I would love a state named Jefferson.

One rich guy supporting it does not a viable plan make.

Most of this is just the rich trying to separate itself from the poor and inland conservatives from the liberal coast.

Sore loser syndrome.

I'd support this in theory, but the splits are so idiotic that I'd campaign vigorously against it.

I'd like it...Democrats would likely gain at least a couple seats in the Senate, and maybe more.

Silicon Valley would be a stupid name for a state.

Because California has become completely ungovernable, he's bankrolling a ballot proposition to break the state up.

Silicon Valley would be a stupid name for a state.

Especially since it includes a whole bunch of land that isn't silicon valley.  The other four names show a lack of creativity.

Well, we'd get ten new senators, so 110 senators.  (Assume 8 of the 12 would be Democrat and 4 would be Republican if you want.)  110 Senators and 435 house seats + DC makes it 548.  Split that 548 up by census and do all the little rounding--estimate it by the population of the counties in the new states--and come up with number of electoral votes for each of the six states.  That should give you the answer, assuming you know which, if any, of the states would go winner take all.  That's another kink.  Some may do it like Nebraska.

There's a better chance of D.C. becoming a state while the Republicans control the House.

Wouldn't even help the GOP that much.  All I can see them carrying are Jefferson and Central California in maybe a good year.

What is the logic behind the Jefferson/Northern California split? I've always known the upper North has wanted to secede because it feels silenced by the Bay Area liberals, but it would probably still be a GOP state if those two merged.

The area marked as Jefferson would be the population of Montana.  Totally ridiculous.

Also the names are poor.

North as Jefferson is fine, Central California should be called Sierra, Silicon Valley should be Northern California and then West/South should be merged, since there's very literally different culturally about them and be Southern California.

More likely than not it's the same thing as a gerrymander, only taken to the extreme.  It's just a very, very bad gerrymander for a really, really stupid idea.

Yeah; Democrats would need a wave to carry Jefferson:

2012
49/46 Romney
51/49 Emken

2010
53/39 Fiorina
49/44 Whitman

2008
49/48 Obama

If this weren't a political power grab and a serious attempt to make California a better state government, a better solution would be to do a new constitution and turn it into a commonwealth of sorts.  So, a bill to pass the legislature would have to go through not a House and Senate, but a Northern House and Southern House.  There would only be 2 Senators to answer to Washington, but the internals of the state would function as its own nation.

It does! Rummy has been using it on an international scale as well, which will appear later when Drew updates it again (not for a long, long time, sadly).

I know I can't wait! The Fear and Loathing series in general is possibly my favorite timeline ever written.

These are spectacularly poor boundaries, of course; "North California" stands out in particular as not making any sense.

'advances' is a very relative concept
