This doesn't count NJ or CA where I only spent a little bit of time in due to travel and didn't actually see any of the state.

Red = I've resided or stayed in for more than a day
Blue = I've visited
Green = Transit only

LA: Former home state -- left ten years ago and never returned. High school field trip to the Stennis Space Center in MS.

DC: National competition when I was a child. We visited NIST in Gaithersburg MD.

OH: Graduate visitation weekend at Ohio State. GA and TN were airport layovers.

TX: Grad/postgrad school and current state -- saw far more of TX than I ever did of LA.

MI: Physics conference at WMU. Chicago, Ann Arbor, and Detroit (ugh) were day trips. IN was a drive-through.

A clear pattern has emerged: I don't travel except for professional purposes.

Red states yes. Blue states, no, although I must have flown over Alabama and maybe flew over Kansas. I went to Cody WY from Philly in 1977 and may have been through MN and NE. Probaly drove through IA on that trip. I lived in Colorado until 1960 and therefore probably flew over KA.

I have not flown over any of the other blue states.
I have a ticket for NV in June.

I don't care too much about RI and AL, not against them, just have no strong desire to go there. I wouldn't mind going to AK, but I may never get there.  I don't know if I will get to the other blue states but I certainly would like to.

I keep track of my US travel at the county level. Red for residences. Dark blue for overnight stay. Light blue for intentional destinations. Green for drive through (including meal stops). Yellow for airport only.

Cool map. Any hope to go to OR, HI or AK?

Puerto Rico may be a state some day. I'd like to go there, but have not.
Have any of you been and if not would you like to go there?

That is my hope. OR was in my travel plans for summer earlier this year, but now it looks like I'll travel to FL instead.

IIRC it was at the Hampton Inn in Washington on a drive home from the East Coast.

Red = been to as final destination
Green = stayed over, but only on the way somewhere else
Gray = been through but have not stayed over

AZ I stayed over but was too young to remember

In June, I will add NM as red and MN as gray (airport only)

The red states. I don't consider spending an hour in an airport terminal to be a "visit" or else New Jersey and North Carolina would be shaded too.

But airports should count in a similar way that driving through does, particularly driving through a state but not stopping as many do on I-70 through Wheeling WV, or I-95 through Wilmington DE.

This includes using airports in a state for a layover as a visit.

Blue - States in which I have resided (MS and DC)
Red - States in which I have stayed the nights
Green - States to which I have been, but have never spent the night
Grey - State I have not been to

I'm not very well traveled I must admit...

What states have you been to?

Driving through counts, but a layover doesn't.

I really need to get to New England.

Well then, I've been to all six Australian states, plus the ACT.

But if you also meant American states, then:

I'm more of a county tracker.

Red: residence; blue: overnight stay; cyan: destination stop; green: drive through (incl. gas and meal stops).
