I wonder if Chicago will forcibly remove Trump's name from Trump tower that facing the Chicago River. Its so big and bold in the middle  of the city, and I think the city's residents will definitely want it removed or moved elsewhere(kinda like Trump tower outside of the strip in Las Vegas)

I could see that happening. Frankly, it's a miracle his name has stayed on there all these years, because he is loathed in the city. Same with the one in New York.

At this point, why does it matter if the GOP is coddling or not coddling Trump?  They have no power anymore.  Thanks Ossoff.

The GOP has more actionable and durable power in the US and has for some time. They control the federal judiciary and have a comfortable majority on SCOTUS, the country's real policy-making engine (hence why they care so much about it), and total control in nearly a majority of states. Probably will have a lot more post-2022. And the entire election system is biased in favor of their party by so much that they don't even need majority support to cling to power.

The amount of power they have is scary given the direction they've been heading in the past 10 years. And quite frankly, the Democratic Party as it exists right now is ill-equipped to fight back, if it even had the Congressional majorities they would need to do so. That's the problem of being the party of good government. They aren't willing to do what it takes to push back against a party whose primary reason for existing right now is to consolidate as much power in their hands by almost any means necessary. If they were, the filibuster would be gone Jan 21st and we'd be looking at a larger SCOTUS, several new states, HR1 & a new VRA, just to start. Instead, we'd be very lucky to see to DC statehood, although I'm happy it's at least a theoretical option. It wasn't before January. It's something, I guess.

Don't get me wrong, this is one of my biggest pet peeves ever, but what would be the justification? I feel like its more likely that the ownership/name of the tower changes than the city successfully forces them to remove the name.

Quote
FBI agents took Eric Gavelek Munchel, age 30, into custody on a federal arrest warrant charging him with one count of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. He was booked into a Nashville jail at 2:50 p.m.

Trespassing and disorderly conduct? Where are the real charges? He didn't find the taser and restraints in some closet in the Capitol - he brought them with him all the way from Tennessee to take prisoners in the Capitol.

Have we ever had an acting President before?

H.W. and Cheney both served as acting President, but under Section 3, not Section 4.

One could make a case for Edith Wilson, though obviously that was in a *highly* unofficial capacity.
They were married.

I think John Tyler's critics referred to him as "acting president" because there was no precedent for how a president was supposed to govern after not having been elected as president.

Going through the social media of rightwingers (including family and community members), none of these people have learned their lessons. They are absolutely hysterical right now, believing a dictatorship of The Left is imminent and we'll be a socialist/communist/Nazi country within a week and a half. A guy who previously was a member of my local Democratic Party (i'm not friends with him, but he popped up in the comments of a mutual friend) and is a police officer has been posting almost nonstop for the past 24 hours the most insane right-wing stuff about how the downfall of America is imminent and we're going to become a totalitarian state.

These people are in full-on psycho mode. They are 100% convinced that the End Times are here or whatever and there is a massive conspiracy against them happening right now. The violence definitely isn't over. I'm genuinely worried about what will happen next week.

Awwww! How sweet of her. She's such a good mom! Did she do his laundry too and make sure he had clean underwear too?

I'm sure his mom is on the look out for a nice decent Magaette to marry him! He wants someone just like mommy.

I asked a friend of mine who’s a police officer why some of these officers didn’t fire when clearly had justified shoots, and his reply was:
My service weapon has 12 round, and I have two spare mags. 36 rounds. In some of these cases, there was one or two officers running away from dozens of these guys. Hopefully you have 100% accuracy but you’re probably outnumbered and will be out of bullets quickly. If you get overpowered you’re gonna get killed with your own gun too.

I mean, I get that, it’s clear the officers were extremely outnumbered, but still. I figure after bodies are going down, some would have fled.

I wish I could double recommend a post.

Again, these officers were sold out at highest levels of their organization and left without sufficient backup

Yeah, and if I think about it it’ll probably take 3 shots center mass to take somebody down, so you drop 4 people before reloading and you are then tackled by the rest of the mob. Still though, if there were shots coming out I would think some would’ve at least backed up. It’s still upsetting that these officers were basically abandoned and nobody really sent in a rescue squad.

What is the context of this statement? What "peaceful" protesters is he referring to? None of the people who stormed the Capitol were "peaceful".

Methinks this question will be moot soon. Deutsche Bank will repossess it either before or after Trump declares bankruptcy and will take down the eyesore letters.

Toronto:

Panama:

These videos now feel like what happens when a dictator is overthrown and the people tear down the monuments to the ex-Dear Leader.

Who would want to buy a former Trump asset?  Even with Trump no longer associated with it, the Trump stench will reduce its value. Unless it's a property that's uniquely suited for your business, best to wait to buy it out of the bankruptcy proceedings where you can at least say you didn't give Trump money, just his creditors.
The Trump Tower here in Toronto was bought for less than its outstanding mortgage by Marriott after the creditors repossessed it, and the whole thing is now history.

The Trump hotel in Toronto was never owned by Trump, it was just a licensing and management agreement. That was when the Trump name was merely divisive and not synonymous with treason, and when the hospitality industry was booming worldwide.

That's true. He went into the Toronto real estate market during its biggest ever boom, and structured the project so that he earned his fees while the investors were squeezed into bankruptcy. It was the only real estate project in Toronto to go bankrupt for more than a decade.

Nonetheless, my point stands. Once the properties are no longer in his possession either due to repossession or forced sale, they will no longer carry the stigma. If the buyer were smart, they would give free office space to the ACLU or another group.

You know, I wonder if all the Cubans and others in Florida who voted for Trump because they thought BIDEN would somehow be the one to turn the US into a banana republic are regretting it now.

Many of them are descended from the kinds of people who were orchestrating right-wing coups in their own country, so...
