The fact that David Perdue lost to John Ossoff is f***ing insane.  He literally just whipped his a$$ two months ago.  Voter suppression caused by Trump... SAD!

I wouldn't call a two point plurality "whipping his ass."

He flipped two previously deep red states (AZ and GA) blue and both will have two Democratic senators, giving us a trifecta.

If there was any doubt Trump was a failed president for his party before, it's gone now. Don't be surprised if they start to lose faith and look elsewhere.

Very fitting that a combo of Trump's sore loser tantrum and McConnell's heartlessness in regards to a $2k stimulus are what will cost the Republicans the Senate.

The worst of both sides of the GOP doomed them, yes that is fitting.

Georgia is blue for the foreseeable future unless Dem's nominate a toxic candidate.  If Ossoff can beat Perdue there is really no excuse for Dems not to win in the state from now on.

It really is the new Virginia!

Eat your heart out, North Carolina!

Biden was supposed to win in a 2008 style landslide. A 4.5 point win was a semi disappointment for Biden. The CNN exit polls had Trump at 50% approval in 2020, which is terrifying.

How can people still cite CNN exit polls as if they are in any way not garbage after tonight?

Can someone please explain to me why people keep mentioning Manchin?

As the most moderate Democrat in a Senate controlled by Dems by just 1 vote, he'll have huge influence over what bills can be passed.

You'll live.

LOL exactly. Pretty funny to see conservatives whine about their states flipping. Get over it, snowflakes. Some of us have been living in states that haven't voted the way we wanted for years.

Ugh hopefully Manchin uses his power to stop the left wing agenda and force a more centrist agenda to pass

Biden's agenda is already fairly centrist. It's like some Republicans forget who won the primaries.

Yah centrist compared to how far left the Democratic Party has become but it’s still much to the left of the Democratic Party circa 2015

2015? I really don't get the sense the party has moved all that left since then. Bernie lost twice, "The Squad" doesn't have any power within the party. The leftists may be loud but they are hardly pulling the strings of the party.

How long until Ossoff runs for President?

16 years, but a plagiarism scandal might force him to drop out. 20 years later, he'll run again & end up getting the VP slot. 12 years after that, he'll be elected President.

You know I was actually just thinking this is kinda similar to Joe's first win. Really close win against an incumbent by a really young guy who will probably stick around for a while.

I want to rec this but using right wing terms like "squad" means I can't in good faith.

LOL what? They refer to themselves as the Squad!

Yeah OSR doesn't have to worry. The policies of supporting the genocide in Yemen and letting people die because they can't afford insulin are safe with you.

Aw come on, can we not just have one night without the in-fighting that I'm sure will get real intense soon enough?

Ok but horseshoe theory renders that point moot. Don't let Republicans define Democrats, even if some Democrats are stupid.

But they even coined the term? I'm confused as to why you think the right came up with it.

On the night we win the Senate you really want to talk about how a Democrat Senate is just as bad as a Republican Senate.

Absolutely not. Alben Barkley was saying s***t that deserved a response.

He might just be an asshole and make me feel bad I ever defended him.
Alben Barkley is right about the true significance of the squad and the Left of the party. Sorry to say it, but it's true. If anything, I admire his brutal honesty.

But it's not brutal honesty. It was a photo that right wing media played up. No different then if Ossoff and Warnock get called "the brothers" since they referenced that and it gets manipulated in a racist way because of one comment made off hand.

Wait WTF? How did I become the asshole here? What photo? What are you talking about? You just said the "Squad" was some right-wing term when as far as I can tell, the term directly originates from AOC labeling a photo she took of the four of them "Squad" HERSELF on Instagram! How does that make me the bad guy? What did I say that was wrong? Is there some misunderstanding here?

Now you can disagree with my analysis of the party's left wing all you want, that's fine. But I wasn't even in this context trying to say it in a disparaging manner, "brutally honest" or otherwise, wasn't even talking to left-wingers here at all. I was just trying to say to OSR that Bernie and the Squad's influence in the party is overblown in media, including right-wing media as you even seemed to allude to. As of now at least, their wing is very much the minority of the party. Not saying it's impossible that will ever change, not even trying to start a debate as to whether it's good or bad, but as of now I just disagree with OSR's assertion that the Democratic Party as a whole is way to the left of where it was in 2015. That's all I'm saying.

Question for the '2022 is an inevitable red wave' people; Will people really be eager to punish Dems if the economy is booming, they got the vaccine and life is back to normal? Who will seriously want to return to the sh*tshow of 2020? Republicans will need something fresh and exciting, maybe taking parts of Trump's appeal but not just going all in on Trump. Maybe classic midterm dynamics enable them to win a sufficiently gerrymandered House and Senate seats that are to the right of the nation, but if Democrats get the country back on track they aren't inevitably going to be swept out.

Also I honestly think Democratic voter habits may have been permanently changed by the events of the past four years. Seems people FINALLY understand you can’t just show up once every four years and call it a day. This is the first real evidence of that, but if it continues it’s very good for us. Also if the trends we see here (suburban gains holding for Dems, rural turnout dropping without Trump on the ballot, Latino vote swinging back to Dems) continue, that is very VERY good for us. All of a sudden the Senate and the Electoral College may not even be so R-leaning by default anymore. Especially if the big one (Texas) finally falls... Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, but I really am feeling a hell of a lot better about the state of the party and the country than I did in November. Trump’s overperformance may well have been an anomaly, and it still wasn’t enough, and it still dragged Rs down in states like AZ and GA.

Are the results in Georgia a sign that Trumpism without Trump isn't going anywhere? That it's more about him and any real movement at all.

In 2018 the Democrats picked up a lot of seats, like in Iowa, that voted for Trump twice. In 2020 he was on the ticket and the Republicans win. But now, he is not on the ballot and again they lose.

Should that give Democrats hope that states like Iowa, Ohio and Florida are not really gone but that something special about Trump appealed to the voters in these states?

Iowa and Oho are gonna be tough to win back regardless but maybe Trump did better there than most Rs would. Florida is a very... special state that does its own thing and I’ve given up trying to predict it. But there is some reason to think Trump may have been particularly well-suited for it in a way future Rs won’t be, and if the state Dems can get their s—t together, it may not be gone for good.

Yes.  But I don't necessarily think Iowa and Ohio are winnable going forward.  Florida is.  Georgia clearly is.  North Carolina and Texas are definitely in play.  I think we need to also remember that Biden won Georgia.  There is also an element of Georgia fundamentally transitioning to a blue state regardless of Trump.  It is likely the next Virginia.  Georgia is Virginia in 2008.

True but looks like these senate candidates are gonna do better than Biden did against Trump, largely because of lower R turnout without Trump while D turnout was still robust and the suburbs didn’t budge at all back towards Rs without Trump. So seems like the low propensity rural WWC voters only show up in droves for Trump, while the high propensity suburbanites show up and vote for Dems now regardless of Trump being on the ballot (also seen in 2018). If anything like that holds across the nation, very good for us.

Trump not signing this bill or at least forcing a $2000 vote on the floor of the senate would’ve given Dems the only prayer they had. But alas it’s over

Oh my god, we’re DEFINITELY winning these seats now!

Just bumping this to remind MillennialModerate to always doom over every election ever in Georgia from now on. Will guarantee Democratic dominance for all-time.
