Thread idea; NJ-Sen 2024 (It’s all on the (county) line)

Or "Draggin' the Line".

This has been the most hilariously stupid primary ever, even more than PA's Dem Senate primary in '22. Tammy Murphy has run an abysmal campaign.

I have not been following the primary too closely, but is there a significant chance that Fulop and others rescind their endorsements of Murphy?

Yup

Yeah, Tammy is cooked at this point. She's run just an abysmal campaign at this point that I don't think there's any saving it.

I hope so. At least from the distance followed, it seemed to me like she just thought to be entitled to the job of senator rather than earning it and then started to go negative as Kim challenged her politically.

This primary may be the beginning of an entirely new political era for New Jersey.

An end to the machine line would be the most dramatic change to New Jersey politics in a long time. Only thing that comes even slightly close would be the 1947 Constitution which drastically changed the role of the New Jersey Governor (making it one of the most powerful state executives).

County-level and local politics in the next 3-4 years will be particularly fascinating to see.

To be fair "Unpopular Governor tries to appoint his Wife as Senator" was going to end badly.

It will make both parties weaker in their respective strongholds. People tend to focus on the Democratic Side, but the New Jersey GOP has Republican machines, particularly in places like Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

There's plenty of candidates for higher office that didn't run because they didn't have the line. I think if the line is killed, you will see a lot of primary challengers for State House seats in 2025, mayorships/local offices in 2025/26, and certainly for State Senate seats in 2027.

Do you think he'll do this if there's a hung jury?

I mean, yeah, that's presumably what he's been hoping to get again, because I can't imagine that he actually thinks he can get a jury to unanimously acquit him in the SDNY on this, & he has shown before that he can & will try staying in the Senate after securing just a hung jury as his "exoneration".
