So apparently Trump just called the coronavirus a hoax at his rally...

Donald Trump and Angela Merkel in comparison:

Merkel - What we need now is a measured response. We shouldn't cancel every public event now, but tonight I'm not going to shake anyone's hands either.

Trump - Coronavirus is a hoax! The stock market is still strong and that's thanks to me and me alone.

That's unhinged.

Even for him, that is probably the most disgusting, disturbing, terrifying, and irresponsible thing to ever leave his mouth.

Can we have a separate thread for the Democrats who are incapable of having a meaningful discussion about a scientific phenomenon without decomposing into a self-interested pursuit of their hatred of Donald Trump.

But he doesn't call virus a hoax. He called Democrats politicizing it a hoax.

But what can you expect of people that Bloomy tricked into believing he was endorsed by Obama  Angry

Two more US cases of unknown origin (no travel to an affected region or known contact with an infected person), bringing the total to four so far: two in CA, one each in OR and WA.

My thoughts on the political aspects of this thread:

The virus is neither pro-Trump or anti-Trump.  It has the potential (although not there yet) to be a major global health crisis.  It is undeniably affecting the global economy already.

This is a political forum, and the response of the government to a crisis should be completely on topic here.  So far the Trump administration has been extraordinarily fortunate in that there have been no major crises during its tenure.  Now it looks like we have one.  The effectiveness of the government's response to the crisis has the potential to either help Trump (e.g. Giuliani after 9/11, Christie and Obama after Hurricane Sandy) or hurt him (Bush after Katrina).  Talking about that response, and what has been done to affect U.S. preparedness, should be completely fair game.

Reporting on the political responses by both Trump and the Democrats also seems to be on topic.  (Aside: it was noted above that Trump is claiming that Democrats' politicization of the response is a hoax.  But in making this claim, Trump is himself politicizing it!)  IMO it should be fine to talk about these aspects here.  However, I agree with the earlier request to leave personal sniping out of it.  This should include things that individual posters may have said in past crises.  Those are not relevant. However, comparing the government's response to past crises seems on topic.

Ironically, the Corona-Virus thread has gone downhill since the infection of Democratic political opinion with the over-exaggerated "i hate trump" posts.

It was a clean Corona-Virus discussion thread before the zombie onslaught of left wing hatred came in and curdled any proper discussion.

The only disease thread on the forum has been diseased.

Really hard to see how this doesn't cause a recession. The disruptions to the global economy have been massive.

Clearly, you wish it, but here are experts thoughts about China:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-coronavirus-is-hammering-chinas-economic-outlook-11582973208
The Coronavirus Is Hammering China’s Economic Outlook
The fate of China’s economy is of crucial importance to a world with few solid drivers of growth
Quote
Many economists predict China’s GDP will fall in the first quarter from the fourth quarter’s pace and finish the year weak. After the purchasing managers’ survey was published, ANZ bank of Australia said China’s GDP would slide to 4.1% this year, including growth of just 2% in the first quarter from a year earlier.
Quote
China’s government says the slowdown will be brief, a view echoed by some economists and the International Monetary Fund, which forecasts the epidemic will reduce China’s economic growth this year by 0.4 percentage point to 5.6%.

Rosy predictions for a quick recovery align with China’s experience in 2003, when the country was hit by an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS. Yet the comparisons are limited, since China’s $14 trillion economy is far larger than it was back then and driven more by services and smaller companies that can’t expect state support.

“We all hope for a V-shaped, rapid recovery,” IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva recently told global finance ministers, “but given the uncertainty, it would be prudent to prepare for more adverse scenarios.”

Obviously, it is way too early and a lot can and will change, but US arguably is better prepared, has more advanced health systems and so its economy is more advanced and robust.

Even if the US is less affected directly by the virus, our economy is intertwined with the global and Chinese economies.  The effects in China are already greatly affecting both supply chain and demand there, which in turn has negative effects on the US economy.

Yes, but most experts forecast rebound of Chinese Economy. IMF revised down its forecast by just 0.4 to 5.6%, while ANZ bank of Australia by 1.9%. If these forecasts come true, US/global economy will rebound as well.

The hospital at which I used to work back in Texas has been running drills in anticipation of mass admits and also to dust off those safety protocols surrounding biohazards/outbreaks.

So liberals are just going to lie down like sheep, and play straight into Trump's hands and the media's narrative that the current market downturn is based on some minor virus caused by people not washing their hands?

And not GOP economic policies?

*sigh*

Today's leftists are quite pathetic.

FDA to Allow Labs to Begin Use of High-Complexity Tests for Coronavirus
Policy means certain labs can begin immediate tests for coronavirus
Quote
The Food and Drug Administration will allow hundreds of U.S. academic hospital labs to immediately begin testing for the novel coronavirus.

The move by the federal agency means that the nation will become able virtually overnight to test thousands of patients rather than the few hundred tested so far.

“We believe this policy strikes the right balance during this public-health emergency,” FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn said in a statement. “We will continue to help to ensure sound science prior to clinical testing and follow-up with the critical independent review from the FDA, while quickly expanding testing capabilities in the U.S. We are not changing our standards for issuing Emergency Use Authorizations. “

The FDA said the new policy is for certain laboratories that develop and begin to use validated Covid-19 diagnostics before the FDA has completed review of its Emergency Use Authorization requests.

The FDA estimated that between 300 and 400 academic medical centers and a few large community hospitals can immediately begin testing.

The nation has until now been limited to a relatively few diagnostic tests done so far by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those initially had some accuracy problems, though the CDC has said those have been remedied.

I have no interest in fighting with you or doing any tit-for-tat bullsh-t. Trump is entirely relevant because he has done little to alleviate anxiety amongst the American people and he's downplaying the crisis at unnecessary campaign rallies.

With Trump, the best bet is always that he will double down. I think he doesn't like the slide in the stock market last week, and he would like it to rebound at the beginning of next week. This would be the bull trap.
