Because several incumbent democrats have lost in the past 4 election cycles (Yes Robert Byrd and Jay Rockefeller won reelection several times but that was when West Virginia was very much a blue state downballot). You could ask Nick Rahall how his 38 years in office helped him against Jenkins

What I think also needs to be factored in is how much of a penalty WV Democrats were paying for trying to win elections in that state under Obama. Trump is really popular in WV, but that popularity still deprives Republicans of the electoral whiplash they were giving Democrats that only comes with an unpopular Democratic president.

"Politicians are runnin a lot of crazy ads. They blew up the coal mine. And put me in prison. Now they're running ads saying that the coal mine blew up, and I went to prison. There's no surprise there. But if you want jobs, if you want to end the drug epidemic, and you want to protect the unborn, you need to vote for me. One of my goals as US senator will be to ditch Cocaine Mitch. When you vote for me you're voting for the sake of the kids."

Other than the Chinaperson mess, I was surprised at how calm and collected Blankenship was when compared to the back and forth screeching of Morissey and Jenkins. If I were a Republican not worried about winning the race, I would vote for Blankenship.
