As it turns out, the Israeli's had already bombed this hospital a few days previously. But of course they wouldn't do such a thing a second time.

https://www.anglicannews.org/news/2023/10/anglican-run-al-ahli-arab-hospital-in-gaza-damaged-by-israeli-rocket-fire-as-conflict-continues.aspx

Not a good day for the credibility of neoconservative propagandists and online intelligence assets spreading naked disinfo.

The horseshoe theory is real especially when it comes to foreign policy

Every time I see this term thrown around, it involves reactions to people expressing their empathy for mistreated, bombed or starving people (yes, even brown people — shocking!) and their opposition to the actors committing those crimes, so it probably says a lot more about the 'centrist' people using that term than it does about the term itself..

Israel didnt commit those crimes

I don’t care whether they committed that particular crime (although the idea that most Western media outlets are biased in favor of Palestine in its coverage of this conflict or that the IDF doesn’t have the superior propaganda machine here is preposterous), they’ve already committed more than enough other disproportionate war crimes which have led to preventable deaths among an already suffering, terrorized (especially by the sound of air raid sirens and strikes) and isolated civilian population without any future. A lot of people on the right are fine with that because we’re talking about brown people and Muslims being bombed here, they just won’t say the quiet part out loud.

I have never said those deaths are not tragic, as they 100% are. The question is , what should Israel about the fact:

- Hamas and the PLO have zero interest in peace at all and just want to drive Israel out.

- Egypt and Jordan refuse to help out one bit. Like if Egypt is willing to incorporate Gaza into their nation, the problem would not be anywhere near as bad

- Iran keeps funding Hamas and Hezbollah

- Israel has tried for peace over and over and been rejected

When is it the fault goes to the people leading Palestinians for Palestinians not having a state and there not being peace and when is it the other nation's in the region's fault for behaving the way they do.

Anyway yes Iraq was a complete disaster but I don't think Israel would handle the occupation of Gaza anywhere near as bad. While I use this example a lot , the reason is our occupation of Germany and Japan after WW2 was a massive success and I think Israel should follow that model rather than a repeat of the occupation of Iraq

It should be noted that there might be reasonable skepticism from a global audience when it comes to Israeli claims of non-responsibility for several recent high profile bombings, when it is clear that there are many other such incidents where Israel did attack civilian targets.

Quote
An airstrike hit a school-turned-shelter in central Gaza on Tuesday, killing at least six people, according to UNRWA, the United Nations agency that administers aid to Palestinians.

Dozens of people were injured, including UNRWA staff members, in the strike on Maghazi refugee camp in Central Gaza, the agency said, adding that the building was severely damaged. At least 4,000 people had been sheltering there.

Video verified by The Times showed people running down a debris-littered staircase inside the school and carrying bodies covered in blood. Screams could be heard in the background. A hole appeared to have been blown through the wall of a classroom on the top floor, and its interior was pockmarked by the blast. A broken classroom chair lay among the rubble strewn across the floor.

Quote
Satellite imagery showed large markings on the roof of the school designating it as a U.N. site. Mr. Lazzarini also said that UNRWA had provided the coordinates of its facilities to “relevant parties” daily. But according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, at least 20 UNRWA schools have been hit by airstrikes since Oct. 7.

On Friday, an UNRWA school in the Nuseirat refugee camp, about three miles from al-Maghazi, was “affected by collateral damage” from a nearby strike, according to the agency. Three displaced people who were taking shelter at the camp were injured, it said.

Israel had instructed civilians to move south of Wadi Gaza, a strip of wetlands that runs east-west through the Gaza Strip. Both of the refugee camps affected by airstrikes are south of that line.

Many Israelis feel a nearly genocidal rage against Palestinians (and that feeling is mutual), so no, the occupation would be handled *much* worse and would be more costly in terms of lives lost, at least in relative terms.

Obviously let's wait for more information, but still worth putting out now:

Quote
A heavy bombardment peppered the area around al-Shifa hospital, Gaza’s largest medical facility, early Saturday local time, according to a doctor there.

Al-Quds hospital, about two miles southwest of al-Shifa, had received an “immediate” evacuation order from “the occupying authorities” — a reference to Israel — at 8 p.m. local time Friday, Nebal Farsakh of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society told The Washington Post.

