From the WSJ, 1 hour ago:

Quote
Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, one of Mr. Biden's Democratic primary opponents, also remains among the leading contenders, the people said. Ms. Warren, who has advised Mr. Biden on economic policy, remains popular among the party's liberal base and has been promoted by a number of leading Biden allies.

Three Black women have risen to be top contenders, according to people close to the campaign, after an unusually public vetting process in which Mr. Biden has been urged by some Democrats to choose a woman of color as his running mate. Candidates and their allies have been making their final pitches to Mr. Biden’s team in recent days in phone calls and virtual meetings due to the coronavirus pandemic, the people said. Rep. Karen Bass (D., Calif.) and former national security adviser Susan Rice have been gaining traction in recent weeks, joining California Sen. Kamala Harris as top candidates of color who are under consideration, according to the people close to the campaign.

Biden would be foolish to pick Bass or Rice.

These women would shave off 3% from his current lead over Trump.

Harris and Warren would be OK.

Demings and Duckworth would be vastly preferable.

Hopefully Biden ain't that stupid to pick the controversial Bass or Rice.

Ughh, hope it's not Warren. Don't know that I could live with her being president if Biden died or with her running in his stead in 2024. Harris seems like the most solid choice of everyone mentioned.

This is nothing that hasn't already come from other places. The truth is if the inner circle likes Duckworth, they're going to keep it quiet.

Warren, like Rice is a lightning rod for the right. Do no harm. Republicans WILL relitigate Benghazi. You can count on it.

Why would they? To introduce a virtual unknown to the public 90 days before the election? 🤔 Would make more sense to get her name/positive attributes out there for public consumption

I think with Duckworth\KLB being named permanent co-chairs of the campaign, they're effectively out of contention (for VP anyway). I can totally see Duckworth as Secretary of Defense. A much better pick than Gillibrand, tbh.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/07/31/why-would-biden-pick-human-lightning-rod-vp/

Article on why Susan Rice would be a bad pick. She brings nothing new in terms of experience, background or electoral appeal, is apparently known for picking fights and making enemies, and wasn't nominated as Secretary of State in 2013 because she wouldn't be able to get confirmed even though the Senate was in Democratic hands at that time.

On the other hand, what happened the last time Biden ran on a national ticket with a biracial Illinois Senator who had spent time growing up in Hawaii and Southeast Asia?

Also this (https://www.foxnews.com/politics/sen-tammy-duckworths-big-idea-a-marshall-plan-for-coal-country) is exactly the kind of thing that Biden can get behind.

And I'm not sure how seriously Warren is being considered, but Trump's campaign is seriously struggling in part because they can't find an effective attack on Biden. He would love nothing more than to bring back Pocahontas.

Interesting that Warren is leading among independents in the YouGov VP poll.

She could also appeal to suburban women who are emerging as a key swing bloc.

Kamala is #1 among rural voters - that's surprising.

Where are you seeing those crosstabs?

I think I quoted the wrong poll/post.

However, here is the link: https://docs.cdn.yougov.com/l9txxcxdi3/20200730_yahoo_coronavirus_crosstabs.pdf

I'm surprised Harris polls so well with lower income voters. Also, what's up with Rice's strength with latinos?

I don't know if I have to laugh or cry at the thought of Dodd vetting Bass and coming out thinking she would be the better pick.

The challenge for Bass is that Biden doesn't know her very well. He's a man who values strong personal connections and wants to replicate the kind of relationship he had with Obama... according to what we have heard, at least. Unfortunately, that would would also hurt Duckworth's chances.

On the other hand, that would boost Rice and Harris.

Presumably some time in the week of August 10th.  The convention is then the following week, the week of August 17th.

This all seems like a fairly standard vetting process. Biden, like any nominee, was always likely to go through a full interview process with several candidates, and announce closer to the convention. It makes no difference if he does have a personal favorite like Harris. Clinton probably had Kaine as her favorite, but was still reported to be considering multiple candidates up until showtime.
