I don’t really see how this can be interpreted as evidence the lockdowns are working.  It’s seems just as likely to me that this is an inevitable consequence of approaching herd immunity, with about 25% of NYC’s population already infected.

If lockdowns worked, this decline would have happened much earlier.

Pandemics die down. People build up immunity, the seasons change, and things change.

Do you literally not understand, or simply refuse to, that the whole point of the lockdown isn't to magically eliminate the virus but to keep the numbers steady so the healthcare system isn't overwhemed?

The goal of the lockdown was to reduce total infections.  That’s what all the models told us would happen. But the models were wrong in many ways.  The models way underestimated the contagion of the virus and overestimated its lethality.  The lockdowns have almost completely failed to turn the spread negative, and by bluntly forcing a one-size-fits-all approach, they have increased the deaths that will result from the virus by failing to better protect the most vulnerable.

I'll have today's final numbers in about three hours, but it looks like a good decline relative to the last Monday.

Someone should do a national poll asking the question: Would you support the current restrictions if you they would lead to a 70% chance of you and your family being infected?

Indeed. The model is... a model... not a calculation of what's actually going to happen or is currently happening. It is a model... of a goal that we need to approximate as much as possible.

Yes, the model does say that.

Correct. That's the point that health experts and health economists would say: 'okay, we did what we needed to do, and we're good to go.'

That's not the point of it at all. First of all, the model predicts that about 70% of the population will end up with COVID-19 at some point, but it does not mean that every individual has a 70% chance of being within that 70%. That's a clear misunderstanding of the data.

The reduced cases/deaths are a result of a normalized bell curve under the healthcare system encumbrance line. Once a health system collapses, the numbers of cases/deaths also skyrocket because that support structure is now gone.

The loss of life and out of control spread that happens once that scenario takes place is a result of the system collapsing more than the projected COVID-19 cases in a vacuum. In other words, those higher numbers also included lives that would have otherwise been saved from COVID-19 and other diseases/conditions as well.

Those nuanced stats are not discussed in public because that kind of detail is usually not necessary to get the point across, but it does generate confusion if people start scrutinizing the model against totals.

I’m stipulating that the state of healthcare systems is good.  Assume no shortage of necessary medical care or equipment.  As for where, if we’re talking about herd immunity, you’d have to assume the infected are pretty evenly spread out around the county.  You can make any assumption you wish about who gets infected and when under our current stay-at-home regime.

For reference, the current IMHE model is estimating that 74,000 will die.

I don't know why you keep talking about herd immunity when we're still not even certain about whether or not someone who's had COVID-19 can be reinfected.

The “flatten the curve” model assumes that people have immunity once they recover as well.  Otherwise, how do you explain either of the curves in the “flatten the curve” figure ever declining?

I'm uncertain about this one. PQG might have an answer here.

Reopening schools should be much more of a priority that returning to work right now.

Seems like simply more evidence, along with climate change denial, that people really don’t care very much about the welfare of future generations.

This country stopped caring about that about 30 years ago.

Here come the fun police.

I don't think it would be much fun for those people at the beaches, their family members or other random people they pass the virus onto to be hooked up on ventilators.

What new evidence do we have today that we didn’t have last week (or six weeks ago) suggesting that closing parks and beaches will reduce serious virus cases? 

If anything, the new evidence from studies in the past week or two indicate that outdoor transmission is NOT a significant source of infection (on top of all the evidence that has accumulated suggesting the lockdowns in general are a failure).

Wow, I wasted a lot of effort explaining the whole thing about stay at home orders to you so that you would acknowledge it and then turn around the next day and say the same thing here in bold again. Noted.

I hope that others benefited from the exchange at least.

For the fourth day in a row, New York is not the state reporting the most deaths. For three of the past four days, it has been surpassed by New Jersey. (New York was surpassed by Pennsylvania but not New Jersey on April 29.)

This is of course good news for New York, which dropped below 300 deaths a day (to 289) for the first time since March 30 today, down more than half from its peak of 799 deaths on April 9. But not good at all for New Jersey. Also a bad sign for the rest of the country as deaths nationwide are up since April 9 despite the dramatic fall in New York. To put it in perspective, deaths in New York made up not too far short of half of deaths nationwide on April 9 but less than a sixth yesterday, and probably even lower today once we get updates from every state. This is less and less a New York crisis and more and more a national crisis.

Note that sometimes the numbers are updated at around 6PM EST, so let's wait for the final numbers for today. But yes, good news if this is the case.

I read that New York reported 1,600 deaths in nursing homes that were previously unreported. I wonder if that accounts for today's jump.
