I presume he's only doing this because he knows it has Republican votes, so he'll use this vote to maintain his "record" of "independence" from (& "fiscal restraint" compared to) the Democrats. Like I've previously pointed out, though, the man has never cast a deciding vote against the Democratic Party line over the course of his nearly 10 years in the Senate. That's just not changing now.

Won't the $2k be part of a larger Democratic stimulus bill though?

Theres a clean house bill that's just for $1400. I assume Schumer will take that up.

He's falling into the same trap as Pryor - thinking that going conservative on economic issues will help him keep crossover Republican voters in a deep red state rather than realizing those voters only crossed over because they want less conservative economic policy.

Good point, Manchin will almost certainly vote for that.  And I maintain he'll end up allowing elimination of the filibuster for the creation of new states and won't block creating Douglas Commonwealth.

If Manchin won't even support a $2k stimulus, there's zero chance DC statehood is happening.

this presumes every Republican would vote no.  I am not sure that's the case.

No GOPer will support DC statehood. I am 100% sure of that.

Murkowski already basically does, comparing it to Alaska's push for statehood.

I also take issue with the idea that Manchin will oppose DC Statehood. This is a totally separate issue on a multi-dimensional political spectrum.

We can't waste a reconciliation bill on just the checks. We need the checks, money for states, boosted unemployment insurance, and a lot of more urgent financial relief to avoid a recession.

If Manchin’s gonna stand by this we ought to offer Murkowski the chairmanship of the Energy committee and get her to caucus with us.

I doubt she will, but it's worth it to put out some feelers and see what it would take.

I hope he switches parties at this point. I'm fed up with him. He is better than the alternatives in WV, but that makes our work in 2022 to get actual Democrats elected to rebuild the Senate majority even more important. We should consider him a no on just about every crucial piece of legislation for the next 2 years and work to bring Romney or Murkowski on board in his place.

I'm retracting this post and admitting my mistake after reading what some others have said. But I am still upset that Manchin would pretend to be up in the air about this issue.

It bears repeating, he’s not going to be a nay when he has the deciding vote.

Also, it's probably worth speculating that he's grandstanding and will likely fall in line once he hears from his constituents, one of the poorest states.

I think Schumer can get Manchin on board with a larger aid bill. Atleast that's what I've gleamed from Manchin's comments. I think that's where we're heading anyway.

Schumer wont waste reconciliation on just checks anyway, so we'll get one large stimulus bill.

For just stimulus checks? Not as part of a spending bill?

At the end of the day, Joe Manchin always toes the party line when he’s needed to.
