Sigh. Again, another school shooting. Thoughts and prayers don't go far enough. Taking away people's rights under the Constitution goes too far. It's time to address the 800 pound gorilla in the room -- namely, mental illness.
No. That's not the issue at hand and using it as a goddamn cop out is feckless.

Mental problems are a giant issue, there are two 800 pound gorillas in the room.
Yes, mental illness is a major issue. But this is a complete distraction when it comes to mass shootings. This is like trying to fix a broken pipe by saying we should really be worried about the water bill.

You're trying to shove the one that just killed sixteen kids behind the other one to hide it. Please stop.

It looks like the weapon is an AR-15 weapon again. At one point people need to understand that civilians mentally ill or not should not own military grade weapons.

A Trumptard....looks like the bloods on Trump but it's honesty on the GOP for not passing gun control after Sandy Hook.

Now MSNBC is lamenting the lack of metal detectors in the schools. I've been to Coral Springs High, the neighboring school, when my brother briefly attended it. That school is a literal fortress. It was more strident than airport security. We went through a metal detector, we went through a checkpoint where my mom's purse was checked, and we had to sign in behind a very thick glass window (bulletproof?). There is nothing more we can do, besides banning guns (which I've argued won't work a billion times now in the seven years here), that would stop this.

Face it, people are somehow getting crazier.

I know, especially because guns aren't even the problem. What's gonna happen in the 2030s when guns are outlawed and people are falling victim to Chinese style knife sprees and refugee car attacks?

You can’t kill 17 people at once with a knife.

Goes without saying that this is a horrible tragedy, and as much as I know it's insensitive to be "that guy", let's just wait and see how many "thoughts and prayers" tweets and statements go out. It hasn't worked before, but maybe this time it will.

Let's face it: this nation views school shootings as a regular part of our zeitgeist. Nothing concrete has been done (and I'm not talking about just gun control here) to at least try and stop these types of massacres from happening, therefore we are all complicit in the murders of these kids. It is quite literally the price we have agreed to pay for the right to own guns...a right that many of us choose not to even exercise. This is not me saying "ban guns" because I personally don't think that's the solution (or if it's even a solution) yet how much longer can we pretend that these shootings are "tragic" without actually trying to prevent them?

We're all complicit. No one wants to try solutions, conservatives, liberals, progressives, what have you. After Sandy Hook, I accepted that if we did not rally together immediately to try and find some kind of solution, we never would. And we haven't.

I appreciate the sentiment but any policy has potential downsides, so if we try something we should have some sense that it might actually work.

To clear up something: There have only been 8 school shootings this year, that actually resulted in injury to someone other than the perpetrator. The 18 statistic includes any instances of a gun fired on school property, and includes 2 suicides and a few false firings (including one with a pellet gun).

Florida

And he's 19. With the money, he could've walked into any gun store in America.

People forgot about that school shooting in Kentucky very quickly. We only seem to care when the death toll is really high.

Spoke too soon. The death toll is definitely big enough here.

I appreciate the sentiment but any policy has potential downsides, so if we try something we should have some sense that it might actually work.

The problem is that no dialogue is happening whatsoever to even figure out where to go next. Half of us are tweeting "thoughts and prayers" and the other half are tweeting "something should be done". That's not a solution, but it's where the discourse goes to die. There will not be any concrete solution or even so much as a discussion to come out of this.

The answer is a big fat NO. Sorry your poor ears hate hearing the truth of how basically all of the GOP is bought by terrorists like the NRA.
