Some ridiculous news out of Virginia Beach...

First, Del. Bobby Mathieson (D-21) has accused one of his aides of embezzling campaign money.

Second, Mark Hardman, the challenger for Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney is homeless and unemployed:

If that's truly the reason he was fired, I can't help feeling bad for the guy.

Del. Steve Landes (R-25) makes the teabaggers happy with an unrepentant comparison of the Obama administration to Nazis/Commies (you know, whichever):

I knew that if I was running a campaign, that would happen to me very often. Sad

This won't mean much.  It was a slip of the tongue, nothing more.

If 'f**ck' was all he said, than it's no big deal and has no chance of affecting his campaign to the same level of notoriety as George Allen's 'Macaca'.

In terms of relevancy to a campaign, this event scores a negative two.

Yeah, really. Let's face it, randomly saying "fu ck" is actually pretty cool.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — The National Rifle Association endorsed Republican Bob McDonnell in the Virginia governor's race on Monday — an about-face for the gun rights group, which backed Democrat Creigh Deeds over McDonnell when the two men last faced off in a statewide race four years ago.

Deeds, who had interviewed for the NRA endorsement along with McDonnell, quickly countered by announcing that he had earned the backing of the Virginia Firefighters Association, which represents roughly 6,500 paramedics and firefighters throughout the commonwealth.

But the NRA endorsement is likely the headline-grabber of the day, due to the state's evolving relationship with firearms and the NRA's change-of-heart about the candidate it once supported.

Deeds, a state Senator from rural Bath County and a longtime supporter of gun rights, won the NRA's backing in 2005 when the two men were running for Attorney General. McDonnell won that race by just 323 votes, the narrowest margin of victory ever in a Virginia statewide race.

Apparently the NRA left Deeds off their sample ballot in 2005, and the NRA's CEO did a robocall for McDonnell, so it's not like the endorsement meant anything for Deeds in the first place. Hell, not getting it may help him consolidate support in NoVa.

The NRA is basically a partisan Republican organization at this point, so that's not really surprising.

Sad because the NRA actually has alot of influence in Virginia.  As the election grows near its become pretty clear that Deeds is in trouble because Democrats have been weak on the national level.   There's nothing he can do to win.  The Democrats in Congress and the President have to move on healthcare or some other huge issue or else they will Most likely lose in Virginia and at the local levels of many states.

The NRA endorsed Deeds in 2005. Is Deeds a Republican? No...

epublican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell leads Democrat Creigh Deeds in cash on hand, but Deeds raised more money in the same period, fundraising reports show.

McDonnell raised about $3 million this period, roughly $500,000 less than Deeds, but he boasts a larger bank account. The Republican has $5.8 million available to spend, nearly $1.5 million more than the $4.3 million in Deeds’ coffer.

Today is the deadline for candidates seeking office in 2009 to file financial reports showing how much money they’ve collected and spent in the fundraising period spanning July and August.

The Virginian-Pilot will share those numbers with readers throughout the day as the newspaper receives them.

In the lieutenant governor's race, Democratic challenger Jody Wagner out-raised Republican incumbent Bill Bolling during the reporting period – she collected more than $636,000, while Bolling netted about $546,000 – but the incumbent Republican has a larger stockpile in his campaign war chest.

Those funds have enabled Bolling to go up on the air with television and radio ads that are costly to run but can deliver a significant return on investment by reaching large numbers of voters.

Republican attorney general candidate Ken Cuccinelli, a state senator from Fairfax County, pulled in more than $617,000 this period and has more than $752,000 in the bank. His Democratic opponent, Del. Steve Shannon of Fairfax, took in less -- $534,000 -- but his $1.6 million in the bank is more than twice what Cuccinelli possesses.

The release of fundraising tallies is an eagerly anticipated event for those who intently track political campaigns.

While not necessarily an indication of an election’s outcome, a cash advantage for one candidate can create an impression about the strength of his or her operation and help build momentum in the roughly seven weeks remaining before the Nov. 3 election.

The reports also provide opponents with a glimpse into the campaigns of their foes, and perhaps some information that can be exploited for political gain.
