Turn Five
January 3rd - January 21st

THIS IS THE FINAL TURN BEFORE THE NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARIES, SOUTH CAROLINA (R) PRIMARIES, AND THE NEVADA (D) CAUCUSES

Note: schedule your campaigns as if all three of the above contests occurred on January 21st, for logistical purposes.

Headlines:

Wisconsin activists reach signature goal to schedule snap election to recall Governor Walker
In protest of Governor Scott Walker's public fight last year to restrict collective bargaining rights of public workers and his cuts in the social safety net, volunteers gather more than one million signatures to force a recall election

Costa Concordia wrecks off the coast of Italy
There are 32 confirmed deaths in one of the largest cruise ship disasters in recent history as the Costa Concordia wrecked just off the coast of an Italian island, captain's negligence being blamed for the tragedy

Jeb Bush withdrawals from race
After a lackluster performance in Iowa, and declining poll numbers, Jeb Bush withdrew from the race for officially unknown reasons

2012 campaign consolidates as fields enter New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada
Remaining candidates in respective fields vie to battle it out over the next few months as the fields consolidate around stronger candidates

RCP Job Approval Average (President Obama):

Disapprove: 53%
Approve: 42%
Unsure: 5%

RCP National Average:

Generic Republican: 45%
Generic Democrat: 40%
Michael Bloomberg (I): 7%
Undecided: 8%

RCP Republican Average:

Mike Huckabee: 28%
Rudy Guiliani: 24%
Jim DeMint: 23%
Michelle Bachmann: 19%
Adam Carolla: 1%
Undecided: 5%

With Iowa, often the strongest test of a candidates' performance on the campaign trail, now officially over, the field has begun to consolidate around four comparatively strong candidates in the field. With Huckabee leading the pack by a healthy four-point margin after winning not only the televised debate in Iowa, but the Iowa Caucuses themselves, he has begun to transition his campaign from a second-tier campaign to a frontrunners' campaign. The debate, of note included a strong performance by Huckabee, who was able to captivate the audience with his oratory skills and policy details, also included formidable runners-up performances in the form of DeMint and Bachmann, who both respectively were able to provide exactly what their bases wanted.

Particularly of note is how Jeb's former supporters distributed. Many of his staunch supporters, being moderate, in fact distributed to Guiliani's grassroots campaign over the current frontrunner, Huckabee's. However, many of his supporters remain fluid and will be up for grabs in the coming weeks. After the spectacularly close finish in Iowa, where every major candidacy (markedly with the absence of Jeb's campaign) declaring victory, all eyes are now on New Hampshire, where polls show Guiliani with a healthy lead, and South Carolina, which looks to be shaping up to be yet another close race, with Huckabee's efficient messaging and endorsement by the Governor and DeMint's home state factor and organized ground operations putting the race into a dead heat.

RCP Democratic Average:

Michelle Obama: 42%
Joe Biden: 32%
Russ Feingold: 13%
Phil Bredesen: 8%
Evan Bayh: 2%
Howard Dean: 1%
Undecided: 2%

While the Republican race for the nomination has drawn the candidates closer, the Democratic race has done exactly the opposite. With a reversal of fortunes from the beginning of the campaign, where Obama was down five points, to now, where Obama is up ten, her campaign continues to eat away at the coalitions of her opponents. While Biden's campaign still has a shot at the nomination, markedly, in New Hampshire, where his fortunes have improved significantly (however, this is mostly due to the collapse of Dean's campaign), his campaign may soon be in the early stages of formally conceding the nomination to Obama, which can only be stopped by a quite miraculous turnaround in messaging and strategy.

Just behind Biden lies a steady Feingold, who has, mostly under the radar, significantly increased his appeal among Midwestern primary and caucus goers over the past month, which could show some promise for his campaign as the primary progresses into the later stages, specifically, into Wisconsin. Only a few points behind Feingold is a strengthened Bredesen, who, after participating in a very fiery debate during the Second Democratic Debate (which Obama narrowly won with her poise and expertise, not to overshadow a very close joint second place finish by Bredesen and Feingold, who both successfully rebut many of the former's debate responses), significantly improved his approvals among Southern voters.

