Republic of California
*Hoover and Reagan never reside in California ITTL.
Presidente de Alte California
1. José Castro - Independent (1836)
2. Juan Bautista Alvarado - Independent (1836-1842)
Mexican Governor (Statehood)
Manuel Micheltorena - Independent (1842-1845)
Presidente de Alte California
3. Pío Pico - Independent (1845-1846)
President of California
4. John Drake Sloat - Independent (1846-1847)
5. Robert F. Stockton - (U.S.) Democratic (1847)
President of California/Presidente de California
6. John McDougall - Democratic (1847-1855)
7. J. Neely Johnson - Californian (1855-1860)
8. Leland Stanford - Populist (1860-1865)
9. Frederick Ferdinand Low - Populist (1865-1870)

10. Henry Huntly Haight - Conservative (1870-1878)
11. James Thompson Farley - Conservative (1878-1880)
12. Denis Kearney - Workingmen (1880-1890)
13. James Budd - Conservative (1890-1900)
14. George Cooper Pardee - Populist (1900-1901)
15. Thomas R. Bard - Populist (1901-1905)
(will be finished later)

Notes: Castro is the Acting President of California (leader of the rebellion) follow its rebellion from Mexico. Alvarado is democratically elected and Castro is pressured to resign and allow Alvarado to take office. Alvarado is deposed by Mexican forces and replaced by Governor Micheltorena. Acting President Pico emerges and forms the nation again. Pico decides to seek US assistance to secure its sovereignty. He resigns in favor of a US-chosen "President" Sloat. Sloat is removed by Washington and replaced with Stockton. The office of President of California begins to look more like a state governorship. Californians depose Stockton in the chaos of the Mexican-American war, favoring nationhood, not statehood. Elections in California for President were held in 1836 and were not held again until 1850. From 1850 onwards five-year terms were permitted were no term limits. In 1878, President Haight died and was replaced by Vice President Farley. California existed under threat of US invasion from the 1840s to 1860. When California came to the United State's aid in the American Civil War, the US decided to recognize its nationhood. President Pardee was assassinated in 1901 and replaced with Vice President Bard.

Republic of California
President of California/Presidente de California
16. James Gillett - Populist (1905-1910)
17. Jackson Stitt Wilson - Socialist (1910-1925)
18. Friend Richardson - Populist (1925-1930)
19. Culbert Olson - Conservative (1930-1942)
20. Sheridan Downey - Conservative (1942-1945)
21. Pat Brown - Liberal (1945-1955)
22. Richard Nixon - Californian (1955-1960)
23. Richard P. Graves - Liberal (1960-1965)
24. Jesse M. Unruh - Liberal (1965-1970)
25. Richard Nixon - Conservative (1970-1974)
26. Houston I. Flournoy - Conservative (1974-1975)
Acting: Leo T. McCarthy - Liberal (1975)
27. Jerry Brown - Liberal (1975-1985)
28. Dianne Feinstein - Liberal (1985-1990)
29. Pete Wilson - Conservative (1990-2000)
30. Gray Davis - Liberal (2000-2005)
31. Peter Camejo - Green (2005-2010)
32. Arnold Schwarzenegger - Independent (2010-2020)
33. Maxine Waters - Liberal (2020-2025)
34. Kevin de León - Liberal (2025-Incumbent)

*The Republic of California has no requirement for the President to be Californian-born ITTL.

President Richardson loses in a historic landslide in 1930 following the global depression started in the United States. Culbert Olson declares war on the Empire of Japan and the German Third Reich after the attack on the American port of Pearl Harbor, citing the "unwarranted aggression of a major threat to world peace [referring to the Empire of Japan]." President Olson is assassinated in 1942 by fascist sympathizers. President Nixon has to resign under the threat of impeachment due to a Watergate-like scandal. Former Vice President, now President Flournoy gives a full pardon to Former President Nixon. President Flournoy is impeached for pardoning Nixon and for collusion with Nixon but the California Senate falls five votes short of a conviction. Impeachment is tried again and the Senate results in a tie. Vice President Evelle J. Younger is expected to break the tie in the President's favor but he votes for conviction. President Flournoy is removed from office and the Supreme Court of California overturns his pardon of Nixon. Vice President Younger calls for elections to be held earlier than scheduled and resigns the Office of Vice President before being sworn in as President of the Republic of California. Speaker of the California House of Representatives, Leo McCarthy, is Acting President of California until an election is held. In the 2000s, President Davis supports the Iraq War. When the Liberals renominate Davis in 2005, liberals and progressives flee to Camejo's camp, eventually electing him that year. Camejo's popularity plummets following the Great Recession and he does not pursue re-election in 2010.

*Walter Judd is Vice President under Eisenhower. Cecil H. Underwood is the Republican nominee in 1960, he loses to JFK by a larger margin than Nixon. In 1968, Rockefeller/Reagan wins by a larger margin than Nixon '68. Rockefeller defeats McGovern in 1972. In 1975, Rockefeller steps down to prevent a Democratic flip of the governorship in his home state of New York (runs for the office in 1974). President Reagan takes office a day after the two year mark of Rockefeller's second term allowing Reagan a total of nearly ten years in office when he serves as President from 1975-1977 and 1981-1989. Reagan, smelling a Republican loss in 1976 decides not to run. Ford wins the nomination and narrowly loses to Carter. Reagan becomes an activist for conservative causes, building a sturdy base for even larger 1980 and 1984 landslides than in OTL.

