There are protests/riots/civil unrest all over this country.

Also many public institutions and public unions are turning their backs on the police. Several public transportation unions have advised their members not to assist in driving large groups of police or detained protesters.

Atlanta is the capital of Black Capitalism, of course, it was going have a lot of people upset. It was also going to have a lot of people try to take advantage of the situation as well.

Is it? Why is Atlanta rather than DC or NYC?
I can't say why, but I've heard this line a few times before.

It has the most well off Black people in the country

As well as a very high percentage of black owned businesses.

I'd say Atlanta is more of the nation's cultural black capital rather than the capital of "black capitalism" (whatever that means). I don't think it has the wealthiest black people at-large/per capita of any metro in the country (I imagine that distinction goes to the DC metro, or maybe even NYC), but it obviously does have a lot of prominent wealthy black residents and plenty of large black-owned businesses - but so does Charlotte.

It was arguably the original Black Mecca for the reversal of the Great Migrations, and its population (metrowide) is currently a majority of the only state in the country where black non-immigrant, non-mixed (i.e. ADOS) population is growing as a share of the population. Even before the reversal, it's the cradle of the Civil Rights movement, a major hub for many modern black cultural pillars, and has generally avoided (even during that era) a regressive climate culturally or economically compared to its Southern peers (relatively speaking).

In my opinion, you can bemoan and be enraged about the looters all day. But the truth of the matter is, even after the current protest wave has burned itself out, it will take maybe another three, four, or five years and America will most likely find iself in exactly the same type of situation again. So, either you simply accept the regular occurance of these kind of riots as part of the American Way or Life or you try to start changing the American Way of Life.

Riots sparked in downtown Portland tonight. The Apple store and Louis Vuitton at Pioneer Place were looted and the MultCo justice center was smashed/fire was started (but it didn’t burn down).

Alright, let's kick the can down the road hypothetically. When do we actually level with this and demonstrate any sort of future? Lives and livelihoods are being lost. Im too young to have any direct memory of the Rodney King events, but I'm old enough to know that decades of non-action has gotten us nowhere.

I don't really know who will solve this or how, but I know that it's not going to be a Republican. Not without a complete party make-over.

Honestly, I don't agree. I see it possibly going on for the next 50+ years. Obviously I'm hoping that's not the case.

Police needs to start bringing out the riot gear and engaging.

That works until it doesn't work and then what? One of these days the police bringing out the riot gear isn't going to do anything. Most police forces in major cities are a couple thousand. NYC has the largest force and is 40k if these protest spread, there are not enough police, riot gear, nor jails to stop anything.

One day with the way things are going you'll wake up to an America where authoritarian crackdowns in the name of "law and order" don't do anything but get cops hurt and anger boils over until it's uncontrollable.

For once I will actually agree with Grassroots, and violent rioters and looters should indeed be crushed by the police. It is the job of the police to uphold law and order and they are failing miserably.

However the Police should leave peaceful protestors alone.

Of course there comes a point where the police gets overwhelmed, and normally at that point they either call backup or they simply retreat and leave some the rioters alone until they disperse.  (probably the ones that are less likely to cause damage and what not).

This video is a good one on explaining how riot control works, though it seems to be centered on the Charlottesville protests:

So, from what I can tell from last night in Minneapolis, prorestors were peaceful, but there are others taking advantage of the situation to commit arson and other crimes.

Maybe it's time to stop protecting and covering up police brutality. Is all this worth it? This chaos will be exploited by all kinds of groups who don't care about justice.
