5/6 (Today):
  • Cases: 1,263,092 (+26,105 | Δ Change: ↑8.09% | Σ Increase: ↑2.11%)
  • Deaths: 74,799 (+2,558 | Δ Change: ↑10.26% | Σ Increase: ↑3.54%)

Cases seems to have decreased in the last week. Deaths continue to be just as bad.

Deaths would always be a lagging indicator.  We also have to remember that testing has ramped up.  Nate Silver tweets a metric every day with the percentage of the tests coming back positive, and that has showed a slow, but steady, decline over the last month or so.

I don't know if there's an official formula for this, but here's what I use to estimate the actual number of new cases each day:

N*(T/5)

'N' is the number of known new cases. 'T' is the percentage of tests that comes back positive.

Based on that formula, the number of actual new cases lately is way, way, way down.

Yes, the curb has been largely flattened at this point, with deaths at highs still because they're a lagging indicator.

However, all of that effort will go to waste if states/people decide to thwart that progress by opening up/going about as usual as if a vaccine has already been developed and administered to the population.

I noticed that for a while worldometers was including 3-week rolling averages in their daily case & death graphs, then briefly switched them to 7-day averages, but have now removed the averages entirely.  I wonder why.

Email them and find out.

Madison has free drive through testing for everyone who comes in. I went in a couple of hours ago. The COVID-19 test SUCKS. My nose still feels violated.

An abrupt reopening is the exact recipe for disaster. Good grief. Have fun with your "economy," then. Most sensible people aren't looking to run out like buffoons as if nothing is happening.

Looking at the responses to the WI supreme Court decision on Twitter really has me thinking. The left is so out of touch these days, it is unbelievable.  They are appealing to emotions and flat out accusing conservatives of murder without thinking of the true consequences of keeping these lockdowns in place. The death models overestimated this, which is good, and we need to open up, badly, ASAP. The economic toll this will have for the next decade is already immense. The authoritarian precedent this sets is also really bad. But you look at which party is advocating for what and maybe you start to see who is for freedom and who is for tyranny.

Yes, really, because Twitter is representative of the population at large. 🙄

A few days ago, I found the "LockdownSkepticism" group on Reddit. It's proof that people across the political spectrum can get along for a common cause. The rank-and-file right is learning that we don't have horns and cloven hooves like their leaders told them we did. We've all got each other's backs in fighting this.

I'm glad that you found a place where your ignorance can be validated.

Did you actually look at the group?

Yep! Here's one of their little nuggets of 'wisdom' and "empirical" analyses:

"These kinds of phrases [Safer at Home] remind me of how abusers do something cruel and then say softly 'it's only because I care about you' or 'it's for your own good.' It's a combination of dominance, boundary violation, control and then gaslighting added on top to put you into a state of confusion so it's harder for you to challenge it/protect your boundaries/say no/leave etc."

There's a bunch more where that came from. I stand by my original statement. Good grief.

I don't necessarily agree with that quote, but it's not as bad as what appears on other sites.
“I don’t necessarily agree with comparing virus-prevention methods to domestic abuse....but....”
Are you seriously listening to yourself?
I’m not even against lifting some lockdowns at this point, but you can’t defend such a ridiculous quote with a both sides argument.

There are people unironically breathing sighs of relief because they can go get their hair done soon. It's nauseating to even consider the historical and contemporary juxtapositions to such a statement in the context that we live.

What's up with these numbers, Sunday is usually the lowest day for deaths.

Deaths are always lagging, so they could be just catching up still. The case increase is not too much, basically flat.

What website do you use?

Worldometer. I update my posts at 6-8 PM CST every day, after states finish reporting.

Yeah but typically coroners' offices are closed on Sundays. This was true during the peaking in April.

Is there a state that did a dump today? I didn't see state-by-state numbers before they wiped the numbers so I didn't get to check for anything out of the ordinary.

Also I see Worldometer only reporting ~860 new deaths on the 17th.

They're counting the start and end times for each day differently, it seems. Whatever they didn't count today was added to their totals for yesterday.

Exactly the same number of deaths as last Monday.

Wow. Statistically speaking, that's quite improbable!
