Question; what happens if a member of congress is extradited and imprisoned in a foreign country? Is there any way to vacate his seat?

A member can be expelled by a 2/3 majority of the House.

The resume that Santos presented to the Nassau GOP in 2020: https://int.nyt.com/data/documenttools/resume-of-george-santos/95321af46e1dc223/full.pdf

Perhaps it's par for the course with him that he claimed to have graduated summa cum laude from Baruch.

The fact that he's lost basically the entire conference, the NY GOP, and other NY House members, I mean at this point.. how do you just not resign. I'm honestly surprised at how quickly even many GOPers coalesced against him.

You don't resign when you have even less shame than the average Republican somehow.

I like how he wanted it to get to a second page (because of course he did), so he set the line spacing to 1.5 and loaded it with increasingly hilarious "skills." This is quintessential George Santos.

Question; what happens if a member of congress is extradited and imprisoned in a foreign country? Is there any way to vacate his seat?

He can be expelled by 2/3 of the House, usually after the recommendation after the House Ethics Committee. Also, House rules allow a 2/3 vote of the House to declare a seat vacant; this was done exactly once, in 1981, after a member fell into a persistent vegetative state, but it could be done in other circumstances where a member can't serve or resign, but the House wants to avoid suggesting that they were behaving in an ethically improper way.

In general, the answer to these questions is "Santos can be expelled", but this usually only happens either after a conviction or after the recommendation of the House Ethics Committee, and HEC doesn't normally recommend expulsion without a conviction already existing -- the Senate has in the past been a little more forward.

I don’t know why everyone thinks that a guy who lied about every single aspect of his life can be shamed into resigning.

That he resign is the bare minimum. Katie Hill was run out of town for far less. That said, I'm still positively surprised the Nassau GOP and some individual members are calling him out now. McCarthy isn't in a position to do so because he needed Santos' vote and still does. Really shows how weak of a speaker the dude is.

Santos' finance director impersonating McCarthy's chief on a call with a donor really shouldn't be overlooked here - that is a major transgression and serious trust violation that could hurt call time fundraising relationships with this donor and others for many Republicans beyond just Santos in the near future (especially non-incumbent challengers). No doubt McCarthy has gotten an earful about this and will need to reprimand Santos for it somehow.

I understand McCarthy has a paper thin majority and needs Santos' vote, but what will be worse for him? Kicking him out and maybe losing one seat or dealing with Santos for 2 years? I feel like the calculation is clear here, and even the NY GOP have realized that.

I have a feeling Santos and Despacito are going to have a very rocky relationship for the next 2 years despite representing neighboring districts, and are both 1 termers

This, from a Republican former Congressman, sums it up:

145 would be 1/3 of the current congress (so, he'd have less than a 2/3rds mandate to stay). 148 would be 2/3rds of the GOP caucus (i.e., "I want a supermajority of my own party to want me out before I'll resign). But both are higher than 142, and he doesn't specify 142 Republicans so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

He didn’t say congressmembers, just people

FWIW this is the number of votes he got in 2022.

This makes Gabriano the only Long Island congressman sticking with Santos, for now
He won't be forced to resign and he will play the good boy to avoid trouble.

And the GOP needs his vote in the House given the tiny majority, they can't risk a special election or even a period of vacancy.

He will probably stay for the full 2 years, but not run again.

I can see him being mentally ill enough to run again.

It seems kinda simple. Santos is getting abandoned by the local party now cause they have probably done two the research and have come to the conclusion on two things that Santos is no doubt in denial about.

One: he is probably losing in any scenario. If he stays around then he loses the primary or the general given the seats alignment. His personal situation gets worse if he keeps fighting the public scrutiny and state legal investigation before resigning. The longer it goes on, the more he'll just taint a successor candidate and make it harder for the GOP locally.  So they would prefer to bite the bullet with a quick special when Santos is just known as a horrible liar.

Two: it will get worse. People both here and elsewhere have already stated that there is nothing intrinsically wrong with all the fabrications, it just makes you a scumbag.  The issue is that buried and concealed within the lies is the question of his campaign and personal financing. What the local players have deduced is that the money is probably tainted in some fashion,  and more attention and investigation will drag that to light.

I wouldn't put it past him to steal the schtick from another famous George: George Costanza.

Santos will likely be the last person to realize that Santos is done.

What does "done" mean here? I think George Santos is already aware he's a one and done Congressman and won't even bother running again in 2024, but if he doesn't want to resign the GOP can't easily push him out. McCarthy's certainly not gonna hold an expulsion vote basically no matter how bad the story gets. He can't shrink his majority safely.
