So the tax cuts will help to combat the economic effects of the virus. Okay.

For a minute I was thinking "does Trump understand that money, taxes and the economy are a human social construct that isn't tangible and physically real? Does he know that viruses don't physically interract with the economy?"

For a minute I was thinking "does Trump understand that money, taxes and the economy are a human social construct that isn't tangible and physically real? Does he know that viruses don't physically interract with the economy?"

The thing to understand about Trump is that Trump doesn't care about the virus, or to a considerable extent any other substantive thing related to policy.

Trump cares about being re-elected. The economy is important to that.

So Trump cares about the virus insofar as it affects the economy. And so insofar as he is is inclined towards action involving the virus, he is inclined towards minimizing the negative economic effects of it, as opposed to any concern for its non-economic effects.

This, very much.

You would think that he would care though. As I keep pointing out, he's a notorious germaphobe.

Trump admin is now discussing a tax cut to soothe markets about Coronavirus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S60pGZzB7A4

Obama was right. The Republican party doesn't really know how to do anything but propose tax cuts for the rich.

Just asking in general:

This thread has been a good thread to discuss the risk of this disease and has (mostly) been filled with sincere, fact-based analysis.  Can we please not let this devolve into partisan mud-slinging like it's starting to?  There are a million threads to talk about Trump.  We can note decisions made by him, but this should not be an overly political thread.

This thread is about COVID-19. Trump is the President and criticism of him is fair because people are looking for an organized government plan and response if it is needed.

‘Corona Beer Virus’ Searches Show Brewer Can’t Evade Coronavirus

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-27/corona-beer-takes-a-hit-from-coronavirus-as-brand-image-suffers

Quote
The novel coronavirus has an unlikely victim -- one of the world’s most popular beers.

Corona has become the subject of memes and videos shared on social media as the toll from the virus climbs worldwide. Reports of an increase in online searches for “corona beer virus” and “beer coronavirus” show the Mexican beer hasn’t been able to escape the association. The so-called purchase intent among adults in the U.S. has plunged to the lowest in two years, according to data from YouGov Plc.

The damage has become more severe in recent days as infections spread. Shares of Corona-maker Constellation Brands Inc. dived 8% this week in New York. Corona’s buzz score -- which tracks whether American adults aware of the brand have heard positive or negative things about it -- has tumbled to 51 from a high of 75 at the beginning of the year, YouGov said.

The 8% dive is actually a good sign though compared to the rest of the market.

The company owning the Corona Brand of beer is anticipating a Quarter of a Billion Dollar loss at it's next annual reporting period because of the Corona Virus. Anheuser-Busch reported a US$170M loss in just the last quarter alone.

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/coronavirus-corona-beer-loss-money-outbreak-pandemic-symptoms-a9364371.html

The company has one of the most challenging decisions to make in terms of marketing.

Don't be surprised if it does not spell the end of the brand.

Any thoughts on whether to cancel a vacation to Italy in late May?  I guess I have some time to decide, still.

To which region?

The number of cases outside the quarantined area (50,000 residents inside) is fairly low.

In a perfect world ...
You should link to those threads in which you chided Republicans for exploiting the Ebola "crisis" in 2014. This is what your Party has made modern American politics, so it's time to reap the whirlwind. Suck it up, snowflake.

Hell, your Party tried to sabotage the economy during the worst downturn since the Depression. So don't come begging for our sympathy. Politics is now a bloodsport, and y'all are about to get clocked, deservedly.

Kind of all over.  I'm not planning to go to any of the currently quarantined towns, but I do have 2 nights in Venice and 1 in Milan as part of the trip.

Unless the destination is a COVID-19 hotspot, it won't be nearly as risky as getting there and back.

Late May is a lifetime away in terms of where we may be with this, given the rapidity with which things change and new scientific findings arise.

I suggest the President make an official visit to Wuhan to get to the bottom of this hoax. Maybe let a couple of folks cough on him, too.

Notable surge continues in South Korea. Since the Trump press conference, after no locally transmitted cases since the outbreak of the epidemic approximately six weeks ago, all of a sudden three locally transmitted cases, all unrelated to each other, all at least 100 miles apart, have suddenly been reported in Oregon and California. Fascinating timing.

Death rate.

Officially 2,924 died and 39,485 recovered. The case fatality rate dropped to 6.9%.

The number of confirmed cases by Region:
Total overall: 85,182
Hubei Province: 66,337 (+423)
Outside Hubei, China:  12,914 (+4)
South Korea: 2,931 (+909)
Italy: 889 (+234)
Iran: 388 (+143)
Japan: 234 (+20)

I am guessing this disease is asymptomatic in like 20-30% of cases at least. These new clusters with no connections indicate some people may not even know they have it/may not have symptoms.

Ffs, stop acting like it’s anthrax. That’s half the problem solved right there.

Part of what makes it so bad is that it is not anthrax (in terms of lethality). If it were worse (higher fatality rate) people would take it more seriously, which would help make it harder to spread and easier to contain.

The problem is that it is bad, but not "bad enough" that it puts a complete stop to everything everywhere. It is the Goldilocks virus.

Beats an airborne Ebola.
