 25 upset last night.  In addition to Ohio State, Houston also had a narrow escape; they needed OT to beat Hofstra after trailing by double digits in the second half.

UC Riverside might be pretty good this season.  After a narrow opening loss at San Diego State, they won at Arizona State last night on a 70-foot shot at the buzzer.

For a possible upset tonight, keep an eye on Rice @ #15 Houston.  Rice clobbered Pepperdine (a usually decent WCC team) in their opener, while Houston struggled to beat Hofstra in OT.

Ohio State, which was lucky to beat Akron in its opener, leads Niagara (#233 at Kenpom.com) by only one point at halftime.

Or maybe not.  Houston leads 42-15 at the half. Tongue

The ACC's rocky opening week continues as Louisville lost at home to Furman in OT.

In another (non-ACC) upset, Oklahoma State lost at home to Oakland.

Loyola-Chicago is leaving the Missouri Valley Conference for the Atlantic 10.  The MVC is reportedly pursuing Murray State, UT Arlington, and Kansas City (formerly UMKC).

The Big 10's rough week continues as Maryland loses at home to George Mason, 71-66.  (However, Michigan State is up big against Butler.)

Another early non-conference loss for the Big 10, this time by Ohio State, although on the road at Xavier is not a terrible one.
