Progressive Party Convention: May 9th-11th

At the Progressive Convention Senator Glen Taylor is nominated on the first ballot.  He selects Representative Franklin Frazier of Maryland.  (the only Progressive Congressman from there).

Taylor states "Tonight Progressives we need to unite so we can shock the world on Election Day in November.  Let's go forth in this campaign and prove that both the Democrats and Republicans are all just talk.  A Progressive President will get things done for you.  Alright, thanks to all of you and Vote Taylor/Frazier in November."

Ticket: Taylor/Frazier

Back to the primaries.......

West Virginia: May 13th

Republican: 16 delegates
Dewey 40%-6 delegates
Taft 37%--6 delegates
Stassen 23%-4 delegates

VP Dewey decides to stay in the race.

President Landon states "I don't want the Republican Party bitterly divided because that will cause us to lose more ground in November.  We must be a united party."

Oregon: May 16th

Republican: 18 delegates
Stassen 45%-8 delegates
Dewey 32%-6 delegates
Taft 23%-4 delegates

Now theres a little more than 2 weeks until the CA and SD primaries on June 3rd.

Meanwhile, presumptive Democratic nominee, Adlai Stevenson states "I know the Democrats will win this year.  I haven't seen the Republican Party this split in a long time.  I do know however that we will have a lot of dirt on any of these 3 men.  Anyways, I also want to say that we can bring this country back to the way it was under former President Franklin Roosevelt.  Thats why electing one of the 3 Republicans will get you more of the same.  We need change.  Thank you.  Bye."

California Governor Earl Warren campaigns hard for Senator Taft.  (who Warren had endorsed earlier in the year.)

"Senator Taft is a great leader.  He's done alot for the country and continues to do so.  He's a very good and honest man.  Trust Taft for America.  I want to see him as our President and that's why I'm supporting him."

Senator William Knowland (R-CA) endorses Governor Stassen.  Senator Knowland states "I respect Governor Stassen.  He's got so much youth and thats what our party needs right now.  As far as Senator Taft, he's a good person but he won't attract the young voters like Governor Stassen will."

Polls show either one of the 3 men could win California.  There are 70 delegates at stake in CA.

AND THE WINNER IN CALIFORNIA IS...........

Senator Robert Taft

California: June 3rd

Republicans: 70 delegates
Taft 40%-28 delegates
Stassen 31%-22 delegates
Dewey 29%-20 delegates

South Dakota: June 3rd

Republicans: 14 delegates
Stassen 47%-7 delegates
Taft 35%-5 delegates
Dewey 18%-2 delegates

Total delegates for Republicans:
Taft 192 delegates
Stassen 166 delegates
Dewey 154 delegates

Vice President Dewey is going to drop out of the race.  "Americans, I thought I was the choice for the Republicans, at first.  Things just didn't go right for me.  More popular candidates came into the race and I lost the support of most Republicans who went over to the Taft or Stassen camps.  Well, whoever the Republican nominee for President is I will support them."

Who will Dewey endorse?  Find out soon.

Senator Taft states "Republicans, lets come together and win this fall.  We can win if we all stick together and not be divided as we were during the primaries.  Our platform will be fiscal responsibility as well as keeping our promise against the former Roosevelt New Deal.  Lets move forward and show a Taft/Stassen victory on that November night.  Thank you."

Campaign 1952:

Governor Stevenson states "Americans, we must get this do nothing Republican administration out of power.  The Republicans aren't really listening to your problems.  Who was it who helped put Social Security into place?  Who was it that tried to help the unions?  It was the Democratic Party.  The party for all Americans not just the priveledged few."

Senator Robert Taft states "We can't keep spending and spending like the Democrats want to do.  We need to let the people keep their money and do with it as they please.  Government is the problem of our society today.  Under my administration we won't be dealing with that.  We will be a free enterprise government."

Meanwhile, President Landon stumps hard for Taft.  "Senator Taft is a great leader.  He can and he will work hard to bring about the Republican cause.  Thats what we need this fall when we elect a President.  Thank you."

Presidential Debate, 1952:

Moderator: David Brinkley.

Brinkley: Hello Americans and welcome to the 1952 Presidential debate.  Tonight we have with us Governor Adlai Stevenson, Senator Robert Taft, Senator Glen Taylor and Mr. Darlington Hoopes.  Alright, first question, what would you do over the next 4 years as President?  Governor Stevenson go ahead.

Stevenson: Well, first I'd like to thank all my 3 opponents for coming here tonight.  I believe that the government should be more helpful to all Americans than it has been over the past 12 years.  If government doesnt step in then you get what we have now: a mess.

