As if things couldn't be messier for the House GOP.

I think it's become evident that McCarthy was protecting Santos all this time.

Now, without a Speaker, f*** it!

I wonder if theres enough GOPers who would vote for it to get 2/3. You already have 6 of the NY Reps doing it. I don't have faith in the GOP to do the right thing, but I wonder how many they could actually get. None of them owe Santos anything, so why keep him?

We'll find out if this happens. He's not exactly on friendly terms with his supposed allies, and there will be 212 locked in Dem votes in favor of a special election flip. So you would need about a third of Republicans to vote yes. Of course if there are the votes to kick out the trash, then there will be a lot more votes to do so, cause nobody wants to be stuck holding the short end of the stick.

Supposedly getting a vote next week.  If the GOP whips, then there's no way this hits 2/3, if they don't it absolutely will.

Is he gone or will the rest of GOP stoop so low as to keep this con man?

Depends on leadership. If they protect him, Santos is probably safe. If they tell members to "vote their conscience" Santos is gone. He has no friends or allies. He is considered a joke and a fruad to everyone. The only reason he was tolerated was because of the 4 seat majority

His expulsion would lead to a special election the Democrats would be pretty heavily favored to win. Now if they had a larger majority in the house, I could easily see them throwing him under the bus, but since they only hold the chamber by 4 seats, I think a lot of his colleagues are going to support him solely for the purpose of safeguarding the GOP's control.

Looks like Johnson will allow a vote to be held but won't support expulsion because "Santos hasn't been given due process yet" (code for "we don't need another GOP vacancy rn"), don't know yet what that means for the prospects of leadership whipping or not:

I would be fine with "muh due process" if that was actually their position, but we know if Joe blow was accused of something like this, these same people would not hesitate to assume they were guilty. I'm so tired of the double standard that a politician is given more benefit of the doubt than the average person

Does Matt Johnson know that Santos is gay? He seems to have very strong opinions about gay people.

Getting 290 members of this House to vote for expulsion for this particular individual surprisingly doesn't feel like it will be as tough as it probably should be. There are still a large number of powerful institutional players (both elected and unelected) who want him gone - this vote could be very interesting.

290 are needed to expel a member.

I suspect 212 Democrats vote to expel. You need 78 Republicans, about 35% of the caucus. You have 6 NY Republicans. Than another 12 republicans in Biden districts that will probably vote to expel.

I wonder how many Republicans will vote him out because they don't want a gay man in the caucus. I don't think most care, but I could see that creepy old guy who came out against Emmer because of the RFMA doing so.

Debate also just concluded on the resolution in preparation for the vote this evening.  It was just the main NY Reps pushing this, Goldman for the Dems, and Santos with nobody else on his behalf.

I’m not a fan of setting the precedent of expelling someone not yet convicted. No matter how much we all know he’s guilty.

From a political standpoint, you'd think Republican's would rather risk a low turnout special and potentially get a half decent incumbent as opposed to a high turnout presidential year where democrats have a good chance of taking the seat back against a no name. Unless they think it's a one term rental and would rather maximize what little time they have left here.

Also bear in mind that for specials in NY, nominees are chosen by the local parties so this time, the Nassau GOP can properly vet their candidate.
