Of the 3 I've been to, I can't say I have much preference, though I'd probably choose to live in NYC. This is going to be so obviously biased.

It’s almost like ranking cities should have very little to do with politics!

It raises a good question for the OP. Why DC?

NYC, LA, and Chicago are the three largest cities and none of them are capitals. Houston is number 4 and not a capital, but DC is number 20 and it's a capital as well. There are a whole lot of other significant cities overlooked to get down to DC.

Perhaps historic and cultural significance, but still other cities come to mind before Washington.

Being the national capital counts for something.  Washington is one of the most influential global cities in the US.

And the size of the Washington-Baltimore urban area is larger.

DFW and Houston both have larger metros than DC. Baltimore is usually considered its own metro (especially when I talk to residents of that city). As a global city DC is usually ahead of Houston, but in the same category as San Fran and sometimes Miami.

I almost included San Francisco in the poll.  Maybe I should have.

That's the secret of US cities. There are the big three, which appear at the top of all the lists like the ones noted. After that there is a bunch of second tier cities that leap frog each other depending on the list.
