k.....what phrase or title should someone describe themselves if they are for gay marriage (before most Dems), for legal weed (before most Dems), thinks prostitution and gambling should be legal but also think free trade is good, believes that private charity works better than govt handouts, and generally thinks lower taxes are better than higher taxes?

There are two parties here.  They label themselves (and each other) all the time.  If you don't fit the mold, and are not apolitical, it can be handy to have a label for yourself.

I rarely label myself, plenty of other people around to do it for me, but plenty of people do label themselves.  I'd be willing to bet even you've "advertised your beliefs" before.  I'm not sure why you're singling out one group to complain about self labeling.