1. King George I / George Washington (1789-1799)

2. King George II / George Washington Parke Custis (1799-1857) (disputed 1799-1809)

2. King George II / George Steptoe Washington (1800-1809) (coronated following the succession crisis over whether Custis could legitimately take the throne as an adopted child, led rebel forces until his death in 1809, when the American Civil War subsequently ended)

3. Queen Mary I / Mary Anna Custis Lee (1857-1870) (under the threat of Northern secession and a 2nd Civil War, she signed the abolition of slavery in 1870 and then abdicated under severe pressure from angered Southerners)

4. King George III / George Washington Custis Lee (1870-1913)

5. King Robert I / Robert E. Lee III (1913-1922)

6. King George IV / Dr. George Bolling Lee (1922-1934) (assasinated in a fascist coup attempt in 1934)

7. Queen Helen I / Helen Keeney Lee (1934-1968) (executed many fascist sympathisers in government after her coronation)

In the political turmoil of Vietnam, Queen Helen's death, and the DNC riots, etc. a constitutional convention was called. The monarchy was abolished, and the lack of a clear heir aided in the push for this move. The nation was already a constitutional monarchy, now the President would be elected on a national popular vote and would be a figurehead, and the defacto diplomat for the nation, taking up the duties of the monarch. The Prime Minister would continue their duties as usual.

Mary married matrilineally. Legal names are of OTL, I would think Washington would be tacked onto all of them if this TL was a reality.

Dynasty Washington (1789-1968)

The Presidential elections generally have much lower turnout than Parliamentary elections and are better able to reflect the public feeling due to elections occurring often. The President is somewhat based of the German President. The position has little real power and the figurehead works with the Minister of State as the top Representative/Diplomat of the nation abroad. As a result, the President spends much of their tenure abroad. They also perform ceremonial duties like opening and closing Parliament (officially but not really), in place of a Governor General or monarch in that regard.

Presidents of the Socialist Republic of America:

1. Huberty Humphrey (Socialist Party) 1968-81
2. Ted Kennedy (Socialist Party) 1981-85
3. George McGovern (Peace Socialist) 1985-93
4. Douglas Wilder (African American Socialist) 1993-2005
5. Howard Dean (Progressive Socialist) 2005-13
6. Mike Gravel (Western Socialist Party) 2013-21
7. Kamala Harris (Black Socialist Party) 2021-present

Alternate timeline where the U.S. is a "one-party state" run by the Socialist Party and her sister parties. Traditionally, the governing President filled the gap of the establishment Socialist Party, winning states like IL, NJ, CT, routinely. The South is more black than OTL since Democratic whites in the region were disenfranchised for 25 years (so birthrates fell a lot and some fled) after the Socialist takeover and now the region is conservative outside of black-majority states like SC, GA, MS, MD.

Contests are relatively free for Socialist Party candidates but to date non-Socialist campaigns are suppressed as much as possible, especially in the West.

The West is Socialist and populist, by and large, like Fremont in Atlasia.

FTR, the "Socialists" were never really socialists and were just left-wing Democrats in general though some hard-left candidates ran and won some states like Jill Stein, Cynthia McKinney, Lenora Fulani, etc.

EDIT: I just saw Oldiesfreak1854's post a few posts up. This post was inspired by the idea of what if anti-war sentiment led "Socialist" revolutionaries to sweep the country in '68 forcing LBJ out in what was basically a coup. Humphrey endorses the coup and becomes President and the U.S. immediately withdraws from Vietnam.

2024 candidate field (as a bonus):

Running:

Barack Obama (Socialist Party)

Marianne Williamson (Peace Socialist)

Kamala Harris (Black Socialist Party)
Cori Bush (Black Socialist Party)

Joe Manchin (Appalachian Socialist)

Alternate electoral system where winners needs 70% of electoral votes to win outright and the House was consistently gerrymandered against the Democratic Republicans --> Democrats, i.e., the founders are much more conservative ITTL and/or Democratic-Republicans are much weaker than Federalists --> Whigs --> Republicans

11. Frelinghuysen, 1852-53
12. Pierce, 1853-57
13. Frémont, 1857-65

34. Strom Thurmond (Dixiecrat) 1949-57 term-limited
35. John Sparkman (Democratic) 1957-65 term-limited
36. Barry Goldwater (Republican) 1965-69 lost re-election
37. George Wallace (American Independent) 1969-77 term-limited
38. Cornelia Wallace (American National) 1977-81 retired
39. Lisa Taylor Wallace (American National) 1981-89 impeached; term-limited
40. David Duke (White Unity) 1989-97 term-limited
41. Carolyn Bryant Donham (American National) 1997-2005 term-limited
42. Roy Moore (American National) 2005-13 term-limited
43. Todd Akin (American National) 2013-17 lost re-election
44. Ron Dellums (Restore America) 2017-18 died in office
45. Gretchen Whitmer (Restore America) 2018-19 impeached and removed
46. Marjorie Taylor Greene (American National) 2019-present succeeded to the Presidency and won re-election in 2020

Segregation ends in 2006 ITTL. Wallace used his influence to force his second wife out once their marriage ended and he urged the House to impeach his third wife after the same but could not get a conviction. Dellums won in a huge upset but the dream of America on the road to recovery fell apart as Gretchen Whitmer was quickly impeached and removed from office after the midterms when the Republicans regained a Senate supermajority. U.S. elections are also far from free and fair. House Speaker MTG succeeded to the presidency after the PPT refused to serve and since Whitmer was unable to confirm a VP.