PLEASE READ
Moderator's notes: This turn will last until Saturday night, at 11:59:59 PM CDT. Make sure to PM me ASAP if you need an extension, preferably after you read this sentence. There will be no debate this turn. During this turn, I will release the randomly generated news.

You are allowed two endorsements per turn, so make sure to PM me your endorsements so that I can approve of them, and endorsements are first-come, first-serve. Endorsements are now open for NH/SC (for Rs only)/NV (for Ds only) statewide offices and newspapers for this turn. Endorsements are still first come, first serve, and they do count towards your two-endorsement per turn limit.

This turn will last a few weeks in January, covering the New Hampshire, South Carolina (R), and Nevada (D) contests. Make sure to schedule your campaign accordingly.

A schedule is required. You can post 20 speeches or no speeches, but what is required for you to post is your schedule. It doesn't have to be detailed, just give me a short description of each day's (or week's) events.

Advertisements: if you poll more than 15% nationally, you may run two advertisements. If you poll between 10% and 15%, you may run one advertisement, and if you poll below 10%, build up your campaign so that next round you can have a shot at running advertisements!

(For the general election: ad thresholds are 5% for one ad, and 7.5% for two.)

Phil Bredesen Campaign Schedule (January 4th-January 21st)

January 4th-16th
- Campaign across South Carolina to build up voter base

- Attack Joe Biden on his many scandals (1988 Plagiarism, 2007 comment on Obama's candidacy, Biden's many verbal gaffe)

- Campaign on Foreign Policy idea of Big Moral Diplomacy, a mash-up of President Teddy Roosevelt's Big Stick diplomacy and President Woodrow Wilson's Moral Diplomacy. The main idea is to make the military stronger and prepare it better for the future as well as not dealing with countries that have violated civil rights nor recognized atrocities that they have committed in the past (such as Turkey and the Armenian Genocide) before throwing in a slight jab at President Obama for promising to recognize and denounce Turkey for the Armenian Genocide while campaigning only to never stick to his promise.

- Peel away reluctant Feingold, Bayh, Dean, and Biden supporters by going Grassroots and having supporters go door to door to help build up Bredesen's support base.

- End the campaigning in South Carolina for the time being with a Rally in Myrtle Beach, where he talks about his performance in the debate:

- Meet with voters across the state and answer their various questions.

- Attack Biden on his many scandals and attack Michelle Obama on the idea of creating a presidential dynasty with her running.

- Start up a grassroots campaign of supporters going door to door asking people if they'll vote.

- Campaign on Free Trade and Big Moral Diplomacy, an idea that no other Democratic candidate has had before (BMD, that is).

- Scrape away reluctant Obama, Feingold, Biden, Bayh, and Dean supporters by doing Town Halls and answering the questions of undecideds.

- End Current Campaign in Florida with a rally in Miami on the 21st attacking Michelle on the no experience idea while also attacking both her and Biden on being the hope and change candidate and preaching about it like Obama himself did in 2008:

- Watch the CNN Coverage of the New Hampshire Primary for both Parties, the Republican South Carolina Primary, and the Democratic Nevada Caucus on the 21st.

Every surrogate except Karl Dean, Al Gore, and Amy Klobuchar campaigns in South Carolian to help raise Bredesen's support as Dean continues to campaign in Tennessee and Gore as well as Klobuchar campaigns in Florida.

Announcement from the New York Independence Party:  January 5th, Rochester, Monroe County, New York.

Fred Thiele, Assembly Leader of the NY Independence Party making the announcement.

Hello Ladies and Gentlement.  Today I am proud to say that the New York Independence Party has voted unanimously to endorse Michael Bloomberg's candidacy for President of the United States!  His record of fiscal responsibility, fighting for the middle class, commitment to independence of Republicans and Democrats, and his independence from donors is exactly what the Party believes is best for New York and The United States.

