Honestly, I was originally pulling for Chuy but after he endorsed Rossana Rodriguez's very questionable opponent I'm hoping Brandon Johnson can pull something off, no matter how unlikely it seems from what I know of the race's current dynamics. Just don't let it be Vallas or Lightfoot.

I'm glad Johnson made it, ecstatic even! I'll definitely be contributing to his campaign soon. Also, Rossana Rodriguez Sanchez is safe against that DINO that Chuy endorsed. All around a good night, now let's just keep the other DINO out of the mayors office.

Vallas also originated and supported a proposal to reallocate money earmarked for teacher pensions into a general operating budget, which, alongside a decrease in returns from the stock market and an increasing number of retirees caused CPS to be unable to make their full payments on time in later years. As CEO, he presided over the nation's largest experiment in privatized management of schools, with the management of over 40 schools turned over to outside for-profits, nonprofits, and universities beginning in Fall 2002.

Yeaaah, in addition to his multiple gaffes (Freudian slips?) during the race itself and all of this and I'm absolutely convinced that anyone backing Vallas would've been fine with electing another Bloomberg type mayor in Chicago as the man is clearly in Democratic politics simply cause it's Chicago. I hope the city doesn't fall for it.

Woke (/ˈwoʊk/ WOHK) is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination".

Now plenty of people, particularly right-wing people, have started to use 'Woke' for any number of cultural issues they want to malign, or when someone does something silly like this, but I refuse to play by that definition and/or acknowledge it as having any real substance. But you do you BRTD, what Lightfoot did here was clearly ridiculous but I reject labeling it as 'woke'.

I think with "Latinx" as with "wokeism" it's important to remember that a healthy majority of Americans do not know what these terms mean

If this pollster is accurate, then it's clear where the momentum is. I'd like to see more statistical points of reference... But with the election in just a few weeks we probably won't get a ton more.

Just curious, does anyone have an idea how Vallas went from an abysmal 9th Place 5% finish 4 years ago to finishing top of the field with a solid third of the vote this time around?

The most likely explanation is simply that last time he was a dime-a-dozen White candidate for the people who take that into consideration /w their vote and this time he's the only one. Fitting, in a way, since Vallas has absolutely nothing else to offer Chicago besides that and privatizing their schools.

I'm sure someone else has a wonkier reason, and I wouldn't mind hearing it, but considering a Daley was literally on the ballot in 2019...

Bernie is going to be having a rally /w Brandon Johnson this Thursday; and honestly out of most major national figures I think he has enough grassroots support to actually make a difference, especially with millennials who backed him in 16 and 20 and among left-leaning white people.

Short-sighted and silly; I've worked in the mental health field for years and I've seen how severely underfunded and supported it is. Clearly when there is active violent intent law enforcement may be necessary but much of the time they aren't and then escalate the situation as we've seen over and over. You don't police your way out of homelessness or mental health issues, sorry.

Fascinated by the takes that Chicago is doomed because they voted for a new mayor. Even if his policies were destined to be destructive, how often do big city mayors (or any executives, really) actually get their entire platform enacted? If I didn't know better, I'd think that people can only imagine cities in perpetual states of collapse.

No pay increase by Johnson will make up for every decent child leaving the city, leaving behind the worst.

Also, just as a data-point I'd like to put out there, Chicago by almost every source I can find actually has one of the highest rates of officers per capita in the country. Almost twice that of Los Angeles and somewhat higher than New York which puts Vallas' (and his supporters) platform of 'throw police at it' even more senseless.

Very, very satisfied that Johnson won and hope that he's actually able to enact most of his policies and proposals surrounding housing, social work and community mental health expansion which he was extremely consistent on throughout the campaign.
