With everything that’s going on right now, from Trump to Minneapolis to Arbery, I can’t help but think back to what an anonymous stranger told me on a forum for expats when I was researching moving abroad in 2015.

He said that America is going to follow the same path as Cuba: the smartest left on airplanes, the next smartest left on fishing boats, and the dumbest waited until things got so bad that they had no choice but to leave on makeshift rafts made of plywood and empty barrels. Yes, I do. That said, it's also not as divided as this country except the usual religious nonsense, so I wouldn't have to deal with the nonstop division, racial violence, racial this, racial that, Trump this, Trump that, Bernie this, Bernie that. Ireland doesn't seem to have insane political figures, and I'd be able to say I'm a subject of the Queen, which would be an honor. If my biggest problem would be Brexit and whether or not I'm Catholic, that'd be a pretty nice lifestyle.

I've loved MA and Virginia since I went there as a child. Danvers would be my pick if possible, or one of the smaller towns surrounding the area, preferably by a lake or river. I lived in suburban Southern NJ for five years near a giant lake filled with turtles, eels, and the like; my yard would at times have garter snakes, the area under my deck was filled with a family of wild rabbits. I rather miss that lifestyle.