I'll be proudly campaigning for Bloomberg/King ticket throughout the year, and will be voting for it's Independence Ballot line.  I'd like to remind all New Yorkers and Americans that Bloomberg/King will still be listed on the Ballot under the Independent line, as Bloomberg/King has already achieved ballot access, and now they will also be listed as the nominee for the Independence Party.

Thank you all for your time, I'll see you all on the campaign trail and in November when the Bloomberg/King ticket wins New York!

January 16th, 2012:  Michael Bloomberg holding a special rally in Texarkana, Bowie County, Texas.

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen of Texarkana!  Over the past few months, the Bloomberg/King campaign has gained significant traction among Americans, gaining millions of supporters nationwide and the endorsements of several major politicians, such as Senators Joe Lieberman and Olympia Snowe, and Governors Andrew Cuomo and Charlie Baker, as well as the New York Independence Party recently.  We've begun to give America an option that will fight purely for them, and for common sense change to benefit all of America.  We've gained so many allies in this fight, and today I'm here to announce another ally is joining us.  So please allow me to... wait, no I'll just let him introduce himself.  Come on out my friend!

Ross Perot walks out onto the stage to a massive applause from the crowd.

Hello Texarkana!  Thank you all for the warm welcome, truly.  Now for those of you who might not know, my name is Ross Perot, and 20 years ago I launched my run for President to give America another option, instead of just a choice between the two parties that had begun to fail them.  My run didn't succeed, as you all know, but nearly 20 million people heard my message and wanted real change.  Now looking at the two party system today, the problems I saw have only grown worse.  America's Economy is in shambles, our debt and budget are out of control, jobs are leaving our country in droves, and politicians are being bought out even more since the Citizens United decision.  Worst of all, instead of trying to solve the problems that face our country, both parties are just blaming eachother and refusing to work together, moving increasingly towards the radical left and right instead of the center where most Americans are.

That is why I'm backing the Bloomberg/King ticket today.  They're committed to cutting into our deficit and national debt, lowering taxes on businesses to bring back jobs, to fighting for fairer trade deals for America, they're unable to be bought out by any donor, and finally, they're committed to uniting America and ending the partisan gridlock that has only made our Nation's problems worse.

In the coming days, weeks, and months I'll be campaigning for this ticket across America, fighting for a new option for the American People.  It'll be the toughest fight I've ever fought, but United as Americans we can win this campaign.  Now, onwards to November, and to Victory for Bloomberg/King!  Thank you all!  And God Bless Texarkana, The Great State of Texas, and the United States of America!

Campaign Goals

  • Recruit Minnesota Percent Captains
  • Focus on helping business, protecting the second amendment, lowering taxes and shrinking government
  • Reach out to conservative Huckabee voters in Florida, South Carolina, Minnesota and New Hampshire
  • Reach out to conservative DeMint voters in Florida and New Hampshire
  • Reach out to anti-establishment Carolla voters in New Hampshire
  • Expand Florida and South CarolinaCampaign
  • Reach out to African-Americans in Florida and South Carolina
  • Reach out to Veterans in New Hampshire, Florida and South Carolina
  • Expand Minnesota, New Hampshire and Florida Campaigns
  • Bring out voters through texts and calls

