The strike on the refugee camp by the IDF is horrific and unacceptable. Shame on Netanyahu and his ilk.

Atrocities do not justify atrocities.

I don't think a Gantz or Lapid led gov would've done anything differently here.

Under Gantz or Lapid the attack may not have happened, since the main reason it did was because Bibi was using vast resources to protect Haredim and Judeo-Talibanism in the West Bank

Israeli military has a few additional comments on the refugee camp air strike which has caused significant Palestinian civilian casualties.

Quote
The target of Israel’s deadly strike in Jabaliya was a Hamas commander who was actively directing attacks against Israeli targets from a “vast underground tunnel complex,” Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a spokesman for the Israeli military, said in a late-night briefing. He said that in Israel’s estimation, “dozens” of Hamas combatants were killed along with the commander when an underground complex imploded.

Quote
Colonel Conricus attributed the many reports of collateral damage and of civilian casualties to that implosion, adding that the military was waiting for more information before commenting further.

Also, lest anybody doubt that there were a significant number of civilian casualties...

Quote
A Times analysis of satellite imagery and social media videos shows that an airstrike Israel said targeted a senior leader of Hamas on Tuesday had destroyed a densely populated area in the Jabaliya neighborhood, which is home to the largest refugee camp in Gaza.

The medical director of a nearby hospital reported hundreds of injured people and dozens of deaths. The scale of the destruction raises questions about whether the civilian toll is proportionate with the Israeli military’s stated military objectives.

Quote
Videos and images verified by The Times of the strike’s aftermath show civilians, including children, being pulled from the rubble and carried away. Some appear lifeless. “Dead bodies are everywhere,” said Mahmoud Abusalama, a local photographer at the scene who was posting to his Instagram channel. “Everyone is looking for their family.”

A Facebook livestream showed victims from the attack being treated at a nearby hospital. “We have to choose who we treat because we cannot treat everyone,” a doctor says.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2002/jul/23/israel2

If George W. Bush could condemn an Israeli air strike on a Hamas commander in 2002 that killed seven children as a "heavy-handed action that does not contribute to peace" then we should really not even be treating as slightly credible those who will defend a strike that has killed *hundreds* of civilians as acceptable.

Meanwhile Hamas is claiming to have destroyed an Israeli tank in Northern Gaza...

Also they are reporting destroying a bulldozer in the NE part of the strip.

Note that despite the Israeli military blackouts, these are 2/3 areas in Gaza Strip where Israeli armored units reportedly entered in force early on. (The other being in far SE corner of The Strip).

Quote
Hamas’s military arm reported heavy clashes with Israeli ground forces in northern Gaza on Tuesday. The group said an Israeli tank was destroyed in the Zaytoun neighborhood in Gaza City. On the northeastern edge of the strip, it said Hamas fighters attacked ground forces operating with a bulldozer in the village of Beit Hanoun.

I'm beginning to think Netanyahu is going full blood letting in some desperate attempt to regain political capital.

Biden Administration recognizing that US Foreign Policy in the aftermath of the Hamas Terrorist attack on Israeli civilians, and the optics of the Israeli air strikes on Palestinian Civilian Targets, is starting to cause a significant global backlash within the Middle East and beyond.

Quote
In a call with King Abdullah II of Jordan, President Biden continued to push for increased “life-saving humanitarian assistance” for Gaza, the White House said on Tuesday. The tone of the readout — with words like “protecting civilian lives,” “stem violence” and “calm rhetoric” — suggests the White House is increasingly disturbed by the war’s impact on civilians in Gaza.

I believe Carter was the first to call Israel an Apartheid state, sometime in the 2000s.

I believe Carter was the first to call Israel an Apartheid state, sometime in the 2000s.

He specifically considered the situations in the West Bank and Gaza to be apartheid, yes.

Carter definitely was not the first person overall to make the comparison - the Palestinians themselves were making that comparison by the 1970s - but it is absolutely fair to say he was the first person of prominence to refer to it that way in the United States.

Never disrespect the crazy old militant guy down the end of the street with a gun collection.

One day, he could be your saviour. The incredible thing was, there were not enough like him on 7 October 2023.

Israeli Hero Shai Asher

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIrK40UneH0

My ex-wife lived in such a war zone, and she said on the day things go down, men with guns can do one of two things:

(a) the big mouth muscly ones run in the opposite direction and hide crying, and;
(b) the little weird quiet ones become lions and save the day.

She said until the day the enemy is firing bullets at you, you will never know how you will react.

Fight or flight.

