If Menendez did step down, who would Murphy appoint?

Since Menendez is NJ’s first Latino Senator, I’d imagine there’s gonna be a lot of pressure on Murphy to appoint a Latino to his seat.
Albio Sires? Though he left to go back to be mayor of west NY.

Reminder: Our Dear Leader once thought he was taking a call from Sen. Menendez when it was really Stuttering John Melendez.

Menendez switching parties and Sinema becoming the Dems' 50th vote to maintain control would be the perfect cosmic horror show for today's political atmosphere.

Maggie Hassan, Ed Markey, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Mazie Hirono joined the chorus. 17/47+3, obviously not counting the senator himself.

Gottheimer is smart to sidle up to Rob. He’s at a weak point but should probably survive (especially with help) and become a valuable ally.

Also this is now public, so perhaps he becomes the north jersey candidate if Menendez drops out:

Also, Warnock and Representative Kuster have now called for a resignation.

I mean it's been no secret that Sherrill was going to run for GOV in 2025.

Senator Bennet is #11, Klobuchar is #12, Mark Kelly #13,

IDK how Menendez survives this, you're going to have the entire caucus soon and probably Schumer then.

well, there’s one way….

Will Menendez switch parties?

That door closed over the weekend, when the leader gave his base marching orders. The GOP just wants him to remain the 2024 nominee, so they can win a shock flip.

All 51 members of the Democratic senate caucus will now resign from their posts because Agent Orange said so.

I don't like to play the age card like many do, but I don't think we need to start a new trend of people starting their Senate careers well into their 70s. Obviously, he'd be far better than Gottheimer (who I'd prefer to see away from any statewide race in NJ), but it seems like a lot adoration (which I share) is directed towards Andy Kim.

I don't really understand a move like that when he has a very strong chance of regaining the Chair of Energy and Commerce. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather be a committee chair in the House than a low-seniority Senator.

I like Pallone, but there cannot be any vote splintering in this primary if Menendez is to be ousted.

Pallone getting in might still leave room a North Jersey candidate lol. I think you have to remember many of these people have worked with Menendez for years and known that he was extremely corrupt the whole time. Basically every politician benefits financially from their office, most probably do so intentionally. I doubt any old machine politician in NJ is disturbed by the contents of the indictment. Maybe Kim is ethical but some don't care about risking Menendez winning another term if it gives them the opportunity to advance their own political careers. Pallone has long wanted to be a Senator, now is his only opportunity.

Updated Senator actions, in descending temporal order:

1. Fetterman
2. Sherrod Brown
3. Welch
4. Baldwin
5. Tester
6. Bob Casey
7. Elizabeth Warren
8. Rosen
9. Heinrich

There's a clear correlation between whose moving first. Also 5 of those came in the last few minutes, so something's happening.

I am now gonna update this list to include everything that happened during the day, including what was already posted.

10. Booker
11. Bennett
12. Klobuchar
13. Mark Kelly
14. Hassan
15. Markey
16. Gillibrand
17. Hirono
18. Warnock
19. Gary Peters

...

20. Sanders (new!)

20/47+3

Gillibrand and now Sanders go further calling for a Senatorial investigation if he doesn't resign.

Also joining the chorus is Representative Morgan McGarvey of Louisville.

Also, Cornyn endorsed the Trump "all should resign ideally" position.

Exactly. If menendez ends up resigning, then sure, go at it. But getting in against Kim while Menendez is still there is just unnecessary.

How would you rate Murphy’s chances in a primary with Kim?
