If a non-divided government can't keep its own government open, then clearly change needs to be made at the top.  I don't see why partisan Democrats wouldn't want a shutdown at this point, especially if Dreamers end up getting something out of it in a final deal.

Heads, I win.  Tails, you lose.  Am I doing it right, krazen?

Both. the public square is largely a fail these days. It needs healing from the bottom up, by whatever remaining mature concerned adults are still out there.

Ummm...no.

This is 100% on the GOP.   They have majority in both chambers and the White House.    The Democrats can't do crap unless the GOP can't get their sh!t together.

To blame the Democrats for any of this is utterly retarded.

yes.

The GOP was wrong for their role in the shutdown during the Obama years.

The Democrats will be to blame for this one.  As the Dreamers are not American citizens, it is unconscionable that the Democrats would allow a government shutdown on their behalf.

Ah, yes, that is just the way to let immigrants feel like they're not 2nd grade subhumans Smiley

On the one hand, the shutdown is probably only possible because of a Democratic Senate fillibuster. On the other hand, this wouldn't be happening if Trump didn't shut down the DACA deal or if the GOP-led congress actually passed a budget ever. So for me, blame falls onto both sides, but more to the GOP.

The Dreamers might as well be American citizens. The only things standing in their way are the inhumane, anti-family, racist, and above all, utterly cruel immigration laws and the power-tripping authoritarians whose sole purpose in life is to enforce those barbaric man-made laws against people who are merely demanding their most basic rights.

For what it’s worth, all of these obstacles are very anti-Gospel (the Good News that is very clearly brought first and foremost on behalf of the poor and powerless - it’s in a big book but the name escapes me at the moment). Something to think about.

If the Republicans will be blamed for this shutdown, why are the most vulnerable democrats announcing that they'll vote for the CR?

Because even if Republicans are blamed overall, Democrats will probably still be blamed in West Virginia and North Dakota. Not that it will make a difference either way in November anyway.

Donald Trump. His fat ass is supposed to be a deal maker and is doing nothing to get Democrat votes.

It isn't just dreamers with those basic rights.

Most adult "illegals" DO have human rights to immigrate to America. I have a hard time seeing why the government is justified in demanding a piece of paper to millions of non-criminal people.

I didn't see this until just now (via AAD) but

New @ABC/@washingtonpost poll suggests more Americans would blame President Trump and Republicans than Democrats if the government shuts down tonight.

CNN poll also has more people blaming Republicans:

No doubt Democrats made a good call here politically.

The Democrats. DACA is irrelevant to the budget and government shutdowns over things that are either irrelevant or trivially relevant to budgetary concerns aren't sound grounds for a budgetary standoff.

Edit: Also Republicans who voted against the CR. To a lesser extent Trump and the rest of the GOP for trying to insert increases in defense spending.

This is terrible terrible politics by Schumer. Democrats should NOT be the party of obstruction and government shutdowns, that should solely be the republicans. I'm convinced that this hurts democrats, it is too easy to sell the message that the dems are being obstructionist and cares more about illegal aliens than keeping the government working. Guess who cares about a government shutdown? Public servants, democrats and moderates. The ones the democrats need to be excited about them. Guess who doesn't care? Libertarians, tea-party people and rural states-rights people.

Bottom line: Democrats have BY FAR the most to lose of the two parties when it comes to government shutdowns and should absolutely not be seen as the ones forcing it.
