It's obvious to see that Musk is not knowledgeable about people. He may be some sort of genius in his territory -- whatever that is -- but when it comes to living on planet Earth and dealing with people, Musk is a neophyte. A person like this should never be in a position to lead people-oriented activities.

Jeremy Vaught spent 16 years taking the Twitter username "@ music" to over 11 million users.

Now, the "X" platform decides it wants it, gives him "@ Musicfan", and failed to transfer his followers.

For his latest trick, the owner of Xitter is sabotaging the twitter load times of site he doesn't like.

“Free Speech Absolutist” Elon Musk appears to have hit a new low by standing in the way of website traffic flowing from X, formerly known as Twitter, to websites he doesn’t like. The social media app targeted news sites including The New York Times and Reuters as well as competing social media platforms such as Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky by slowing down the load times for links posted on Twitter.

All affected sites take longer to load than other sites such as The Washington Post and USA Today, meaning the slowdown is affecting the targeted sites’ bottom line. A page’s load speed affects an article or site’s search engine rankings, with quickly loading sites appearing higher on Google which prioritizes sites that load in no more than 2.5 seconds.

Those who continue to use X, what is keeping you there and why is it so important that you can't do without it?

I was fascinated by this story for a while, but I have trouble understanding the platform's longevity. It's a dodgy place, it treats its users poorly, and so much of the action has moved elsewhere.

I only use the website and these days it's mostly for viewing "legal Twitter" which has a lot of good stuff. I don't tweet anything so all their dumb new policies don't really affect me. I could do without it but I'd rather not.

Porn, not even joking. There’s a lot of independent gay adult content makers that use twitter to advertise and promote their work, idk where else it could go, maybe back to Tumblr?

If you're using an iPhone, you can get the old Twitter icon back by creating a shortcut with the old logo.

It's a double-blow in that this kind of content creator is getting squeezed on other platforms as well - there's been an exodus from Reddit, for example - and the app stores are a lot tougher about enforcing content rules with new apps than they are with the big legacy social media platforms. Tumblr does seem to be experiencing a resurgence, but I don't know how big it's been. I noticed a lot of this on BlueSky as well, to the point that I stopped using it on account of the main feed being mostly sex performers or far-left comedians.

There are people on X (...or Twitter, as I think basically everyone still calls it) that I read nearly daily and there are communities there whose takes I enjoy; I've also attended real-life Twitter meetup stuff and enjoyed that in the past. I don't really see the community I'm part of there disappearing (maybe yet), so I continue to participate.

I barely post there anymore, but it's a major source of info for my job tracking Russia-Ukraine stuff, and I do have a couple friends on there that I'd lose contact with if I were to leave.

I've intermittenly linked ex-Twitter content that I can't find anywhere else, but I need to stop that habit.

It's really hard to kill an entrenched social media platform through draining their userbase. musk can keep making awful decision after awful decision and twitter will not lose its userbase(AFAIK Tumblr also has a habit of pissing off its user-base with boneheaded decisions, and its still around) IMO if twitter dies, it'll be because musk pissed off most advertisers and failed to find an alternative funding source, or the site breaks and they can't fix it(I heard noises about the latter early on in the musk twitter saga. Don't know if its a realistic possibility now).

Elon has announced that users will no longer have the ability to block other users. They will still be able to restrict dms.

https://variety.com/2023/digital/news/elon-musk-x-twitter-block-feature-delete-1235699759/

I have mixed feelings about this. A lot of people block anyone who disagrees with them, creating their own hive minded safe space which is extremely unhealthy. But at the same time, some people have stalkers, crazy exes etc.

One reasonable way might be to at least just remove the option for blue checks, although granted now that he's rendered a blue check completely meaningless maybe it doesn't matter.

One thing he could do that I would absolutely support though is removing making tweets private. That's the ultimate act of cowardice. Maybe allow temporary deactivations ala Facebook but either everyone should be able to read your feed or no one should.

I use Twitter with a privated account because I am only interested in reading news and analysis and very rarely comment anything myself. Keeping the account private also prevents crypto bot scammers from approaching you, and if blocking is removed, then having a private account will be the only way to control who can write to you.

Also, you need a blue check now to message someone who doesn't  follow you or whom you haven't exchanged messages with before.

I'm fine with private tweets, what I find cowardly is when people turn off responses to everyone unless you follow them. They want to be heard by the masses but only want an echo chamber responding.

The block function was crucial to keeping Twitter functional as a tool for filtering information. The mute button is glitchy and unreliable at keeping undesired content out of feeds.

On the other hand, this is a change that advertisers and promoters will welcome. It's funny how, for all of the controversy, the arc of Musk's Twitter bends toward exactly what every other major platform is doing: Monetizing engagement with no regard for content quality or the well-being of existing users.

I still don't understand how a competent Twitter killer app hasn't been developed yet (Threads just isn't it...at least not yet).

Or is TwiX just too entrenched into society?

I think it just needs to collapse eventually under Musk's mismanagement rather than be "killed" by another app.

But to anyone who thinks tech companies are unbreakable monopolies:

I'm not saying that I disagree. However, MySpace, while popular during it's heyday, was not as entrenched in society as Twitter is. Also, social media in general was less ubiquitous in people's daily lives in the 2000s than it is now.
