The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin tonight.

Odd déjà vu... it used to be Blue-Yellow colour scheme back in February of 2022.

Democratic Germany didn't have these embarrassing hangups and, unlike the crypto-Nazi West, knew when to stand against colonialism and apartheid.

You mean the East Germany that was eager and willing to invade Czechoslovakia trying to break free of the shackles of the evil Soviet Empire until the Soviet Empire realized the optics of German troops invading Czechoslovakia? That isn't colonialism though as its actually anti imperalism against the evil westoids.

I think Germany's desperation to be known for something other than the Holocaust is cringey indeed, but despite this embarrassing act of virtue signaling on their part, I think referring to the GDR as "Democratic Germany" is even cringier.

East Germany was a one-party dictatorship with sham elections and an all-seeing totalitarian domestic spying apparatus in the Stasi. It literally had to build a massive wall to keep its own subjects from fleeing to greener pastures. Calling it "democratic" is really funny.

Separately, I think the 24 divisions number is misleading. Judea and Samaria have a far larger border with Israel and Israel actually controls the region (and if it didn't, we would probably be seeing this attack also emerge from there), so of course more troops will be located in Judea and Samaria. The question is not why 24 divisions were in Judea and Samaria, but why Israeli troops along the border were taken by surprise and why Hamas was able to make a breach in the first place.
Go to hell.
You have something against using the traditional name for a historic region?

Only if people start calling Israel proper Philistina. (At the time the kingdoms of Judah and Israel were extant in what's now the West Bank they did not contain most of the coast that's now Israel proper, the Philistines did).

Let's not do that. If you want to talk about that time period, I'm happy to chat on the Religion board or the History board.

I get your point, but per the map you've just posted wouldn't all of Israel's population dense areas (Tel Aviv, Haifa, Jerusalem) be in Judah or Israel? Actually, the only major areas in Philistina would be Gaza and Ashdod.

Dude you know as well as I did if you lived in Communist East Germany you'd spend your entire life in a political prison because you got into an "ACTUALLY Marx meant..." argument in a bar. Don't bother defending them.

In more relevant news (which may have already been posted here) Muslims in London and Berlin have publicly celebrated the terrorist attacks. Videos show processions of honking vehicles in London and sweets being handed out in Berlin.

The Bonn regime wasn't the one which fought against actual white supremacists and their lackeys in Angola, sorry.

DSA-NY is planning a rally celebrating the attack in New York tomorrow as well. If two years ago is any indication, it'll spill out and target the Jewish community. I hope Adams is on the ball, unlike De Blasio who actively allowed the NY pogrom to take place mostly unimpeded.

I feel like a lot of the edgelord online foreign policy contrarians, both tankies and fascists, are motivated not insignificantly by a bizarre desire to not do "cringe" things like unashamedly and openly expressing support for things like liberalism and democracy and Western values and the victims of horrible atrocities. Of course, the irony is that this makes them the most cringe people of all, as they unironically stand up for dictatorships and terrorists and the like.

Anyone who's seen The Lives of Others knows better than to consider the DDR "Democratic" in any sense.

This is incredibly sensationalist, inaccurate, and just renders the term entirely pointless but we are clogging this thread. It has more important matters, like Snowstalker's weird DDR apologia.

Very funny that the same guy who posts about how Biden approving 20 extra miles of border wall construction is bad because it runs through wildlife refuges also thinks that East Germany was good.

It seems the second biggest building in Gaza was obliterated this morning. God knows how many died in there or how many were still inside.
The ugliness is just probably just beginning.

The thing which terrifies you most about East Germany is the fact that working people could afford flats, not the mass surveillance or border wall. This is also the scariest thing in 1984 to the average "anti-communist".

The border walls in South Texas run right through important wildlife refuges. Awful stuff.

Actually, I do think mass surveillance and enslaving your entire population with an exit wall are pretty bad.

Also, I'm a big fan of people having access to housing. That's why I support America's capitalist system, which has provided a larger number of sizable single family homes than any other place or system in world history. Unfortunately, East Germany wasn't very good at that, which is why the housing situation wasn't great there.

Quote
In 1990, housing markets in East Germany were widely marked by shortages in supply
and poor quality of the dwellings

https://www.econstor.eu/bitstream/10419/37069/1/618096973.pdf

Perhaps we shouldn't be discussing East Germany in the "crazy thugs murdered hundreds of innocent people" thread though?

The only thing I can think of in NYC history which can be semi-fairly described as a pogrom is the Crown Heights riots of 1993. These did not happen two years ago, or under the De Blasio administration at all.

From Berlin's museum on East German life (a place which is not positive overall on the DDR). Hardly worse than what a million would get you in Manhattan.

But whatever, let's get off this, I just wanted to take a potshot at Euro hypocrites.

Israel is clearly a democracy. That it’s people choose to elect some god awful parties and governments is not an argument against this fact.

If anything, Israel being a democracy is one of the reasons why the Israel-Palestine conflict is so complicated. Israel is famously politically diverse, there's no consensus on what a favourable resolution with the Palestinians looks like. It ranges from resettling the settlers to completely annihilating every last bit of the Palestinian territories, good luck cobbling together an 8-party coalition that can come together on that. The one thing that unites all Israelis is the desire to protect Israel from Hamas, Hezbollah, et al., so the Israeli government under Netanyahu (but even the anti-Bibi bloc and some previous Labor governments) prefer to combat militants rather than try to come up with a peace deal that many moderate Israelis have long since given up on, and the hard-right would absolutely not accept. Tensions remain high even in peace time, and is now resulting in war, which ultimately will not end well for the Palestinian people that Hamas purports to fight for.
