Man who begged 'Please, I can't breathe' dies in Minneapolis police custody

A bystander clip captured outside the Cup Foods store on Chicago Avenue in south Minneapolis starts with the man already on the ground, in handcuffs, and groaning under the weight of a cop's knees on his back and neck.

As the man says and struggles less, a gathered crowd continues asking for mercy, with one man saying the cop pinning the man down using his knees is "bogus." Roughly three minutes into the 10-minute video recording, the man stops moving altogether.

Minutes after the man has stopped moving, the cop continues to apply his body weight. Paramedics arrive, and one checks the man's pulse. The cop with his knees on the man doesn't take his weight off until a stretcher is pulled over. By that point, the black man has not moved in roughly four minutes, and his limp body is dragged and lifted onto the stretcher and then into an ambulance.

That the problem is specialization. We are past the need for specialized law enforcement officers distinguished from their community by virtue of their position (just as we are past the need for most specialization).

What makes that video pretty surreal and all the more horrifying to me is that I'm very familiar with the area it took place in and sometimes pass it coming home from work. I've shopped at that shop it's in front of. And now seeing such a horrifying site there...yech.

Let's see what the investigation reveals. I'm not going to attack the police right now, but if they contributed to his death, it is obviously outrageous and there need to be consequences for those involved and a thorough review of SOP and training.

Why apply severe pressure (weight) to someone neck and upper body. He was going nowhere.

Even if he committed something much worse, Minnesota doesn't have the death penalty, and it certainly doesn't allow police to be judge, jury, and executioner.

It sounds as if this has been recommended for FBI investigation. That's good, but there needs to be a cultural change within policing, especially in regards to training and the types of recruits chosen. We need social work majors, counseling majors, etc.

Anyway, I am disgusted and ashamed of humanity. I can't believe anyone could dehumanize someone to the point that they don't respond to someone literally begging for their life.
