The vast majority of monuments are depicting their leaders, and not the sheep the leaders employed (and fooled) to fight for them. Their leaders were intelligent (and rich) and knew exactly what their true cause was (and not "State's rights" bulls**t).

Even though I don't condone the language used by ProudModerate2, much of what he describes about the reasons for why the South seceded is accurate. Many of the Southern state governments (i.e. South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Georgia, Mississippi) made it clear that they were motivated to act, in whole or in part, by the "threat" which they perceived slavery was under due to the election of Abraham Lincoln. And it cannot be denied that slavery was the major cause of the severe tensions between the North and the South in the decades prior to the Civil War, and that it was the chief issue that complicated the acquisition and development of the western territories.

You are correct in saying that many Southerners thought they were defending their way of life. It cannot also be ignored that most Southerners, including the majority of Confederate soldiers, did not own slaves. But the role of slavery in the South's resistance shouldn't be underestimated, and poor whites were afraid that if the slaves were freed, it would undermine them. They were just as racist towards blacks as actual slaveholders; why else did the lynchings and harassment of the Reconstruction period occur? Or the fights over segregation?