Surrogate Schedule

  • Susan B. Anthony List: The SBA list which helped build the grassroots in Iowa started to do the same in Florida and in Minnesota. Like in Iowa, the SBA passed out literature and sent some of their members down to Florida and Minnesota to gather support.
  • Cyrus Bachmann: In the months before January Cyrus stayed mainly off the trail but going into the New Hampshire primary, he joined Michele at many events across the state.  The Bachmann campaign decided to bring Cyrus out now since New Hampshire likes to see the family image. Cyrus was vital on the last day of the campaign in New Hampshire where he would give the post-New Hampshire speech which was meant to lower expectations from the Bachmann campaign since it meant it wasn't important to them.
  • Rep. Marsha Blackburn: As the campaign's attention turned more south, Blackburn had a more prominent role on the campaign trail and appread with Bachmann many times in Florida in the week. Not only did Blackburn show up on the trail with Bachmann but she also held campaign rallies on her own to energize Bachmann's base of support. Blackburn also became the face of the campaign instead of Rep. Kristi Noem.
  • Gov. Phil Bryant: With the campaigns main attention on Florida which borders Mississippi, Bryant got a more prominent role in the campaign. Bryant helped determine what the campaign wanted to base their issues on and where they should start to target their voters in South Carolina and Florida.
  • Rep. Allen West: West took a prominent role in bringing on African-Americans and veterans to the campaign especially since South Carolina and Florida have large military bases near them and both have large African-American populations that many Republicans ignore when campaigning in the south. West also leads the South Carolina GOTV effort.
  • Condoleezza Rice: After endorsing Bachmann she helped bring former Bush supporter on to her campaign since she served in Bush 43 administration. Rice also helped West with recruiting African-American to the campaign and also helped make Bachmann look like the best option for the voters who want a good foreign policy president
  • Carly Fiorina: Fiorina like Perot was a business professional and helped Bachmann look like the business-friendly, anti-establishment candidate. Fiorina like Rep. Blackburn appeared more on TV interviews and held many more campaign rallies. Fiorina helped lead the New Hampshire GOTV effort.

Statement from Feingold

Ladies and gentlemen, it's been one hell of a ride. However, we have to face facts. We have a chance to enact a bold progressive agenda for the future, but only if we unite around one candidate.

You know me and what I stand for. I have been waving the progressive flag for several years. I voted against the iraq War and the PATRIOT Act and have been vindicated by these votes. The progressive agenda is the American agenda, and I have not championed progressive ideals to see them crushed by the same voices who would see us out of the party, when we have the standard, establushment ideas of people like the Vice President or Senator Bayh, or a former progressive turned establishment lackey like Howard Dean.

We need to unite around a candidate that will see the progressive agenda put in place all over this country. To this end, I hereby announce my withdrawal from the race for the 2012 Democratic Party Presidential nomination, and give my full support to First Lady Michelle Obama.

Michele Bachmann GOTV Effort
New Hampshire GOTV Effort

In New Hampshire, the Bachmann campaign has little hope of winning New Hampshire but they hope with the momentum from Iowa that she would be able to pick up some delegates or even if lucky be able to win third place. Carly Fiorina was used as the Bachmann campaigns main surrogate in New Hampshire since many residents in New Hampshire care about business. Fiorina also lead the GOTV effort in New Hampshire.

Bachmann campaign targeted the northern rural part of the state since it had more conservative voting tendencies.  Bachmann also targeted women like in Iowa, veterans, DeMint and Huckabee voters. Bachmann thinks she can win over veterans since Allen West endorsement speech calling her the most pro-military candidate.

Bachmann, if she wants to succeed exceptions, would be 15%+ and win Hart Location which is one of the counties that vote at midnight.

South Carolina GOTV Effort

Bachmann campaign believes that South Carolina is winnable, unlike New Hampshire. Since Bachmann surged more than 14% in the month of December and after Iowa and if she continues the surge she believes that she will have a close first or second place. If Bachmann is not able to achieve she is trying to be able to take second place and try to slow Huckabee's momentum by pushing him into third place.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn, former SOS Condoleeza Rice, Gov. Phil Bryant and Rep. Allen West all were the main surrogates in South Carolina. West also led the GOTV South Carolina effort and helped recruit both African-Americans and veterans to her campaign.

Bachmann wants to win over African-Americans, veterans, and women to her campaign in South Carolina. Bachmann also wants to win over conservative counties in South Carolina and counties around the myrtle beach area which is one of the most conservative counties in South Carolina.

Succeeding exceptions in South Carolina for the Bachmann campaign would be winning over 25%+ support.
