Meaning there are no official nominees and all candidates are listed without party affiliation. Kind of like Mayoral elections in Chicago, I believe.

Still an oxymoron.
Why would candidates be listed without party affiliation in a US Senate race? Louisiana, California, and Georgia (only for special elections) have nonpartisan primaries with affiliation on listed on the ballot.

Same thing happened in a recent special for a state legislature seat.

Imagine a world where Mississippi has Senators Hood and Presley in 2019?

After last night, I wonder what an open Presley vs McDaniel race would look like in 2018...

It sounds like Bannon is courting him and it's working.

If the GOP nominates McDaniel and somehow manages to give Democrats another senator from the Deep South, I don't think I'm ever going to stop laughing

Yeah. And Presley's a pretty popular figure in northern Mississippi. The state has a higher black vote than Alabama so He's have more room for error with white voters.

Presley, Bredesen, O'Rourke, Graham, Evans... could be the return of the southern white Democrats next year. With Jeff Jackson in 2020 too.

Presley has to run now. We demand a competitive election in Mississippi.

I wonder what a Gene Taylor vs. McDaniel would look like

In a perfect world, Mississippi will have Senators Presley/Mabus and Governor Hood by 2019.

I think Gene Taylor would win as well against McDaniel, the question is how he wins the primary

Especially considering he's a Republican now.

Who knows though? He just did it to challenge Palazzo.

Presley's been gushing over Jones on Twitter though, calling him his kind of Democrat.

Politico also says he is being heavily courted.

You can probably thank Trump.

I mean hey, if it makes the Democrats drop identity politics and go back to being the JFK party, sure.

I'm a straight white male and I can be pretty much assured that the GOP is the bigger identity politics party

Not really unless your name is Corey Stewart. A big thing of Hillary's campaign was "I'M A WOMAN" so...

I have some news for you about who's going to be the Republican nominee for Senate in Virginia next year.

Yeah, if you bring up Clinton, it's fair game to bring up King, Gohmert and Arpaio.

Presumably McDaniel moves into this race and Wicker walks.

I think so too.

Aren't MS special elections non-partisan?

Yes, I believe there would be no party on the ballot for this special (but everyone will know Presley is the Dem and McDaniels is the Repub).

I think that's for state elections. Federal elections are not.

The 2008 special was non-partisan.

A hypothetical Sen. Presley would immediately up for re-election during a presidential year? Sad

If he could do it in 2018, he can do it again two years later if 2020 is another bad year for Republicans and a Democrat wins the White House.

I think two Senate elections could harm Presley here. It would drive up GOP turnout, no? Whatever seat he doesn't run for is going to be an R landslide.

Agreed. Which is maybe why Wicker being unopposed could be a net positive? No one would turn out for him or his race. All attention would be on the special.

If he was gonna resign, wouldn't he have done it by now?

Maybe, but the shut down might be throwing a wrench in things.

McConnell's trying to get Bryant to appoint himself.

Is this thread for this year's MS Senate election too?

David Baria is in for Democrats. Could be good insurance if McDaniels pulls through and screws over Republicans.

Feel like Trump's approvals among Republican voters in Mississippi are one of the most obvious and useless numbers ever.

They're... decent I guess. The Democrat will want to face McDaniel in the runoff.

This is probably more a reaction to Shelton declaring.

Word on the ground is that WaPo writers have been reaching out to former McDaniel staffers (most likely from his 2014 campaign) to source a story about an affair McDaniel had with fellow state senator and campaign manager Melanie Sojourner.
Why is this news though? I don’t support McDaniel (at all) but it seems more befitting for a tabloid rags  than a serious news story.

WaPo won't publish the story if they can't verify it with multiple sources, unlike a tabloid rag.
