this isn't a clown car at this point, it's the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus Train Wreck of 1918

can someone explain what this is / how this is good for Whitmer?

As far as I can tell: Brandenburg, a businesswoman, was one of the also-rans who got disqualified from the R primary ballot along with James Craig. She has decided to seek the nomination of the U.S. Taxpayers' Party of Michigan, which unlike most other state affiliates of the Constitution Party did not change its name due to some weird aspect of Michigan law.

Is this really the hill they want to die on? Supporting restrictions that are only popular with 13% of the American public?

Didn't all the reasonably sane Republicans get kicked off the ballot?

Democrats need to keep setting traps for Republicans to talk about rape. I know it isn't 2012 anymore, and such gaffes related to it may not lead to Akins or Mourdocks being upset anymore, but in a state like Michigan it can probably still doom a candidate. Just look at the state legislature special election upset that happened in Kent County a few months ago.

Didn't all the reasonably sane Republicans get kicked off the ballot?

I don't know if they were all that reasonable or sane if they had to resort to fraud to get the signatures they needed.

Any recommendations for a Democrat voting in this Republican primary? Each option seems worse than the next. Dixon seems destined to win, so maybe voting against her is best. But is there any non-repulsive alternative to her?

Does Kevin Rinke have a chance at winning the primary?

Chance? Sure. Likely? I highly doubt it. As soon as Dixon gets the trump endorsement its over.

BUT this is a good suggestion. I am going to be voting for Rinke in the primary. He's certainly a mixed bag in my eye but he is by far the most palatable.

Cook Political Reports now rates the Governor's race as Lean Democrat.

The nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report moved the Michigan governor’s race from “toss-up” to “lean Democrat” almost a week before the GOP chooses its nominee to take on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

That’s being a bit generous to the Republicans. Most of them were frauds and one is on his way to jail. Whitmer has this thing locked down, Likely Democrat.

Made me curious about the origin of Whitmer's nickname.  I was able to trace it back to March 17, 2020, Twitter user @beingbrandim in Detroit.  Probably used earlier but I'm not finding online.

It seems to be used both negatively (by detractors) and positively (by supporters).

Also is it just me or does Dixon's whole personality often come across as very artificial?

I was watching her on FOX News and she seems to answer all the questions word for word with some sort of default script inside her head with a monotone voice.

Here's an example

It does feel robotic, but I wonder how much that actually matters. Repeating the same talking points over and over is a common thing in politics.
Gretchen Whitmer, of course, is using the "attack your opponent on your biggest weakness" approach, which makes its own sense.
I will assume police funding will not have any real importance until proven otherwise.

The Classic and Deluxe models on 538 now rate MI-Gov as "Solid D" with the Classic giving Whitmer a 99% of winning re-election.

Imo, Solid D is overconfident given MI is a polarized swing state, but the GOP is really screwing up what should've been a very realistic pickup opportunity.

A couple of names from Tudor Dixon's shortlist for her running mate have leaked.

Those names are:

Former Representative Mike Bishop and Former State Representative Jase Bolger.

Hard to see Dixon winning unless it's a total, unequivocal wipeout, but I won't be surprised if it's uncomfortably close for Democrats (Whitmer+4 or something).
