Remember in 2018 when he announced his vote for Kavanaugh literally five minutes after Susan Collins (whose aye rendered Manchin’s vote irrelevant)?

Are people seriously pretending that giving $2k to literally everyone is better than targeting support to people who lost their jobs?

To my knowledge the full 2k checks don't go to everyone, so this a mute point.

Can we change the title so people don't fall for this

Something like

"Manchin Obfuscates on 2k Checks"

I hope he switches parties at this point. I'm fed up with him. He is better than the alternatives in WV, but that makes our work in 2022 to get actual Democrats elected to rebuild the Senate majority even more important. We should consider him a no on just about every crucial piece of legislation for the next 2 years and work to bring Romney or Murkowski on board in his place.

R2D2 I know you're just mad, but you know that this is stupidity.

Ok, I reacted out of anger and my post is stupid in retrospect. But I don't take these things lightly. It's frustrating to see how hard we worked to get Biden elected and get Warnock and Ossoff elected just to have Manchin playing politics here. I don't want to waste at least the next 2 years playing politics. I want to get sh*t done.

I'm fine with giving it to everyone as long as it's clawed back next year through the tax system.

It was going to people making under $75k. I don't know where this stupid "Socialism for the Rich" that McConnell kept spewing came from. It'll be nice to see Moscow Mitch has finally lost power and I don't think he'll ever be Majority Leader again.

I presume he's only doing this because he knows it has Republican votes, so he'll use this vote to maintain his "record" of "independence" from (& "fiscal restraint" compared to) the Democrats. Like I've previously pointed out, though, the man has never cast a deciding vote against the Democratic Party line over the course of his nearly 10 years in the Senate. That's just not changing now.

Won't the $2k be part of a larger Democratic stimulus bill though?

Theres a clean house bill that's just for $1400. I assume Schumer will take that up.

Will that get 10 Republican votes?

Reconciliation

For just stimulus checks? Not as part of a spending bill?

I thought it went without saying that this would be part of a large spending bill Tongue

Read up in the thread you were quoting...

If Manchin won't even support a $2k stimulus, there's zero chance DC statehood is happening.

this presumes every Republican would vote no.  I am not sure that's the case.

LOL what? You think a Republican is going to vote to allow 2 more Dem senators?

Don't worry Manchin is just pulling his schtick.

He's taking dead aim at the GOP majority.

It should go to anyone who had income loss as a result of the pandemic (if that isn't the case already?). In this case, 2k is even the bare minimum. With 24 trillion in debt, money should only be given to those in need.

Don't expect him to vote for Bernie/AOC type proposals. But if Schumer is trying to do something, Manchin will 99% go along with it.

At the end of the day, Joe Manchin always toes the party line when he’s needed to.

So yeah he's probably going to go along with it eventually but just wants more pork for WV. With Manchin as the deciding vote on so many things, the next 4 years could see West Virginia transformed from an impoverished backwater of dying mining towns to a land of gleaming skyscrapers and high-speed trains, if Manchin can play his cards right.

The SSA and FICA RAXES that we pay into the system regardless if you lose your job or not is already given to the Govt.  The Stimulus monies and our tax refunds comes directly from the SSA trust fund, that Rs gave oil subsidizies huge tax cuts in 2017, every Stimulus money are already taxes we paid into system already

2 years. 2022 is likely a 2018 redux (POTUS party gains Senate, loses House)

Manchin's statement from earlier tanked the stock market. That's probably why he released a follow up statement.

I wonder if he can squeeze any special deal for WV out of this, or if that is being saved for later votes.

Where exactly is this constituency for "fiscal restraint" in West Virginia though? The state most certainly didn't leave the Democratic coalition over fiscal policies, so if anything he should be trying to distance himself from Democrats on environmental policy and maybe try trash talking SJW's so they feel he speaks their language.

Yeah, this is bizarre. This would be a popular position for the large majority of West Virginians, or at least every single one who could ever possibly conceivably even consider voting for manchin.

What's more, what is he have to lose? Surely he's not going to attempt reelection again in for years. He'll be too old, and even he probably can't pull off another narrow victory The Way West Virginia continues trending Republican.

Seriously, WTF Joe.
