There's way too much hate for both Chicago and downstate in this thread. A few years ago, my family had to drive several hours in an incredible snowstorm to make it to a funeral. Absolutely amazing scenery. Wish I had an excuse (though not a funeral) to repeat that, but only with me in the driver's seat. And Springfield, my dad's hometown of sorts, isn't bad. Hit up the Cozy Dog while you're there.

People who hate Chicago should be forced to live in St. Louis.

FS, Chicago is awesome and an endless number of cool films have been set there.  Plus, Illinois has the funniest named town ever--Effingham--sounds like your cussing at pork.  Also, the drive north out of Alton (St. Louis) upriver is as scenic as anything in Wisconsin.

I guess that Illinois-style misnamed tomato casserole is a better foodstuff than Provel "cheese" on a cracker.

Anyway, FS for being the inspiration for the best pop music album of my lifetime.

Too much dang sauce for my taste.  Plus, try eating it the normal way without getting messy.  Pizza is to be eaten with one's hands, I say!  No fork required.

Blasphemy! The sauce is the best part of a pizza!

That would be the bread, my good man.

And I've been to a restaurant that served pizza like the type Stewart showed for Chicago, and a fork wasn't necessary.

Hah, funny.  I'm from St. Louis and yes, I do dislike Chicago.  We simply went to NYC for holidays.  I mean why go to Chicago?  I tried it twice and was like 'why the heck didn't we just go to NYC?'

No, my we have a lot of those in St Louis as well.  It was that it didn't seem properly different.  Too Midwestern.  If we were to budge, we wanted to budge for something really exotic.

I was about to vote HS out of a general dislike of the state, but Mecha made a good point on the alcohol laws, so now I'm undecided, but lean HS.

HS with Chicago, FS without.

(Yes, I know that technically would have bad consequences not only for my party, but for the economy of downstate IL.)

There is almost nothing to do in Illinois outside of Chicago.

You can't be serious, right?

Anyway, Freedom State.  It could use a few more hills and a higher speed limit on the Interstates, but other than that it seems to be a pretty great state.

Oh, and while I"m at it, did I mention the state's amazingly FF Liquor laws?

Speed limit is going up soon actually.

Why do folks hate Chicago so much?

And there are some cool parts of downstate (see Champaign-Urbana).

People from Chicago tend to have a rather stuck up attitude.  My university is about 50% local, 50% people from Chicago or the suburbs.  The people from Chicago complain endlessly about here not being Chicago, to the point where we wonder why they didn't just stay there then Tongue

People who hate Chicago should be forced to live in St. Louis.

I like St. Louis.  At least the Cardinals can actually win a game Wink

I cannot believe you people don't like Chicago style pizza. How anyone can dislike any type of pizza that is made without literal feces is beyond me. You are all horrible.

Chicago-style pizza looks like a pie or a quiche. Definitely not the kind of pizza I can smash loads of slices of in the one sitting I imagine. Want to try it though.

St. Louis isn't similar to Chicago at all. Wealth and poverty in St Louis are concentrated right next to one another, sometimes alternating block by block, whereas in Chicago you have to go out of your way to get to the poor areas from the rich areas. Chicago also has better urban planning, actual public transportation, a way better music scene, and culture beyond drinking sh**tty beer and circlejerking to the Cardinals. They're basically 4 neighborhoods worth hanging out in STL and all essentially have the same feeling. Chicago is far more diverse; the culture of Hyde Park (University of Chicago) is completely different than the culture of Lincoln Park (DePaul University).

I have no idea how Chicago-style pizza tastes, but it definitely is NOT pizza. As an Italian, I am the only one so far who can judge on this subject.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Chicago. The flat as a pancake corn fields are dreary however. I drove all the way from Chicago to Peoria, before I realized that I missed my turnoff just outside Chicago from the I-55 to the I-80 to head to Iowa, as opposed to St. Louis. The landscape looked just the same to me.
