Enemy at the Gates.

No more love triangles in WWII movies. Ever. Great movie otherwise.

Agreed.  Though even grimy, Rachel Weisz does it for me.

(It really does grate on me how many WW 2 movies have romantic subplots.  For all it's flaws, Gettysburg avoided that mistake, at least.)

Two Towers Extended.

Ive got some new blurays (Hangover, Inglourious Basterds [sic], Angels & Demons, Public Enemies) to watch, but TNT put the regular trilogy on earlier this week and I'm in an LOTR mood.

World's Greatest Dad = World's Worst Movie

It was in such bad taste that I found it difficult to make it all the way through.

Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Although Downey Jr was amusing, as I expected, the film, overall it was alright.  Perhaps if I'd read the works of Conan Doyle previously I would have enjoyed it more, but his prose seems too dry my liking, yet much more inviting than Wilde.

The Hangover (2009)

2009 really must have been a bad year for comedy because I thought it was incredibly overrated. Sure there were some funny moments, for instance Mike Tyson singing In the Air Tonight but to me, the humour was inconsistent and the cast who were providing it didn't seem to gel.

The Evil Dead.

Wow, that was some great acting. I'm glad I saw in a theater at least, it would've been just stupid without the crowd reactions.

Daybreakers.

Such a sweet movie. It's like vampires + sci-fi + zombies with a healthy dose of Sam Niel and Willem Dafoe. Admittedly, the backstory and the world they created is probably more interesting than the film itself, but it reminded me a lot of an old sci-fi B Movie, that, at face value is just entertaining pulp, but at the same raises some interesting questions and social commentary as well.

It's Complicated.

Mother wanted someone to go see it with on her birthday. I obliged. It wasn't horrible.

A Serious Man.

I was a little disappointed that it focused more on Judaism in-jokes than Minnesota ones that I obviously wouldn't get as much. Still quite amusing.

My Sister's Keeper, with Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin. It was melodramatic and lacked any real character depth. Alec Baldwin was good, but he always is. I wouldn't recommend it.

As for It's Complicated, I saw it on New Years Eve, and I thought that, although it started slow and the ending wasn't great, about 1/3 of it was absolutely hilarious. I would recommend it.

Avatar in IMAX 3-D...while the script/plot lacked substance, it was visually the best movie

Fantastic Mr. Fox

I was beaming for the first thirty minutes or so as I soaked in all the hilarious little touches and the adorable animation and the referring to everything in human and fox years. I don't think I've ever enjoyed watching a film as much.

The Book of Eli

I quite like it.  The film's palette of browns and grays helps to reinforce the backstory, and I like the balanced view that it gives religion - how it can be both a source of knowledge and a channel by which to manipulate others.

There's more that I want to say about Eli, but I'll wait until others see it; I think you'll like the film more if this is all you read. Smiley

I'm seeing that tomorrow. I'm kind of surprised the arthouse theater is showing it. They don't really have much else to show now and have to resort to something mainstream, but that's an odd choice over Youth in Revolt and The Lovely Bones. Then again they also showed The Hangover.

District 9. I didn't like the beginning or the end, but it was good in between.

District 9. I didn't like the beginning or the end, but it was good in between.

That actually sums up my biggest issue with it, it couldn't decide if it wanted to be a darkly comic mockumentary, "cerebral" sci-fi movie like Blade Runner, or straight up action movie. So it was basically all three of those in order with the bits you refer to with elements of all three sprinkled throughout. I found the overall result a bit of a mess. It's also one of the worst movies for Fridge Logic (thanks TV Tropes!), I realized close to a dozen plot holes in the next 2-3 hours after seeing it.

The Crow

It's a real shame about Brandon Lee, he did a great job with a character that was basically a heroic version of Heath Ledger's Joker. The movie was a good way to see a style that has since been done to death when it was still fresh. Impressive for a relatively low budget film.

Youth In Revolt. A good movie to watch when you're drunk or in a really giddy mood and just about will laugh at anything. Otherwise file it under "another outlandish teenage sexual coming of age tale".

Amadeus (Director's Cut)
Wonderfully engaging. Both leads were particularly good.
Maybe just a few too many notes...

The Road
Good effort at adapting the book - but I don't think it brings across the same emotional resonance. (Too much narration at the start as well, IMO.) Mortensen was very good though.