“Evacuation is not possible,” Farsakh said at the time. “The intensive care unit is full of children, and we cannot disconnect their life support.”

Al-Quds hospital has more than 400 patients and is hosting 12,000 displaced civilians, officials said.

The Israel Defense Forces said in an email that it had sent a request to the residents of the northern area of the Gaza Strip to evacuate southward of Wadi Gaza, but did not confirm a specific evacuation for the al-Quds hospital.

Apparently this is a Hamas command center. And if it wasn't one already, the massive PR success of the disinformation campaign about the previous hospital probably incentivized Hamas to use hospital patients as human shields even more often than they did already.

You make this sound like it would be a small thing. But any annexation of Gaza (without asking its inhabitants?) would be a highly dangerous game for the Egyptian government – and not a simple case of "helping out".

To be honest, it is really tiring to read the ever same fantasies in this thread. Neither will Egypt participate in the administration of the Palestinian Territories nor will any Arab nation accept a significant number of Gazan refugees. They have nothing to gain from making Israel's problem their own. And despite their occasional lip services, they couldn't care less about the fate of the Palestinians.

Nailed it. This is exactly where Blinken needs to get out the cheque-book diplomacy and get Egypt and Jordan to re-assess their short term goals in life.

Boy, all that hand-wringing from the Israeli government about how they just had to stay neutral on Ukraine vs Russia because of Reasons™️ and they can’t even get a condemnation of Hamas from Russia when they need it most. Great geopolitical strategy, Likudniks!  Unamused

Israel has treated Ukraine terribly over the past year and a half. I don't know why Zelensky is still trying to suck up to them.

To get more of their support, maybe? Since Russia is aligning with Palestine.

Cozying up to Israel will make Ukraine toxic to a lot of the more neutral parties. Ukraine is far more popular on the international stage than Israel and I don't understand why he'd try to jeopardize that. Look at how much America's obsequiesness to Israel has hurt us in the middle east.
While this is just anecdotal evidence from the Ukrainians I’ve managed to interact with through various discords and OSINT the general attitude is these “neutral countries” ie Brazil, South Africa, most ME countries are already just pro-Russia and putting on a two-face act so who cares about upsetting them. Also some are holding out hope that doing this also means that Israel will finally send them some Iron Dome missiles

Foreign Nationals might have a brief window to leave Gaza, without potential fears of Israeli Air Strikes...

Quote
The United States sends out an alert that they “received information” that the Rafah border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt will open at 10 a.m.

“If the border is opened, we do not know how long it will remain open for foreign citizens to depart Gaza,” the US Embassy in Jerusalem says.

The embassy warns of a “potentially chaotic and disorderly environment on both sides of the crossing,” and says nationals should assess the situation before moving toward the border or attempting to cross.

Quote
International mediators have been working toward a deal for the opening of the border with Egypt to allow aid into the Strip and for foreigners to exit.

Cargo planes and trucks have been bringing humanitarian aid to Rafah for days, but so far none has been delivered to Gaza which has been under intense Israeli bombardment for almost two weeks since the October 7 attacks, when 2,500 terrorists burst across the border into Israel from the Gaza Strip by land, air and sea, killing some 1,400 people and seizing 200-250 hostages of all ages under the cover of a deluge of thousands of rockets fired at Israeli towns and cities.

Two American Hostages Released By Hamas

https://edition.cnn.com/middleeast/live-news/israel-hamas-war-gaza-news-10-21-23/index.html

The two Americans, Judith Raanan and her 17-year-old daughter Natalie, were out of the Gaza Strip and in the hands of the Israeli military, an army spokesman said (Supplied: Raanan family)

197 to go.

Hamas are saying that they only know about 50 more hostages still alive and said that 20 additional hostages have died in the Israeli bombardment of the Gaza strip.

Well not only does Hamas lie, but PIJ might well be holding 30+ hostages in addition, including perhaps foreign nationals (Non-Israeli or Dual-Citizens).

Not going to delve to deeply into the whole Palestinian Political-Military formation thing, but quite a few splinter groups floating around in Gaza that might have their own interests to exchange hostages for protection.

