Keeping our streets safe at such a young age should get him to be our secretary of defense eventually. Had someone killed someone of the same race, half the neighborhood wouldn't know about it, but because there is a racial difference, the media has to play politics.

I say not guilty.  There is a thing called a burden of proof.  I haven't followed this case closely, but how could the prosecution meet that burden?  My perception of a reasonable doubt standard is that it means you're about 95% sure or more that the elements of the offense have been met.  To me, the defense's theory seems at least equally plausible as the prosecution's theory of what happened. 50% <  95%, so...

The coverage of this trial is a travesty in any case.  There is some actual series of events that happened.  Nobody except Zimmerman really has any real knowledge.  We as a public don't know what happened yet, both sides of the political spectrum want to use this case as a parable.

We have all these narrative we want to use:  The justice system is racist!  Black teens are violent and scary!  When a black kid dies nobody usually cares, so... send Zimmerman to prison!  Zimmerman is white, racist jerk!  Guns are bad!  Guns are good!  None of them fit neatly onto reality. Reality is inconvenient that way.  The truth is that some black kids are violent psychopaths who attack strangers.  And some hispanic guys are trigger happy racists.  And others are saints, and almost all are in between.

well said when race is involved everyone plays the race card and it becomes political

If Martin had killed Zimmerman, does anyone think he would have gotten off free?

It depends on the circumstances. In this case, no.

DOJ is currently reviewing the case. Zimmerman may be charged by the Federal Government on criminal civil rights violations.

It's time to let this go.  Nothing good is going to come out of this.

People who are probably guilty are acquitted every day because of a lack of proof.  Let's not single this case out.

That attitude is morally corrupt.

The DOJ almost never does things like this.  They're picking out a single case because of the media hype.

It would be one thing if the jury had indisputably handed down the wrong verdict, but there's enough reasonable doubt in this case.

This is the kind of thing that may permanently damage Obama's presidency if the DOJ pursues this.

It's Obama's fault Zimmerman even went to trial. I guess we're living in times where the president has enough influence he can just put someone on trial because he thinks if he had a son, he could look like Martin. By the way, I'm using Obama's words.

Perhaps it would be more prudent for people to push to change Florida's stand your ground law than to push for the DOJ to step in and jail Zimmerman for doing nothing unlawful, thereby simply making him a martyr for racial division and to feed the angry lions that are marching the streets.

Just a though...

And if Treyvon Martin were white, no one would care and African Americans wouldn't riot over it.

That's not true. The story would still be a big one because of Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law and the gun control debate. There would be less of a racial angle - unless conservatives decided Zimmerman was a Hispanic thug - but it would certainly be a story.

No one on the left would care and African Americans wouldn't be outraged.

So I should ask every single person I see in my neighborhood that I don't recognize why they're there? Then I'd be quite busy every time I go outside.

Mine isn't and we are close knit.  What are the demographics of my neighborhood, BRTD?

Irrelevant. The point is that I see people I don't recognize here EVERY SINGLE TIME I go outside unless it's like 3AM or something (and sometimes even then.)

Not all neighborhoods are like this. Some neighborhoods don't like strangers and defend each other against possible attacks. My parents' gated neighborhood is like this. Not everyone lives in an area where roamers run rampant and strangers are free to enter. If you ask me, I think the gated community sounds safer anyway.
