Another candidate may be State Senator Pete Brunstetter. He's a Berger ally and the two apparently had an understanding not to run against each other. Brunstetter represents the Republican parts of Forsyth County as well as Yadkin County.

What's his profile like? Would he be a better candidate than Tillis?

His wife was the one who suggested that part of the reason Republican drafted Amendment 1 was to "protect the Caucasian race."

I think that tells you all you need to know.

Cruz's filibuster has been a big fundraising/enthusiasm boost for Maness; he's launched a money bomb effort.

He's also been lampooning Cassidy:

If this is how he'll run his campaign, I'm pretty excited to be on Team Mary Smiley

Well, I guess the hype about Brunstetter was ephemeral:

Thats probably what I'd do too, if I were a backbencher with a safe Assembly seat.

Whoah, hold the phone! Though Brenstetter is taking a pass, Hagan still gets some horrible news today:

Is he strong as a challenger? Does the democratic base like Hagan?

The NRSC is going to attack Hagan on two new things: the welfare drug testing and the war on coal.

Seriously? They're gonna have to do better than that. Even McCrory agrees with her on the drug testing issue. I'm pretty pro-coal myself, but I'm not sure how they'll justify the war on coal attack line on her; maybe they were confusing NC with WV or KY? Obviously, coal mining is a huge economic driver in NC:

Cassidy as an op-ed echoing Vitter's sentiment that Congresscritters and their staffers shouldn't be exempt from Obamacare.

Politico has a piece on how none of the four red state Democratic Senators have defected during this shutdown mess.

I always thought coal was huge in western NC/eastern TN.  You learn something new every day, I guess.

With the shutdown, Republicans just gave these Democrats ammo.

There's absolutely none in WNC- which is why it didn't have huge swings to Romney.

I must have missed this poll from High Point University out a few weeks ago. They didn't do head-to-heads, but they had approval ratings. I think the undecideds are a bit high, but Hagan is the most popular politician of those they asked about:

Obama- 39/52
McCrory- 39/42
Hagan- 40/28
Burr- 36/25

The had four Presidential polls last year showing the candidates within a few points of eachother and ultimately showed Romney +1, so they're not a bad pollster.

Our friend krazen is gloating about another HPU poll out today. They show that Hagan's approval has slipped to 32/34 and her reelects stand at 19/40. So two weeks ago, she was the most popular pol in the state and now this? She hasn't really down anything particularity bad in the last two weeks, so I'm a bit puzzled.

Obama's approval are up slightly to 42/52 and McCrory has dropped to 38/46. This makes it even harder to reconcile Hagan's drop.

I've been looking for news about the open LA-06, but thats been a bit slow. Paul Dietzel's namesake, his grandfather the legendary LSU coach, passed away last week. I guess that would give him more good will in the area. Dietzel also did a fundraiser with Rick Santorum and says he'll have him back for some other events.

Actually, our mountain people are pro-environment.  Heath Shuler voted for cap and trade.
