In a vacuum I would have liked a France win but Messi getting his trophy now after a banger of match is just so wonderfully poetic.

Mbappe has at least another decade in him to get more glory.

Absolutely, especially after being around in 2018 already having not even been in his twenties back then. While I was rooting for Argentinia, I thought Mbappe would also have deserved victory after shooting all three goals that kept France alive until the very end.

Both teams played at top form (from an entertainment POV, anyhow) and the biggest winners from that are us, the viewers.

It was a pretty low quality final - a handful of players on both sides excepted - and generally had the aspect and energy of a particularly deranged play-off final. But that's one of the curious things about football and one of the reasons why it is very popular: an objectively poor quality match can also be highly entertaining and the last half or so of this match (the first was unremittingly dire) would be an excellent example.

The first half of normal time was quite high-quality, thanks to Argentina playing some really good stuff. Minutes 45-80 were indeed pretty dull, but after that of course all hell broke loose - in particular, it was refreshing to see such an action-packed extra time, when it tends to be understandably very cagey and conservative in most major finals.

Btw there has been so many international finals since 2018 that has gone to extra time and even that wasn’t enough.

2018 Olympics : US vs Canada (US wins in Penalties)
2019 Cricket World Cup : England vs NZ(England wins of tiebreaker as super over is tied)
2019 Wimbledon : Federer vs Djokovic(Wins 5th set in a tiebreaker game )
2021 Euro : England vs Italy (Italy wins in Penalties)
2022 World Cup : Argentina Vs France ( Argentina wins in Penalties)

That Wimbledon Final 2019 was massivly frustrating for me as a Federer Supporter.

2022 was the first World Cup I remember in which there was no Wimbledon at the same time

Congratulations, Argentina

Usually, the large majority of the Brazilians is anti-Argentina. Today, Brazil was divided. Miracle Messi can do.

For football to come home it has to already be at home.

Already got sh*tfaced in the AM hours  Angry came back home, took a nap, woke up and still drunk.

Well worth it seeing the goat fulfill his destiny. Vamos Argentina!

Wow wow wow, probably the greatest sporting event I have ever witnessed - and one of the most emotionally exhausting! So happy for Messi to finally get his hands on the World Cup. It’s been an absolute privilege watching him over the years and for it to end like this … well, it always had to be, didn’t it?

It was such an "Argentina 2022" performance too, wasn't it? Dominate most of the match, then somehow get tied in the last 15 minutes. Get back up in ET, but then a bad foul in the box leads to a draw at 120 minutes. Then in the penalties, Emi Martinez goes dark mode and wins it all. A match to remember for generations to come

Does anyone know why President Fernandez was not in Qatar for the Finals?

Idk, but from what I know of Beto Fernandez, he might not have gotten a hero's welcome.

To be fair, that goes for most Argentine presidents.

Because they are English.

Maybe if they had taken the top players from Wales, Scotland, and well forget about Northern Ireland, they're probably a joke, and put them on a team they could have done better.

Why did England never win a World Cup outside its home?

I mean, most countries never win the world cup at all, it's a difficult task. Being at home gives you an advantage.

Uruguay, Italy, Argentina and France also won their first world cup at home - of course, all four of those ended up winning in a different country eventually. Uruguay isn't the powerhouse it used to be (still remarkably competitive for a country of its size), but the other three are just genuinely better footballing nations than England.

I don't need to tell this to a Brazilian of course, but Brazil is kind of an exception in how dominant they've been worldwide, winning five world cups in four different continents - but tragically, choking both times they hosted it.

Wales qualified for the second time ever this year, first since 1958. Northern Ireland has qualified three times, last in 1986. Scotland has qualified eight times, which would be impressive if not for the fact that their last time was 1998 and they haven't made it out of the group stage in any of their 8 attempts.

I doubt a united Team GB would have done any better than England. For all the jokes we make about England, they produce far better players than the other countries of the UK.

First you lose the final and then Macron comes to lecture you, now that's a cruel and unusual punishment.

Macron should resign as President and manage the team himself for Euro 2024.

I extend my congratulations to Argentina. Usually I don't watch much soccer, but had a chance this time around. I'm just glad I didn't prefer a team, so it was less nervous after this specific match. For sure one of the most interesting ones I've ever seen.

That said, I don't really like deciding matches by penalty shots. Always feels that the result more depends on luck than anything else.
