DOJ can't prosecute a sitting President. Legal opinions to the contrary are not in the mainstream. (states probably could, though) Congress would need to impeach and convict him, which isn't going to happen.

If he were to fire Mueller, there are almost certainly some state level DAs who could prosecute under state law, where his pardoning power doesn't apply... and pardoning yourself goes so far beyond any constitutional norms that the Supreme Court would likely rule it invalid.

Ah, I forgot about the possibility of state charges. That's pretty intriguing.

It's never been tried before. We'd go into uncharted territory.

Kushner is next, likely got him in to discuss Flynn and caught him in a million lies when Flynn was already singing and Mueller had him dead to rights.

He sang like a bird. Trump is going down.

I doubt it. Trump can easily just fire Mueller at any time. And even if he doesn't, there will never be 2/3 of the Senate that votes to convict, even if Dems win the House and impeach him.

Don't be so sure of that; the Senate GOP could easily turn on him.

I'll believe it when I see it. All but a small handful have tied themselves to the Trump train and have become his sycophants. And it would ensure the end of their political careers, since there's no way in hell they'd win a primary anywhere after voting to convict Trump.

Let's hope that Trump shuffles all of his Senate lap dogs (Sessions, Cotton, etc.) in and out of his cabinet and all the sycophants are gone.

It depends on what the charges are but I could see 20 or so Republicans jumping ship and voting to impeach in the right circumstances. Maybe the only overarching thing that would stop them would be the fact that having people on record voting to impeach a Republican would create a civil war within the party and probably destroy the party from the inside.

Mueller has been in contact with New York AG Eric Schneiderman through almost the entire process.

To make sure Trump can't pardon any offenders. If charged with a federal crime, he can pardon. If charged with both federal and state, they would still be on the hook.

And if Trump is allowed to stay in office with overwhelming evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors, it could well create a US wide civil war.

I think we might get a situation like what happened with Nixon in 1974; if it became obvious that Trump might lose a trial in the Senate, then the GOP congressional leadership would persuade him to resign or the 25th Amendment would be invoked.

Nah. I'm not even sure Susan Collins would vote to remove him. Any Republican who does vote for removal would lose their next primary in a rout. Though since that will be happening to Collins regardless, why not?

Or they would get Pence who would just as likely approve their agenda. If this gets even dirtier, expect GOP reps and senators to flip. It could just as easily backfire on them if they don't support impeachment especially in the midterms.

I'm pretty sure the only Republican Senator that could vote to convict Trump and still survive a primary would be Mitt Romney.
