Updated unemployment filings in Austria:

In the past 4 days, 75.000 additional people (!) have filed for unemployment.

At the end of February, there were about 350.000 registered unemployed here - so that’s a jump of more than 20% in 4 days alone.

And that’s on top of most companies sending their employees home for home office work or paid vacation right now ...

For the first time we have more than 100 deaths a day, 372 in total, up 108 from yesterday.

An interesting data, basically all the French (96%) approve the lockdown

Update on Portugal: 785 cases as of today, a 22% increase, one of the lowest increases in a while. We'll see how tomorrow performs.

13% of the infected are hospitalized, the other 87% are quarantined at home, There are 4 dead until the moment, with one being unoficial.

There is a city, Ovar, Aveiro district, in complete shutdown

Public conversation in Germany has changed over the last 24 hours as we near 15,000 cases (but still less than 50 deaths). Some state governments are now openly considering public lockdowns similar to France, Italy and Spain. Reason is because too many people don't pay enough attention to calls for social distancing and avoid gatherings. I read local press reports that police has to dissolve several "corona parties" by young folks. On Sunday, there is a meeting with federal government officials, including Merkel, to discuss further measures. Merkel has so far been reluctant about that, but it may be a last ressort if infections continue to increase by this much (current speed is over 1,000 a day).

Two counties in Bavaria, that are considered hotspots, have already imposed a public lockdown. Markus Söder, Bavarian minister-president, is seriously considering a statewide lockdown. He issued a clear warning today if people don't change behavior.

I'd bet a ton of money the real number of infected people in Italy is far higher than 100,000. Probably even over 200,000.

Quite possibly. I posted earlier this morning that official cases are likely to increase exponentially here in Spain. Right now people with light symptoms is not taking the test, but this policy is going to change. We are trailing Italy by 10 days

The Oberammergau Passion Play, which I had a ticket for, has been postponed until 2022 after the local authorities in that area prohibited the organisers from holding the full May to October run.

Coronavirus cases are more common in ÖVP-Green voting areas, not so much in SPÖ-FPÖ voting areas ...

The president of Argentina has declared (with the full support of the opposition, state governments and the media) a state of Total Quarantine which will begin at midnight and will last until (at least) March 31

Only a few sectors of the economy will be functioning (supermarkets and grocery stores/minimarkets/greengrocers, pharmacies and banks under a lot of restrictions) as will the healthcare system, security forces and a few posts in the Justice system

A curfew will be imposed in all  major cities and all other pla and you can be sentenced for up to 2 years in jail for violating the curfew without proper cause (so far the only proper causes are going to buy groceries or pharmacy products or working in one of the few sectors that will be working semi-normally)

Public transportation in the Buenos Aires area will be severely restricted (this last one is independent from the national quarantine)

Private hospitals, hospitals and sports club will cooperate with the public healthcare system

Schools and colleges have been closed since last week, and international borders are also closed

Yesterday evening I had a videoconference with two friends who live in Buenos Aires. They were at a coterie meeting with other people, the last before confinement. I told them about my last week living in quarantine. I believe Argentina is the first country in Latin America to join our club

New Market and Gallup polls:

98% of Austrians have changed their way of life and are living according to the new guidelines to reign in the virus.

The government and individual government members such as Chancellor Kurz, Health Minister Anschober etc. are all getting very high grades of approval for handling the situation.

But almost 30% of Austrians also think that Coronavirus was deliberately produced by a foreign power to unleash it on the population ...

Alert: A malicious website pretending to be the live map for Coronavirus COVID-19 Global Cases by Johns Hopkins University is circulating on the internet waiting for unwitting internet users to visit the website (corona-virus-map[dot]com). Visiting the website infects the user with the AZORult trojan, an information stealing program which can exfiltrate a variety of sensitive data. It is likely being spread via infected email attachments, malicious online advertisements, and social engineering.

The growth of new cases is a bit lower today in Austria, compared with recent days:

As of 8am, there are positive 2.203 cases (of which 9 are fully recovered and 6 dead).

That's an increase of 19% compared with 8am yesterday.

In previous days, the increase was about 26-28% per day.

Not sure if that's a good translation for the Spanish word ''tertulia''

I just googled it. There's no word in English except for "coterie" that I found, but I've never heard anybody use the word "coterie" in my life. Uncommon word.

We would say...

The ÖVP-Green government has announced a 40 Bio. € package for the economy (= 10% of GDP) and that thousands of soldiers and former civil servants will be re-activated to help out in supermarkets or elsewhere, so that the police can check and fine people on the streets who are in groups and not separated by at least 2 meters from each other.
