If Manchin won't even support a $2k stimulus, there's zero chance DC statehood is happening.

this presumes every Republican would vote no.  I am not sure that's the case.

No GOPer will support DC statehood. I am 100% sure of that.

Beneath contempt. Biden needs to somehow convince Susan Collins to join his cabinet so that Dems can pick up her Senate seat

this is a good idea.  if she's gone Dems definitely win it.  Jared Golden for Senate.

I feel like he might be ideal for holding that Senate seat, but what about the House? The majority is already pretty thin, and that would probably just be giving Republicans another seat.

Doubtful Rubio or Hawley would vote yes on a Democratic stimulus that would include +1T for green jobs and union kickbacks in addition to $2k checks

Manchin is so bad. Cue AOC laser beam eyes.

I'm sure 80% of people in West Virginia would support $2k stimulus checks. Who the hell are these people representing?

Republicans had to watch people like McCain shut down their agenda like the ACA skinny repeal in 2017. Now Democrats will also receive the same from someone like Joe Manchin. I would support lowering the filibuster to 55 seats instead of 60 though.

Wild that we are now in a position to be disappointed by individual Republicans instead of Mitch McConnell being the collective naysayer for all of them.

If Hawley has any political savvyness whatsoever, he'll do a press conference in his back yard right now calling Manchin a swamp creature and endorsing 2k checks.

We haven't all received our 600 or tax refunds, it's not like it's gonna pass immediately anyways, it's a selling point just like donations to get you to vote

I'm under the impression there are multiple republican votes for a clean $1,400 increase.

I hope someone primaries Joe Machin. The Dems in 2022 could pick up 3 seats (PA, WI & NC). Florida could be possible. We'll see what happens but I suspect the Dems pick up more Senate seats, especially after the chaos at the Capitol. People will remember this.

Why do such poor states elect such anti-working class politicians? I knew KY had this problem but not WV. I would expect Hawley Republicans and Sherrod Brown Dems from these states, but it's not the case.

I don't get it myself, West Virginia has a long history of populism and union activity, who the hell does he think he is pleasing? Why not save the conservatism for policies that are actually unpopular?

HP remains HP. A little surprised he'd go out of his way to try and sink Biden, though.

Rubio, Hawley, and Graham are already on the record for supporting $2,000 stimulus checks.

I presume he's only doing this because he knows it has Republican votes, so he'll use this vote to maintain his "record" of "independence" from (& "fiscal restraint" compared to) the Democrats. Like I've previously pointed out, though, the man has never cast a deciding vote against the Democratic Party line over the course of his nearly 10 years in the Senate. That's just not changing now.

Yeah, I agree this vote isn’t changing anything, and a lot of the takes in this thread have been very over-the-top, but I don’t get why he’s opposing them, because you would think this would be popular in WV. Maybe he’s terrified of being branded a socialist.

Won't the $2k be part of a larger Democratic stimulus bill though?

Didn't he help confirm some judge that Collins and Murkowski were opposed to?

Where exactly is this constituency for "fiscal restraint" in West Virginia though? The state most certainly didn't leave the Democratic coalition over fiscal policies, so if anything he should be trying to distance himself from Democrats on environmental policy and maybe try trash talking SJW's so they feel he speaks their language.