Also, no sign of Israel invasion of Gaza. It's an expanded ground operation, almost like Special Military Operation.

Agree. I really think this whole Netanyahu blame game is a little cheap. His options are obviously extremely limited and almost any other Israeli PM would act similarly.

Well we haven't seen a current poster from Brasil around a lot, but could be that he is on my "mute button" for various posts on the RUS invasion and occupation of Ukraine thread.

Still, although we haven't always seen eye to eye, overall BRTD I have come to love and respect you over the years, and suspect that generally we have many more perspectives in common than apart.

Or perhaps not, depending upon your opinion of a certain punk rock zine magazine cover from way back in the dayz...    Wink

Love you Mate (Like my Brother-in-Law whose parents took him from West Belfast Falls Road area to Glasgow during the peak of the Troubles in the late '70s) once told me genuinely and very honestly after a Whiskey and Guinness fueled event with a combo of Celtic Support Club in London plus a three day Paddy Day weekend, even within the heart of the "Belly of the Beast".

I digress... but certainly have taken to the streets to protest massive wars and supporting the Central American Solidarity Movement of the years from High School dayz...

Among the many, many problems with this sort of thing, one of the worst to my mind is the wolf-crying effect that it creates in cases where Israel does pursue genuinely heinous and unacceptable policies.

Channel 4 News

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQkyE7gJJuw

Hamas are going to release more international hostages.

Leader of the UK Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer, has not called for a cease fire, creating a division within his own party.

He said: “While I understand calls for a ceasefire at this stage, I do not believe that it is the correct position now for two reasons. One, because a ceasefire always freezes any conflict in the state where it currently lies. And, as we speak, that would leave Hamas with the infrastructure and the capabilities to carry out the sort of attack we saw on October 7."

Sounds reasonable.

"Israel announced their first solider deaths in the conflict."

In other news, Qatar is now a centre of negotiations for the opening of the Rafah border to get refugees out of Gaza. Egypt and Israel will negotiate their release. More to come.

The border should have been opened on Day 1. Egypt is playing Hamas' game by keeping it closed, but Israel did not fall for Hamas' techniques.

Hezbollah and Yemen Houthi's continued to send missiles and drones towards Israel.

Retired U.S. General Frank Mackenzie talked about the possibility of the expansion of this war in the region.

US forces in Iraq and Syria were attacked at least 27 times between Oct 17-31 (FoxNews.com)

It's simply a matter of time before the US suffers it's first casualty in this scenario.

In other news, Israeli's are buying guns in record numbers.

If the war’s end means Netanyahu’s (and I’m not sure it does - his original coalition partners probably want to remain in charge), then he will try to maintain (at least) an impression of a long war.
Now you get it.

But can the Biden Administration last a long war ?

One of my friends, a news videographer for Voice of America, is currently en route to Gaza. She'll be back on November 19 (or, you know, never). Needless to say, I'm very worried for her.

According to multiple NYT reports and a few other sources there appears to be significant movement at the Rafah border crossing, including a pretty big convoy of aide trucks going into Gaza about 15-20 minutes ago and the passage of civilians, including seriously wounded Palestinians (presumably women and children from pictures) and foreign citizens,

Quote
Video obtained by Reuters shows a caravan of ambulances and aid trucks crossing the Rafah border from Egypt into Gaza.

Quote
Gaza’s authority for border crossings released a list of about 500 names overnight of people who would be allowed through the southern border into Egypt. They include people with passports from Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Finland, Indonesia, Japan and Jordan. Staff members from aid organizations including Doctors Without Borders, the International Committee of the Red Cross and UNRWA are also on the list.

So that's some, relative, good news.

If you refuse to be a human shield for Hamas and stay in Northern Gaza, then they will kill you. IF you stay in Northern Gaza, Israel may kill you. An impossible situation brought about by Hamas whereby civilian casualties are a now caused by Islamic terrorists refusing to let people vacate an active war zone.

Rafah Border Crossing open by Egypt to only 490 international passport holders (foreign citizens) in Gaza. Some confusion exists on who is allowed to leave.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-11-01/australians-in-gaza-told-to-head-to-rafah-border-crossing/103049870

People have been gathering at Rafah Crossing in the hopes it may open to foreign nationals.(Reuters: Ibraheem Abu Mustafa)

"There are 88 Australian citizens, permanent residents and their families known to be trapped in Gaza, which has come under relentless bombardment by the Israeli military since October 7."

Australian Government are urging Australians trapped in the Gaza War to make their way to the Rafah border.

Simply cannot believe Egypt has been able to hold the border shut for this long.
