1. As anyone can now tell you George Bush, circa 1991, was not a healthy man. The President was beginning to suffer the earliest symptoms of Parkinson's, a secret that was hidden similar to FDR's polio as talks with the dissolving USSR were underway. Unfortunately, the burden of seeing a new global order into fruition, combined with age and ailing health, led to the shocking discovery of President Bush dead from a stroke at the Resolute Desk, right as General Colin Powell entered the room to inform the president of the coup.

2. President Quayle was sworn in hours later, much to the dismay of some of Bush's advisers. In a near-inverse of the Cuban Missile Crisis, President Quayle used his first moments of power to hastily deploy troops to the Polish and Romanian border and to inform nearby bases to prepare to deploy fighters at a moment's notice. The Soviet hardliners cited this display of American aggression as the perfect reason to restore power to the Soviet Union and legitimize their government. The nerve-wracking, almost-nuclear standoff lasted a week, until Colin Powell, JCS Chairman, went behind the President's back and ordered the American troops to return to their bases, whilst imploring other world leaders to threaten sanctions on the floundering Soviet economy. Fortunately, Mikhail Gorbachev returned to power, and democratic elections went underway as the USSR formally dissolved later that year.

3. As the 1992 Election season drew near, the question on the public's mind was whether or not the inexperienced President Quayle could handle the global geopolitical shifts created by the Soviet power vacuum. To quell fears (and primary threats) from within his own party, Quayle chose Rep. Newt Gingrich to be his Vice President. In response to the young, reckless Republican, the Democratic party nominated veteran statesman Senator Lloyd Bentsen of Texas, who chose Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton as his running mate. Perhaps the most memorable moment of the '92 election season was during a presidential debate, where, in response to a question on whether or not he could handle further crises, President Quayle responded " I have had as much experience in the Congress as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency, and like President Kennedy, I successfully handled a crisis of Soviet aggression." Senator Bentsen's response was the now-legendary "Mr. President, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Mr. President, you're no Jack Kennedy."

4. The first term of President Bentsen went swimmingly as he governed from the center, with such achievements as welfare reform, an expansion of the EITC, the ratification of NAFTA, and the passage of a balanced budget. President Bentsen had cultivated a wise, humble, grandfatherly image akin to President Reagan the decade before. Also notable of the Bentsen Administration was the closeness between the President and the VP; Clinton occasionally referred to Bentsen as "the father he never had". As the President geared up for the 1996 election, he planned to campaign on preserving the new, peaceful global order, (modest) healthcare reform, and infrastructure investment of both the physical and electronic variety. The Republicans, after a failed attempt to shut down the government, knew that they stood little chance of winning in 1996. However, Quayle's former Chief of Staff, Pat Buchanan, had plowed through the primary field of sacrificial lambs-to-be. His fiery paleoconservative rhetoric energized his base, but it had little appeal amongst traditional and moderate Republicans, who only supported him out of partisanship. The election was a landslide for President Bentsen, with the Democratic ticket flipping Virginia, Colorado, and Texas into their column, ending in a 432-106 EV victory.

5. Bentsen's presidency had seen eight years of a prosperous homeland and a more interconnected world, thanks to the refinement of the internet and the success of NAFTA. Clinton campaigned on this legacy, and promised to preserve and further these achievements. Clinton selected Senator Feinstein of California, who became the first woman to ever be on a winning presidential ticket. However, the peace of this new era would not last. In August of 2002, an Iraqi military convoy kidnapped seven members of a UN humanitarian aid mission, as well as reporter Matt Lauer and his camera crew. Using Lauer's equipment, the Iraqi government broadcast the murder of the UN group, Lauer, and his crew, condemning them as supporters of the Kurds against Saddam Hussein. The Republican congress, already anticipating gains in the midterms after ten years of Democratic rule, bashed Clinton and Bentsen for failing to deal with the oppressive Hussein regime. Clinton was then forced into sending troops to depose Hussein, which, by all accounts, should have been a quick event. However, it was drawn into the 2004 election season, which, coupled with Democrat fatigue and revelations of an affair between himself and an aide, led to his defeat at the hands of Senator Romney of Michigan. Clinton's legacy was tarnished, as he now has the reputation of being an interventionist bumpkin.