Hopefully the surviving numbers are significantly larger than those numbers you citied.

It is interesting that as we have seen the body count numbers increase, after the brutal Hamas Terrorist attack against Israeli civilians, the numbers of dead continue to rise, numbers of the missing go down, and the numbers of the hostages stay relatively stable.

Still Qatar is floating around to negotiate hostage exchanges, and it is pretty clear that Biden has warned Israeli not to do a massive invasion and occupation of Gaza at this time, especially with so many foreign nationals lives still at stake.

Israeli Government meanwhile is considering the complete and absolute destruction of Hamas Priority #1, and the liberation of the Israeli Hostages priority #2, while meanwhile the armored convoys continue to mass and build across the border.

Still, good job Biden. We have two American hostages back, but still don't know how many more might be out there bcs of legit gvt cageyness.

US Special Forces teams are already deployed and ready to go, in the event that Biden makes the order to "Swoop In".

Obvious difficulty, is that USA might not have very good intel at all, when it comes to the actual physical locations of US hostages (Not to mention the chance that some American citizens might have been burned to death at the time of Hamas Pogrom against the Kibbutznets).

Foreign Correspondent

Before the War

https://youtu.be/H7fG0FeVc1o

Some very interesting journalism that was put together, mainly concerning the West Bank settlements, before the onset of violence from Hamas.

Keep in mind this story started as a pro-Palestinian story from Australia's most left wing woke media. But regardless, if you take that wokey 'anti-Israel' bias with a grain of salt, it is still a very interesting story on the situation in Israel.

Very interesting video. Nothing justifies what Hamas did but this attack was certainly not unprovoked. The most interesting part was when the former military officer who served in the West Bank said Israel's settler policy could lead to the destruction of Israel itself. I really think a two state solution is the only one that makes sense for Isreali security in the long term. Do they really think they will be able to subjugate a few million Palestinians for perpetuity? Sooner or later the world will wise up to what is actually happening to Palestinians.

Palestinians should be able to get the world on their side by showing the brutality of Israeli settlers and the occupation of the west bank but you can only do that through non-violence. Every time a terrorist blows up a cafe or nightclub in Tel Aviv or commits the sort of brutality we witnessed a couple weeks ago, it sets back any progress towards a two state solution. The world can easily force a two state solution on the Israelis but that can only happen if the Palestinians can stop themselves from committing terror attacks or vowing to keep fighting till every Jew is gone from Israel. Hamas and Likud/far right Israeli political parties really do feed off of each other...

What's the point in seeking revenge on innocent people? I've seen inflammatory videos with calls to "erase" the "animals". Meanwhile settlers and the IDF have killed more than 50 Palestinians in the West Bank during the last week, according to B'Tselem. The worst is yet to come

Israel long wanted to get rid of the Palestinians.

This week’s event just provide Israel with the excuse to do so.

To be fair it is really Likud and its far right brethren who want to do this. The problem for Israeli liberals and moderates is that they don't have a true partner in Palestine to create a two state solution. And while Bibi wants exactly that and propped up Hamas for that reason, we can't just blame him for this. The blame must be laid at the feet of the Palestinians as well.

As NPR points out, America curently has no ambassdors in Israel or Egypt. A situation that has persisted for three and seven months, respectively, and is interpreted as a symptom of political gridlock in the United States:

First trucks carrying aid enter Gaza but besieged enclave desperately needs more

Quote
The first trucks carrying humanitarian aid entered Gaza on Saturday, two weeks after Israel launched a complete siege of the enclave in response to deadly attacks by the Islamist militant group Hamas.

The trucks entered through the Rafah crossing, the only entry point to Gaza not controlled by Israel, as seen by CNN’s team on the Palestinian side of the border. The crossing closed quickly after 20 trucks went through.

People on the Egyptian side of the border – where aid organizations had waited for days to be given the green light – were jubilant as the crossing opened, celebrating with uluations and chants.

The Hamas-controlled Government Media Offices said the trucks were loaded with medicines, medical supplies and a limited quantity of canned food.

However, while these supplies are desperately needed, aid workers say they are a fraction of what’s required for the 2.2 million people crammed into Gaza under a blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt.
