Trump's approval is falling right now because he didn't properly honour McCain, even after his death.

Americans don't like such tasteless behaviour ...

They can't mind it that much considering they elected him to begin with.

Many Americans exemplify tasteless behavior whether in watching horrible television or owning McMansions. Maybe  Donald Trump's public displays of vulgarity helped connect him to a certain part of the electorate, people who get derided for lawn ornaments or being fans of 'professional' wrestling.

But (1) there are limits, and (2) sophisticated people typically have some limits on what they accept. Rude confrontations such as showing the middle finger or shouting "F--- you!" are ugly.

We now see a pattern of deficiency of character in this President. It has gone past "liberals" and well into the 'conservative" realm.

Suburbs supported the GOP because of its fiscal conservatism and small government, low taxes agenda. Then the suburbs began to slip away when Newt came around and introduced Evangelicalism into the party’s rhetoric. Now more suburbs fled the GOP as they got into the culture wars. These suburbanites welcome immigration, they are tolerant of the LGBTQ community, support feminism and empathize with the struggles black people face. The GOP is being defined under Trump as a party of reactionaries, appealing to the alt right and the InfoWars crowd. It’s driving the suburbs away from them at lightspeed.

Not true. The American people did not elect Trump. The electoral college and the first past the post electoral system more generally did.

To simplify-

He got in with 46% of the vote. That's about where he started on election day. After the "let's give him a chance" ended and the cancellation of the ACA was actively being considered, he went down to 42%. Then he got a Syria bump to like 44% and ACA cancellation was stalled and he went down to 40%. The Charolettsvile got him down to 38% and then the stalled tax plan got him down to 36%. When they reached an agreement, he got a bump to 40% because free money, right? Then it focused people on the economy and then there was the Olympics and trying to make friends with Kim. That got him back to 43%. Then the entire Manofraud thing got him back down to 40%. Am I wrong? Are we caught up?

What’s the double standard exactly?

I’m sorry, but if Obama said even a handful of the things Trump has said I wouldn’t like him either.  If anyone said POWs aren’t war heroes, that is immediately disqualifing, or it should be.

Exactly.  Trump gets criticized more because he says and does things that are much worse than any other recent President.  If there's a double standard here, it's that Trump supporters consider his behavior acceptable.

It's the same way with all the negative news about Trump.  He's exactly right that most of his coverage is negative -- but that's because he does so many negative things!  If Obama or Bush had done the same things, they would have gotten equally negative coverage.

This is a time of abnormal politics by the standard of any time in American history. We elected a demagogue who holds much in our political heritage, some of it basic to the system, in contempt. We now see the results.

Surely you notice that I watch the state polls. Those reflect how people see the President . Those can give the full measure of how people see him based on where people are. So far Donald Trump has not only had  low approval levels for this time in his first term as Presidency; he has thoroughly awful ratings of disapproval. Because there is yet no diplomatic or military disaster or economic collapse the President's ratings have been remarkably stable.

What the President does is often sick. He still has some support. Maybe people like his militaristic bluster, his scapegoating, his bad treatment of women, and his despotic style of management. Some people love to hear the President stick it to people who hold liberal and humanistic values.

A fall in values for Donald Trump indicates that either something has gone wrong or that he has offended more people.  President Bone Spurs can deride an American who put Country First (his 2008 campaign slogan) while under the brutal custody of the commies in North Vietnam, where the KGB made frequent visits as consultants on pressuring Americans to break.

Behaviors that self-righteous, moralizing liberals saw as extremely hazardous are now showing consequences. If you contrast what the Hard Right offered as predictions about the behavior of Barack Obama in 2008 ("He pals with terrorists" as said Sarah Palin in her mangled diction) we find that much of it proved untrue. What we liberals said of Donald Trump as a person has proved true. If anything we didn't fully express how awful he would be.

A significant part of the Trump appeal is anti-intellectualism which exploits the contempt that some exploited, hard-working people with little formal education have for people who seem to not work as hard and to be happier. No, we are simply more learned in philosophy, psychology, science, mathematics, economics, history, and even business. We can see the Trump campaign as a disreputable hustle.

The results are coming in, and Trump is awful. So say the polls.

Even a handful? How about just one of the things. I mean, if Obama had said that McCain wasn't a war hero and that people only liked him because he was captured, they would STILL be talking about it on Foxnews 24/7. And I'm not even exaggerating.

WP: How big is the GOP’s Trump-can-shoot-a-guy-on-Fifth-Avenue caucus?

TL;DR: 12% to 20% of Americans.

In 1924, there were 290000000 voters and
4 million of them were in the Klan. This figure also coincides with a literal interpretation of Hillary's "Basket of Deplorables" hot take.

You've got an extra zero in there.  There were about 29 million votes in the 1924 election, not 290 million (the U.S. population was only a little over 100 million at that time).

Throw another log on the fire:

PPP, August 27-28, 572 registered voters (change from last month)

(Before the usual anti-PPP crowd comes out, please note that PPP has generally been one of the better pollsters for Trump.)

Approve 41 (-2)
Disapprove 56 (+4)

The approval numbers among Democrats and Republicans are almost mirror images, but Trump is losing Independents badly, which is driving the topline numbers:

D: 15/84
R: 85/15 81/15
I: 36/62

And an unusual reverse gender gap in this one:

Women: 43/55
Men: 39/58

Another interesting question:

"Do you believe that a President who breaks the law or obstructs an investigation should be indicted while in office, or not?"

Overall: Yes 68 / No 21
D: 88/6
R: 39/36
I: 71/24

Looks like Republicans outnumber Democrats in this poll since both numbers are mirrored and his overall approval is higher than it is with Independents. Probably Trump is even (a little) further down and the ABC poll wasn't such an outlier.

Independent approval rating was 44/42 in July. That's a dramatic drop in support.