6. The Romney presidency was doomed to fail. His efforts to remove troops from Iraq failed as guerilla warfare being raged in the streets of Baghdad proved that the U.S.'s plan to establish a functioning democracy would take more intervention than anybody wanted. Furthermore, the prosperity of the Bentsen days petered out in 2007 as the "Great Recession" set in. Romney tried his hardest to stem the recession, but Republicans were unhappy with his "liberal" propositions to solve the problem, and thus, nothing of substance was passed. In hindsight, however, President Romney is now seen a respected, tragic figure along the lines of President Carter, who tried to do what he could to solve the problem, but came up short.

7. Promising hope and change to Americans afflicted by the recession was Senator Edwards of North Carolina, whose financial regulations, among other things, ended up stemming the hemorrhage of money and jobs. The Edwards Administration pushed for universal healthcare, which ended up being labelled as "JohnnyCare", a system that established a public health insurance option for those who could not afford or access private healthcare. This reform went through the largely Democratic congress without much of a hitch. Edwards fashioned himself in the mold of FDR, promising job retraining, if not new jobs altogether, to many of the people affected by the downturn. His "American Restoration Corps" plan was ambitious: the establishment of thousands (if not millions) of public sector jobs in areas such as alternative energy and civil engineering for those who'd recently lost their jobs in similar areas. The plan was also intended to have positions open to college students, who would take lesser wages to help pay off tuition and student loans, however, this section was disliked by both progressives and conservatives, and ultimately, the ARC was somewhat neutered, with only a third of the jobs promised actually being created.

8. To many, Vice President Sibelius's defeat came as a total shock. However, those many were often Beltway insiders and pundits who saw the economic rebound under Edwards's presidency, the success of JohnnyCare in 2011, and the first signs of a stable Middle East as reasons for the average American to vote for Sibelius. To the "average American", Edwards's two terms came up short for them. The ARC hadn't delivered on the scale it was supposed to, and many were still unemployed or underemployed as jobs continued to be shipped overseas. The debt ballooned as a result of the many reforms, which some believed they never saw the benefits of. Troops were still in Iraq ensuring stability, but to the mother of a soldier, fending off guerrilla terrorist cells is no different and no less nerve-wracking than battling the Iraqi army. Enter Senator David McKinley of West Virginia, whose trade populism, near-isolationism, and budgetary discipline appealed to these masses. To many older white Americans, McKinley was one of their own, a man from the poorest state of the union who created his own engineering firm before being elected to the house and, in 2014, the Senate. McKinley selected the young, hispanic "reform conservative" Marco Rubio of Florida as his running mate, and the Republican ticket defeated Sibelius in the general election.

It has been studied by numerous people over the years and it's pretty much agreed, if Perot didn't run, Bush Sr. would've lost by even MORE than OTL. Perot softened the blow.

1. King George I / George Washington (1789-1799)

2. King George II / George Washington Parke Custis (1799-1857) (disputed 1799-1809)

2. King George II / George Steptoe Washington (1800-1809) (coronated following the succession crisis over whether Custis could legitimately take the throne as an adopted child, led rebel forces until his death in 1809, when the American Civil War subsequently ended)

3. Queen Mary I / Mary Anna Custis Lee (1857-1870) (under the threat of Northern secession and a 2nd Civil War, she signed the abolition of slavery in 1870 and then abdicated under severe pressure from angered Southerners)

4. King George III / George Washington Custis Lee (1870-1913)

5. King Robert I / Robert E. Lee III (1913-1922)

6. King George IV / Dr. George Bolling Lee (1922-1934) (assasinated in a fascist coup attempt in 1934)

7. Queen Helen I / Helen Keeney Lee (1934-1968) (executed many fascist sympathisers in government after her coronation)

In the political turmoil of Vietnam, Queen Helen's death, and the DNC riots, etc. a constitutional convention was called. The monarchy was abolished, and the lack of a clear heir aided in the push for this move. The nation was already a constitutional monarchy, now the President would be elected on a national popular vote and would be a figurehead, and the defacto diplomat for the nation, taking up the duties of the monarch. The Prime Minister would continue their duties as usual.