Taft: I'd too like to thank you all for coming.  As far as what I'd do during my administration is stop having government fund all these projects.  If you'd really get down to a government that would give you your money back then vote for me in November.

Taylor: Americans, were at a time here in history where we need assistance.  Neither the Democrats or Republicans are going to give us the right leadership now.  As President I will fight for equal rights for blacks, I will help make Americans have a living wage so they can afford to live.  Neither party is promising this at all.  Remember that.

Hoopes: As the Socialist candidate here tonight, I feel that the government needs to step in to solve all of societys problems.  We still have a lot of people out of work and we need to help them find a job.  Getting people jobs would be one of my first priorities as President.

Brinkely: Thanks.  Next question, how do we deal with Communism in our society?

Note: More of the debate in a bit.  ok??

Taft: I believe that we need to fight Communism.  I'd say we should penalize all who are members of that party here in America.  It can spread very fast and we need to get rid of it.  I believe that Americans feel this way about it as well and that's why I'll be the next President.

Stevenson: Communism is something that can be dealt with peacefully.  We do however need to make sure its at a very low level in membership.  Communism is one of the biggest problems we have here in America at this time.

Taylor: As far as Communism, I believe that we should deal with it more peacefully than the Democrats or the Republicans plan to.  If I was President I would talk with the leader of the Soviet Union and discuss ways to make sure they don't spread it any further.

Hoopes: Now I have this to say about Communism.  The Socialist Party isn't the same as the Communist Party.  We Socialists still believe that Americans should have a right to their property whereas Communists don't.  One way, I propose, to deal with Communism is send peacekeepers over to the Soviets and China to make sure it doesn't spread.

Brinkley: Alright, last question, should there be a higher minimum wage?  Go ahead Senator Taylor.

Taylor: I believe we don't need a minimum wage but a living wage.  Thats the difference between us Progressives and the other 2 main parties.

Taft: Minimum wage isn't in the Constitution.  It's not even equal.  People should be paid as much as they earn during a work day.

Stevenson: We need to make minimum wage higher than it is now.  I'd say we should pass a minimum wage to be $1.25.  That's a reasonable price at this time now.

Hoopes: I believe that we should have a big increase in the federal minimum wage.  People need to be able to afford things.  If its really really low, the poorest of people can't afford a house or whatever else.

Brinkley: Alright Americans.  You've heard it here tonight.  Don't forget to vote on Election Day in November.  Have a great night.  I'm David Brinkley.  Goodnight.  Bye.

Alright.....Election Day is coming up.  Get excited.  ok?

Adlai Stevenson is inaugurated President on January 20, 1953.

"Americans, today we have the chance to bring prosperity to Washington.  Being President will present its challenges but I'm up for that.  One thing we need to realize is getting rid of Communism.  It's an evil that must be stopped now.  We can either do it by force or peacefully.  Either way is fine with me.  Well, God Bless and Thank you."

At that point Congress is working on another Fair Labor Standards Act.  Democrats believe it will pass in both Houses.

Speaker Sam Rayburn brings it up in the House and it passes 250-180.  Then it goes to the Senate where Senate Leader Alben Barkley brings it up.  The Senate vote is 51-42.

President Stevenson signs it into law on February 20, 1953.

In the meantime the government decides to investigate Julius and Ethel Rosenberg (Communists) as their charged with espionage.

On February 24, 1953 Progressive Senator Robert LaFollette Jr dies.  He is mourned and laid in state in Wisconsin's capital.  Governor Rennebohm replaces Robert Jr with his brother, Philip.

The trial begins at the beginning of March.  Their found guilty by the middle of March.  The judge orders them to executed on June 19th for their crimes.

President Stevenson has the chance to give them clemency however he has a tough decision to make and schedules meetings with his advisors.

Senator Robert Taft states "They deserve to be executed for doing what they did.  Their anti-Americans and can't be trusted."  He teams up with Senator McCarthy (R-WI) to pressure President Stevenson to not give the Rosenberg's clemency.

By November Congress is deciding to bring up a bill about Indian Reservations.  Congress states that the reservations should be left up to the states.

Speaker Sam Rayburn schedules a vote for it on November 10th.  The House votes 254-180.  Now its onto the Senate where Majority Leader, Alben Barkley, schedules a vote the following and feels very confident that this will pass.

The final vote in the Senate is 54-42.  It's passed and it sent to President Stevenson where he signs it the next day.

Stevenson states "Americans this is the best option for our Native American community.  I would've liked to have government control but I believe that the states can handle this issue on their own.  I was glad to see some bipartisanship on this bill.  That's always a success when your in politics.  Thank you."

The Democrats look forward to 1954 as they hope they can win more seats in the midterm elections.  Polls show that they have a chance at winning more.  Well...just wait and see.  ok?
