Pretty self-explanatory.

I selected "no" because even though sometimes I do think I would like to have kids, I realize that I want them for the wrong reason.  I would want raise my kids in order to groom them in order to be successful and popular, but only to the extent that it would look good on me (i.e., "trophy kids").  Also, I don't want children to get in the way of any occupational ambitions that I may possess.

However, most importantly, kids are just really friggin' expensive!  I could live a much more epicurean lifestyle if I didn't have to take care of anyone besides my wife and I.  You don't see very many "daddies" running around in sports cars, going on exotic vacations, or having the nicest watches...

Yes. I have to keep continue my bloodline and family name.

Yeah, this is always a good counter-argument.  But I've been lead to the conclusion that in today's world, where people are less tied to a specific geographic place than they were in previous centuries, the importance of having viable heirs is diminishing.  What's the point of having kids to pass on the house, land, etc. when it is very likely that they won't even live in the same state as you do?  Do you think they will come back to your hometown to manage your estate?  When you die, your kids will just sell your stuff anyway to provide better for their own families...

It is.  But you worry, it costs a fortune, and there's days you wish you could retire from having the title "Dad" or "Mom", I suppose.  But yes, it's quite an awesome experience.

Well, I personally liked the one from yesterday better. Smiley

But anyway, yeah I'd like to have kids maybe in 20 years or so.

A bit late for me, but for the first time in my life, putting aside my vintage, I am ambivalent rather than negative about the prospect of siring issue. That is because I have had the opportunity to interact with my roommate's kids to a fair extent over the last 18 months. I enjoyed pondering and trying out different tactics with them, to induce them to want to do things my way, without contretemps. It was a very satisfying experience to see them I think benefit from their experiences with me, giving them new and additional options and perspectives to think about, and other ways of spending their time, and making things happen in a good way for themselves.

Having and raising kids in the right way, might be the single most important contribution most of us can "give" to our respective communities, and to the nation. And if one accomplishes that, I really can't imagine anything that would be more satisfying in life. But it takes a lot of time, and A LOT of patience, not to mention the money involved. It's sort of the ultimate commitment one can make in life, and the most important really.

I am quite conflicted, to say the least.  There's a part of me that wants one, and an equally as large part of me that would consider children both an enormous burden and an enormously selfish decision.

I think, ultimately, if a) I manage to turn things around and become more financially secure in the next decade than I expect, and b) the world starts turning itself around as well, then I'd probably like to have one child.  (More than one is pretty much out of the question, for many reasons.)  But right now I'd say there's probably about a two-thirds chance that doesn't happen.

Yes. I can't imagine any possible scenario in which I do not have children.

I had a stepdaughter when I was married before.  I was lucky, because she was somewhat grown by then, so the work wasn't as hard.  But she was a really, really wonderful kid--I'll always think of her as "my little girl," and the experience was extremely rewarding, and I was able to help her, which makes me happy.

I don't think I would want to have kids anymore.  I'm in my early 40's, and don't really have the energy or the patience anymore.  If you definitely don't want them, then don't have them.  But if you're young and you're on the fence, I think you should have kids; there is nothing else like it...and, for the rest, what Torie said.

the act of bringing another self-conscious life into the world is the ultimate exercise in narcissism.  while I have a natural 'desire' to do it here and there, I couldn't bring myself to.  unless of course it is unplanned or by mistake, as it often is.