Mary married matrilineally. Legal names are of OTL, I would think Washington would be tacked onto all of them if this TL was a reality.

Dynasty Washington (1789-1968)

By the 2040's, the Federalist Party has become a center to center-right (by today's standard's) party that supports, above all, the lowering of barriers for all Americans to be successful in a meritocratic free market and anti-crony capitalism, whereas the Democratic Party advocate a pro-central planning and state capitalist agenda on the basis of social justice

The Presidential elections generally have much lower turnout than Parliamentary elections and are better able to reflect the public feeling due to elections occurring often. The President is somewhat based of the German President. The position has little real power and the figurehead works with the Minister of State as the top Representative/Diplomat of the nation abroad. As a result, the President spends much of their tenure abroad. They also perform ceremonial duties like opening and closing Parliament (officially but not really), in place of a Governor General or monarch in that regard.

Kind of the same way/time as West Virginia and Kentucky IRL. Don't think too hard about it though, I pretty much made it while I was bored in the middle of the day.

Similar concept to the one I did for Spain, but for the EU. Copy-pasting the US political system into the EU.

President of the European Union

1979:French Pres. Valery Giscard D'Estaing (FR)/ PM. Giulio Andreotti (IT)
1984: Pres. Valery Giscard D'Estaing (FR)/ VP Giulio Andreotti (IT)
1989: PM. Felipe González (ES)/ Sen. Jacques Delors (FR)
1994: Pres. Felipe González (ES) / VP Jacques Delors (FR)
1999: Fmr. PM Silvio Berlusconi (IT) / PM Jose María Aznar (ES)
2004: Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (DE) / Fmr. PM Paavo Lipponen (FI)
2009: PM Jean Claude Juncker (LX) / Fmr. PM Guy Verhofstadt (BE)
2014: PM Robert Fico (SK) / Sen. Martin Schulz (DE)

Defeated

1979: Fmr. PM Willy Brandt (WG) / Fmr. PM Harold Wilson (UK)
1984: Sen. Roy Jenkins (UK) / PM. Andreas Papandreou (GR)
1989: VP Giulio Andreotti (IT) / PM. Jacques Santer (LX)
1994: Fmr. PM Margaret Thatcher (UK) / Fmr. PM Wilfried Martens (BE)
1999: PM. Wim Kok (NL) / Sen Klaus Hänsch (DE)
2004: Pres. Silvio Berlusconi (IT) / VP Jose María Aznar (ES)
2009: Pres. Gerhard Schröder (DE) / VP Paavo Lipponen (FI)
2014: Pres. Jean Claude Juncker (LX) / VP Guy Verhofstadt (BE) // Rep. Nigel Farage (UK) / Rep Geert Wilders (NL)

Results

People's Party
Socialist party

1979: People's Party large victory (by 9)
1984: People's Party close victory (by 2)
1989: Socialist landslide (by 12)
1994: Socialist nailbiter (by 0.5)
1999: Close People's Party victory (by 2)
2004: Socialist close victory (by 3) *
2009: People's Party landslide (by 16)
2014: Socialist landslide (by 10)

*: In reality, conservative parties actaully went up in 2004 even after you adjust for the enlargement, but the Iraq war causes a backlash against the very pro-Iraq Berlusconi government. Plus, they handle the Madrid attacks just as bad as Aznar did in OTL.
